What Kim Mulkey said ahead of LSU women's basketball's Sweet Sixteen game vs NC State
LSU women's basketball takes the court against NC State on Friday in the NCAA Tournament's Sweet 16.
In a rematch of a regular season game won by the Tigers, both teams will be fighting to keep their seasons alive. LSU. the No. 3 seed, will need to knock off the ACC Champions and second-seeded Wolfpack to face Ole Miss or UCLA in the Elite Eight.
Though the matchup was in November, head coach Kim Mulkey is convinced both teams haven't changed their style of play all that much. If anything, both teams are better following tough conference slates.
LSU finished third in the SEC and exited in the semifinals of the conference tournament but it reloaded thanks to the returns of Flau'Jae Johnson and Aneesah Morrow from injuries.
The pair got help from teammates in the first two games of March Madness. The Tigers scored over 100 points in each contest and allowed their defense to fuel their offense.
Here's what Mulkey said ahead of the Sweet Sixteen game against NC State.
Mulkey's scout on NC State
While she got familiar with the Wolfpack's personnel in November, Mulkey isn't relying on that game to prepare LSU for the Sweet Sixteen. Instead, she'll look at NC State's path to the ACC Championship, including its clutch play in close games.
"I think both teams are obviously better and we just have a ton of respect."
"We've looked at some film but they're better. We're better. They're ACC champs. We finished third in the SEC. They're supposed to win."
"They've won games on the road that were tough games. They were in tight games. They made the plays to win those games."
Wolfpack improved post play compliments guard-heavy lineups
NC State head coach Wes Moore relies on guard play, particularly leading scorer Aziaha James, to shoot his team to victory. Even with post players like Madison Hayes finding more success in the postseason, Mulkey is still focused on limiting the Wolfpack's backcourt.
"I'm sure their posts have developed and are better but they have four outstanding guards and they're not going to change their philosophy and all of a sudden become a post-dominant team. We know what their strengths are. We know what their improvements are"
"Those guards just have unbelievable range. Those guards can dribble, penetrate. They have to rebound as guards because they usually play their four guards together."
LSU rides team-centered wins into Sweet Sixteen
Every available Tigers saw the floor in the first and second round NCAA Tournament games. From point guards to wings and forwards, the entire roster has found scoring success thus far. Mulkey aims to keep her team confident and motivated to contribute when called upon against NC State with the season on the line.
"They're all playing very good basketball. They're excited. Everybody's looking to score. They're looking to share the ball. I just think having everybody back and everybody healthy. It's fun to watch them right now."
"You have to keep coaching. You have to keep demanding. I think our practices do that. You have to understand there are going to be down moments throughout a season and yet you don't get too high or too low and you just keep coaching them."

Nets projected to take F Drake Powell 27th overall in 2025 NBA Draft
Nets projected to take F Drake Powell 27th overall in 2025 NBA Draft The Brooklyn Nets have five picks to use in the upcoming 2025 NBA Draft, including four in the first round of what could be a class full of talent. Brooklyn may be trying to pull off a deal or two to lessen the load on player development, but until then, there are players that they can take at each spot, including a player from North Carolina with some upside. "Teams figure to put extra stock into Drake Powell's NBA combine performance and workouts after he spent the year spotting up on 49.2 percent of North Carolina's possessions and taking just 5.7 shots per game," Jonathan Wasserman wrote in his most recent mock draft for Bleacher Report. Wasserman has the Nets taking Powell with the 27th overall pick in the Draft, the pick they received from the Houston Rockets. "Despite the lack of production, there could still be first-round interest based on his outstanding physical profile, defensive projection and 37.9 percent three-point shooting," Wasserman continued. Following the conclusion of the 2024-25 college basketball season, Powell was projected to be a second-round pick after what he showed at North Carolina which wasn't much when just looking at his stats. Powell, 19, averaged 7.4 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 1.1 assists per game while shooting 48.3% from the field and 37.9% from three-point land in 37 appearances. Powell was an integral part of a Tarheels team that finished with a 23-14 record, allowing them to make the NCAA Tournament where they made it past the First Four before losing in the first round to Ole Miss. While Powell did not put forth much in terms of statistics to show that he would be a prospect with high upside, his performance at the NBA Draft Combine showed scouts differently, as Wasserman alluded to. Powell, who Wasserman compares to New Orleans Pelicans forward Herb Jones, displayed his athletic ability that gave many the impression that he could be an elite defender and shooter on the wing in the right situation.

Updated bracket, schedule for NCAA baseball tournament The CWS has been played annually at Charles Schwab Field Omaha. Action will commence for the 2025 CWS on June 13 with a pair of first-round games. Two more games will be played on June 14, with the action really picking up for the double-elimination format following the first two games. Tennessee won the 2024 national championship but was ousted by No. 3 Arkansas in the Fayetteville Super Regional. The Razorbacks, who have never won a baseball title, are the highest remaining seed in the tournament, and the only team in the top five left. Along with Arkansas, No. 6 LSU is still alive, which gives the SEC a quarter of the field despite entering the tournament with 13 teams. The past five champions have all emerged from the SEC, including LSU in 2023. Oregon State was the last non-SEC team to win in 2018 and is among the final eight standing. Here's what you need to know about the format of the College World Series: How many teams make College World Series? The College World Series field is made up of the final eight remaining teams in the 64-team NCAA baseball tournament bracket. The eight teams that compete in the CWS have advanced to Omaha after winning their respective regional and super regional series. How does College World Series work? Explaining CWS format Similar to the Women's College World Series, the CWS format is a double-elimination tournament comprised of two four-team brackets. In the CWS, each team restarts at a 0-0 record and is guaranteed at least two tournament games. Similar to the regional tournament format, the winner continues in the winner's bracket, while the loser fends off elimination until a winner emerges from the bracket. If a team starts 0-2, they are eliminated. However, if a team wins its first two games, it is in the semifinals and needs just one more win to clinch a spot in the best-of-three-game championship series. The minimum amount of games that can be played by a team in the entire CWS is five games – including the championship series – but the maximum is eight games, which makes a world of difference with the pitching available for each team. Unlike the WCWS format, the CWS does not have a team swap brackets if they emerge out of the loser's bracket. That means the CWS keeps two separate brackets, not a single, larger bracket. How does College World Series championship work? The College World Series championship series is a best-of-three series, which means that to emerge as the national champion, a team needs to win two games. If a team loses Game 1, it would mean they need to win Game 2 to force the "if necessary" Game 3. College World Series bracket 2025 Bracket 1 for the 2025 College World Series consists of No. 8 Oregon State, No. 13 Coastal Carolina, Louisville and Arizona. Bracket 2 for the CWS consists of No. 3 Arkansas, No. 6 LSU and UCLA. The winner of the Murray State and Duke game played on June 9 will determine the eighth and final team. Half of the field will be unseeded, regardless.
