Another tri-series on cards involving Pakistan

Pakistan's players celebrate as Bangladesh's Tanzid Hasan (R) walks back to the pavilion after his dismissal during the first Twenty20 international cricket match between Bangladesh and Pakistan at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Dhaka on July 20. Photo: AFP Listen to article It looks like Pakistan are set to be involved in another tri-series next year with Australia and potentially Bangladesh, scheduled for February 2026. The series is likely to be played ahead of the T20 World Cup, a source within the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) confirmed. Cricket Australia has a longstanding tradition of touring the subcontinent ahead of major ICC events to acclimatise properly. In 2021, Australia toured Bangladesh for a five-match T20I series and, similarly, played a Test and ODI series in Sri Lanka to prepare for the ICC Champions Trophy earlier this year. With India and Sri Lanka scheduled to host the mega event in February–March, Australia are set to play three T20Is against Pakistan. However, discussions are underway to convert the bilateral series into a tri-nation competition. Read More: Bangladesh take second T20I for first series win over Pakistan A BCB official confirmed that, at this stage, no formal proposal has been tabled by the Pakistan Cricket Board, but informal conversations have taken place on the sidelines of the ongoing Asian Cricket Council (ACC) meeting in Dhaka. According to local media, the PCB is eager to include Bangladesh in the series following improved bilateral relations between the two boards. It is expected that PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi will formally discuss the tri-nation proposal with BCB counterpart Aminul Islam Bulbul on the sidelines of the ACC meeting. Naqvi, who is also the ACC President, is currently in Dhaka for the ACC Annual General Meeting scheduled for July 24–25. If finalised, the series would feature seven matches, with each team playing the other two sides twice, followed by a final between the top two. Meanwhile, a similar initiative is in motion involving Pakistan's scheduled T20I series against Afghanistan. On July 5, Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) Chairman Mirwais Ashraf confirmed that talks are underway to transform the series into a tri-nation tournament, with the United Arab Emirates (UAE) as the third team and host. Haris Rauf likely to be fit for WI tour

Pakistan fast bowler Haris Rauf will undergo rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) after suffering a hamstring injury during the ongoing Major League Cricket (MLC) 2025 while representing the San Francisco Unicorns. According to reports, Rauf is expected to begin his rehab in the coming week. He was not included in Pakistan's squad for the upcoming three-match T20I series against Bangladesh, scheduled to begin on July 20 in Dhaka. The rehabilitation process is expected to take approximately 10 to 12 days. If the right-arm pacer regains full fitness in time, he will be considered for selection for Pakistan's white-ball tour of the West Indies, scheduled for next month. Rauf has been a standout performer in MLC 2025, currently ranking as the second-highest wicket-taker with 17 wickets in eight matches at an economy rate of 9.08. On Tuesday, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) announced a 15-member squad for the T20I series against Bangladesh. All-rounder Agha Salman will continue to captain the side, while vice-captain Shadab Khan and Haris Rauf were both ruled out due to injuries. Shadab recently underwent successful shoulder surgery in the UK. The procedure was performed on his right shoulder, which had been bothering him for some time. Meanwhile, Cricket West Indies (CWI) has opened ticket sales for the upcoming white-ball series against Pakistan. The T20I series will begin on July 31 at the Broward County Stadium in Lauderhill, Florida, with the remaining two matches scheduled for August 2 and 3. This will be followed by a three-match ODI series in Trinidad, with matches scheduled for August 8, 10, and 12. The PCB had earlier proposed converting the ODI series into T20Is to provide more preparation for Pakistan in the shortest format ahead of the 2025 ACC Men's Asia Cup and the 2026 ICC Men's T20 World Cup, both of which will be played in the T20 format. However, despite ongoing discussions, CWI is reportedly inclined to stick with the originally agreed tour itinerary. While no official response has been issued yet, sources suggest the West Indies board is firm on retaining the current schedule, which includes both the T20I and ODI series. Pakistan squad for Bangladesh T20I series: Salman Ali Agha (captain), Abrar Ahmed, Ahmed Daniyal, Faheem Ashraf, Fakhar Zaman, Hassan Nawaz, Hussain Talat, Khushdil Shah, Mohammad Abbas Afridi, Mohammad Haris (wk), Mohammad Nawaz, Sahibzada Farhan (wk), Saim Ayub, Salman Mirza and Sufyan Moqim. Earlier, Pakistan's T20I captain, Salman Ali Agha, recently opened up in a candid interview with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), offering insights into his teammates' personalities and his own unique talents. Since taking on the T20I captaincy earlier this year, Agha has proven to be not only a leader on the field but also someone with a sense of humour off it. When asked to imagine his teammates in film roles, Agha had plenty of playful ideas. He placed Pakistan's top batter, Babar Azam, in the lead as the hero, while fast bowler Haris Rauf, with his fiery on-field persona, would fit the role of a villain. Agha also gave pacer Hasan Ali the title of the team's comedian and suggested Abdullah Shafique would be best suited for the role of a love-struck character. As for Fakhar Zaman, Agha cheekily cast him as a singer and said he would cast Zaman in a 'musical' role. Agha didn't stop there; he reflected on his own life choices, joking that if he weren't a cricketer, he would have likely been a businessman. He also revealed that, given a magical ability, he would erase social media platforms.

CWI unveils Pak series schedule

Pakistan and West Indies will play three T20Is and the same number of ODIs later this month. Photo: AFP/File Cricket West Indies (CWI) has started ticket sales for the upcoming white-ball series against Pakistan, with the first T20I scheduled to be played on July 31 at the Broward County Stadium in Lauderhill, Florida. This comes amid reports suggesting that the board is likely to reject a proposal from the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to modify the tour format. As part of the T20I promotion, cricket fans can now avail a special offer — two tickets for the price of one — while the cost of a single ticket has been slashed by 50%. The minimum price for ODI match tickets has been set at $8, while the maximum price is $175. The three-match T20I series is scheduled to take place at Central Broward Regional Park in Lauderhill, Florida, on July 31, August 2, and August 3. Following the T20Is, a three-match ODI series is set to be held in Trinidad on August 8, 10, and 12. The PCB had proposed converting the scheduled One Day Internationals (ODIs) into additional T20 Internationals (T20Is), aiming to provide the national team with more preparation in the shorter format ahead of key upcoming tournaments — the 2025 ACC Men's Asia Cup and the 2026 ICC Men's T20 World Cup, both of which will be played in the T20 format. However, despite ongoing discussions, CWI is reportedly inclined to maintain the originally agreed schedule. This means Pakistan will play both the three T20Is and the full ODI series as initially planned. CWI has yet to issue an official response to the PCB's proposal, but sources suggest the West Indies board is firm on sticking with the current itinerary. It is pertinent to mention that the Men in Green are also slated to tour Bangladesh for a three-match T20I series, with the opening match scheduled to be played on July 20 at the Shere-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium. According to details, the Pakistan men's cricket team will arrive in Bangladesh on July 16. The remaining T20Is will also be played at the same venue on July 22 and 24. All three matches are scheduled to begin at 5 PM Pakistan Standard Time. The camp, which began on June 16, featured over 40 male cricketers participating in rigorous training and fitness sessions aimed at sharpening their skills ahead of a busy cricketing season. Speaking to the media at the LCCA Ground, PCB Director High Performance, Aaqib Javed, reflected on the objectives and outcomes of the camp, noting its significance as the national side prepares for a packed home and away schedule. "Today marks the end of the final phase, which focused on some of the Pakistan Shaheens players ahead of their England tour. Earlier phases focused on player-coach interaction with our national men's team. Off-season is the ideal time for players to identify and address weaknesses, but our work doesn't stop here," Aaqib said. "You can't fix everything in a week, but these camps help us fill gaps—whether it's a spin all-rounder, a fast-bowling all-rounder, or wicketkeeping options.

'I want Pak team to be nation's pride'

Newly-appointed white ball head coach Mike Hesson is determined to shape Pakistan's cricketing future for years to come. PHOTO: PCB Pakistan's new white-ball head coach Mike Hesson appeared in a recent interview on the PCB Podcast, and shared his coaching philosophy and vision for the team's future. Speaking candidly with former Test cricketer Bazid Khan, Hesson discussed his approach to player development, team culture, and what he hopes to achieve during his tenure with the Pakistan national team. Looking ahead, Hesson's long-term goal is to leave a legacy that extends beyond immediate results. "I would like the Pakistan public to say, 'This is a great team to watch,'" he reflected. Hesson, who brings years of experience from previous coaching roles, including the New Zealand cricket team, highlighted that his focus as a coach isn't on dictating how players should perform but rather on maximising their individual talents. "Coaching is about trying to maximise talent. It's not necessarily about telling them about the greater things that I have played during my time," Hesson said. He also emphasised the importance of building strong relationships with players. "Once you understand a player's journey, you can add value," he explained, noting that coaching is a more holistic approach rather than a one-size-fits-all model. His strategy revolves around understanding each player's background, what motivates them, and their specific goals before offering tailored guidance. For Hesson, communication plays a pivotal role. "Players deserve the right to know what's expected of them," he added, stressing that technical coaching and constant observation are key to his method. "It's about observing a player first before deciding when to intervene," he said. A significant part of Hesson's plan involves working closely with Pakistan's domestic circuit to spot talent. He noted the importance of developing clear pathways for emerging players. "There'll be identified groups of players where I'll be keen to go and have a look, talk, and meet players," he said. "This will ensure that players are well-trained, versatile, and ready to step up when called upon for national duties." In the years to come, Hesson hopes to lay a foundation for success that will endure after his departure, ensuring a smooth succession for future coaches. "If when you leave, things fall over, then you haven't done a great job," he concluded, adding that his focus is on building a sustainable model. Hesson's approach appears to be driven by a strong sense of long-term planning, aiming to not only improve the current team but also shape Pakistan's cricketing future for years to come. Uncertainty surrounds Asia Cup 2025: report The fate of this year's ACC Men's Asia Cup hangs in balance due to the recent cross-border tensions between two cricketing giants, Pakistan and India. The six-team tournament, originally set to be hosted by India, now faces significant hurdles due to ongoing political tensions between the two neighbouring countries. Last month, reports emerged that the defending champions and host are eyeing to pull out of the tournament due to the aforementioned reasons but the claims were soon after quashed by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Meanwhile, as per the latest development, a top BCCI official has refused to confirm India's availability for the tournament, stating that they did not have any discussions regarding the Asia Cup. "To be honest, we have had no discussions within the board about the Asia Cup," a top official of the BCCI told Reuters, refusing to confirm whether the tournament will go ahead as scheduled. "We have been busy with the Indian Premier League and then we have India's tour of England. These are our immediate concerns," he added. Similarly, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) was also uncertain about its men's team's participation in the continental event as well. "We will cross that bridge when we come to it," the PCB told Reuters in a statement. Earlier this week, ACC also announced the postponement of the Women's Emerging Teams Asia Cup 2025, which was originally scheduled to begin on June 6 in Sri Lanka. The decision follows a request from Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) President Shammi Silva, who wrote to ACC President Mohsin Naqvi, seeking a postponement due to unfavourable weather conditions and growing health concerns related to the chikungunya virus outbreak in the region.
