Kylee Johnson hits 3-run HR to lead 11-seed Clemson to a 10-2 win over USC Upstate in 5 innings in NCAA softball tournament opener

CLEMSON, S.C. (Clemson SID) – The 11th-seeded Clemson Softball team broke open a 2-2 ball game with three runs in the fourth inning and five in the fifth inning to secure a 10-2 run-rule victory over USC Upstate in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament at McWhorter Stadium. ACC Champion Clemson, ranked 13th nationally, improved to 45-12 on the season, while Upstate fell to 39-15. Kylee Johnson hit a three-run fourth-inning home run to give Clemson a 5-2 lead, a game after hitting the go-ahead home run in the ACC Championship game the previous Sunday. In the fifth inning, four consecutive Tigers earned RBI hits, including freshman Taylor Pipkins, who knocked in the final of three consecutive doubles to walk it off for the Tigers. Freshman Marian Collins went 3-for-3 with three runs batted in as Clemson totaled ten hits. Despite the Tigers getting on the board first off an RBI single by Collins in the second, USC Upstate responded with two runs in the top of the third to take the lead. With two outs in the third, Alex Brown drew her second walk of the day to put a runner on for Maddie Moore to drive her 11th and team's 95th double off the left center fence to even things at 2-2. This was Moore's 65th RBI of the year and Brown's 64th run – both of which are single-season program records. Following the day, Clemson has 98 doubles on the season. Clemson claimed the lead in the bottom of the fourth on Johnson's home run that came after an Aby Vieira walk, a Collins single, and a Pipkins fielder's choice. In the fifth inning, Clemson's bats again came alive with Moore and Kennedy Ariail on-base, Macey Cintron singled to center to bring in Moore. Vieira followed with her 17th double of the year, scoring Ariail. Ava Wilson came on to run for Cintron and was promptly sent home along with Vieira on Collins's double. Pipkins ended it with a double to score Collins. Senior Reese Basinger made her first NCAA Regional start in the circle. She pitched 2.1 innings before senior Brooke McCubbin entered in relief, going the final 2.2 innings to improve to 17-5 on the year. Up Next The Tigers return to McWhorter Stadium on Saturday, May 17 where they will take on Northwestern. First pitch is slated for 1:30 p.m. The winner of that contest will play Sunday at 1 p.m., while the loser will play at 6:30 p.m. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. What Kim Mulkey said ahead of LSU women's basketball's Sweet Sixteen game vs NC State

What Kim Mulkey said ahead of LSU women's basketball's Sweet Sixteen game vs NC State LSU women's basketball takes the court against NC State on Friday in the NCAA Tournament's Sweet 16. In a rematch of a regular season game won by the Tigers, both teams will be fighting to keep their seasons alive. LSU. the No. 3 seed, will need to knock off the ACC Champions and second-seeded Wolfpack to face Ole Miss or UCLA in the Elite Eight. Though the matchup was in November, head coach Kim Mulkey is convinced both teams haven't changed their style of play all that much. If anything, both teams are better following tough conference slates. LSU finished third in the SEC and exited in the semifinals of the conference tournament but it reloaded thanks to the returns of Flau'Jae Johnson and Aneesah Morrow from injuries. The pair got help from teammates in the first two games of March Madness. The Tigers scored over 100 points in each contest and allowed their defense to fuel their offense. Here's what Mulkey said ahead of the Sweet Sixteen game against NC State. Mulkey's scout on NC State While she got familiar with the Wolfpack's personnel in November, Mulkey isn't relying on that game to prepare LSU for the Sweet Sixteen. Instead, she'll look at NC State's path to the ACC Championship, including its clutch play in close games. "I think both teams are obviously better and we just have a ton of respect." "We've looked at some film but they're better. We're better. They're ACC champs. We finished third in the SEC. They're supposed to win." "They've won games on the road that were tough games. They were in tight games. They made the plays to win those games." Wolfpack improved post play compliments guard-heavy lineups NC State head coach Wes Moore relies on guard play, particularly leading scorer Aziaha James, to shoot his team to victory. Even with post players like Madison Hayes finding more success in the postseason, Mulkey is still focused on limiting the Wolfpack's backcourt. "I'm sure their posts have developed and are better but they have four outstanding guards and they're not going to change their philosophy and all of a sudden become a post-dominant team. We know what their strengths are. We know what their improvements are" "Those guards just have unbelievable range. Those guards can dribble, penetrate. They have to rebound as guards because they usually play their four guards together." LSU rides team-centered wins into Sweet Sixteen Every available Tigers saw the floor in the first and second round NCAA Tournament games. From point guards to wings and forwards, the entire roster has found scoring success thus far. Mulkey aims to keep her team confident and motivated to contribute when called upon against NC State with the season on the line. "They're all playing very good basketball. They're excited. Everybody's looking to score. They're looking to share the ball. I just think having everybody back and everybody healthy. It's fun to watch them right now." "You have to keep coaching. You have to keep demanding. I think our practices do that. You have to understand there are going to be down moments throughout a season and yet you don't get too high or too low and you just keep coaching them."

College football analyst expects a 'big year' for Clemson in 2025

Former ESPN college football analyst David Pollack has been open about his expectations for Dabo Swinney and the Clemson Tigers heading into the 2025 season. The 2024 ACC Champions took down SMU to earn the title and an automatic bid to the 2024 College Football Playoff, where the Tigers fell 38-24 to Texas in the first round. It was a solid run to the playoff for a Clemson team that had mixed expectations heading into the season. While the loss wasn't the result the Tigers were looking for, but a return to the CFP was something that fans were desperate for. Recently, Pollack discussed which coaches have the most to gain in the 2025 season during an episode of the David Pollack College Football show. One of the names who arose was Swinney, as Pollack has high expectations for the Tigers next season. Dabo Swinney adds another massive veteran addition to Clemson's staff — Clemson Wire (@Clemson_Wire) February 11, 2025 Dabo, obviously there for a different reason. But I think Dabo's lost the luster, and people now question whether he is that guy. Dabo has two championships. Kirby has two. That's the list of active coaches that have two. Like, they are in a league of their own. Not wanting to adapt to the portal, but adapted to the portal a little bit. Not having a QB, finally got his QB. Not having receivers for a little while, finally got the receivers. I think that this year is going to be a big year for Clemson. For years, Swinney has been one of, if not the top head coach in college football. Entering year 18, Swinney has the most doubters he's had since he became the Tigers' head coach. He has another opportunity to prove himself in 2025 with a roster that is built to compete for a championship. Pollack's expectations are valid; Clemson should be a force in 2025.
