Delhi HC allows new office-bearers to take charge at RFI

Pune: Balaji Maradappa, a former rower and coach, has taken over as president of the Rowing Federation of India after the Delhi High Court allowed the results of the national body's elections held last year to be declared and the new set of office-bearers to take charge. Maradappa, who was treasurer in the previous administration, took over from Rajlaxmi Singh Deo, who served as president for three terms. He tallied 36 votes against 14 by rival candidate Harpal Singh. Subhashish Mukherjee won the contest for the secretary's post with a 35-15 win against Rajpal Singh; Chiranjit Phukan beat Rajiv Sharma 37-11 for the treasurer's position. I have already had a meeting with the CEO and officials in SAI and the sports ministry. They have asked us to present a programme for ACTC (Annual Calendar for Training and Competition), because for more than a year things have not moved," said Maradappa, who is from the Tamil Nadu state association. "They have assured all the required support. 'Work towards winning medals for the country at the Asian Games and Olympics', is the message from them all." by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Heads Turn as Walgreens Shoppers Discover 87¢ ED Pills fridayplans Learn More Undo With the stringent rules of age and tenure limit under the sports code being extended to the state associations, some stalwart administrators have been asked to go. "Ramalinga Reddy of the Karnataka rowing association was barred because he was 70 years and three months. He is the state transport minister, he had helped build a beautiful (rowing) facility," Maradappa said. The Delhi Rowing Association had filed a petition in the Delhi HC early last year, seeking a stay on the elections citing RFI's non-compliance with the National Sports Code of 2011 as well as the ruling of a Division bench of the Delhi HC in the Rahul Mehra vs the Union of India case in August 2022. In response, the RFI brought to the court's attention that the petitioner itself was in violation of the Sports Code, prompting the court to allow the elections to go ahead on February 25, 2024, but with the ballot boxes to remain sealed. The court also asked the then set of office-bearers to continue to be in-charge till further orders and make the RFI code-compliant. In their latest order dated July 2nd, Justices Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya, Chief Justice, and Tushar Rao Gedela noted that the grievances of the DRA were relevant but keeping the results of the elections in abeyance indefinitely was "not conducive either to the institutions or the democratic values". "It is in the interest of administration of any institution, that too in a democratic setup like ours, to ensure that a duly elected body is in place to manage and administer the affairs of the institution," the judges wrote. "... keeping in view that the petitioner itself was, concededly, not eligible to participate in the elections ... coupled with the fact that more than one and half year has already passed since the elections were held, it does not appeal to reason as to why the result of the elections should not be declared and why the elected body should not be handed charge." The judges added that "the results of such election would be subject to the outcome of the present writ petition" as well as the Supreme Court's final verdict in the case involving the All India Football Federation. Shahrukh Ejaz, advocate in the Delhi HC for RFI, said the federation was confident about the final verdict as it had completed the compliance process. "We have also shared the new charter with the state associations and all of them except three associations have complied and provided an affidavit to that effect," he said. The three non-compliant units are Goa, Delhi and Manipur, Ejaz said.

Have 2026 Asiad Selection Plan Ready by Aug 29: Sports Secy to NSFs

Sports secretary Hari Ranjan Rao on Thursday urged National Sports Federations (NSFs) to finalise their selection mechanism for next year's Asian Games by August 29 to ensure a greater focus on preparations for the showpiece in Japan. Rao was addressing NSFs in the one-day 'Khelo Bharat Conclave' in the national capital where an action plan to take Indian sports forward is being discussed by various stakeholders, including sports minister Mansukh Mandaviya, representatives of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) and corporate houses, and prominent former athletes. "Let's have a selection plan for the Asian Games by August 29, which is also the National Sports Day (and the birth anniversary of hockey icon Dhyan Chand). If we do that, we will have one entire year to prepare ourselves," Rao, who is also the Director General of the Sports Authority of India (SAI), told the gathering. The Asian Games is scheduled to be held from September 19 to October 4 next year in Aichi-Nagoya. India would be aiming to better their best performance of 106 medals, including 28 gold, that was achieved in the previous edition in Hangzhou, China. Rao's suggestion to the NSFs comes months after the Sports Ministry laid down strict guidelines on selection processes for quadrennial showpieces and the world and continental championships. The ministry has asked NSFs to publicise the selection criteria for showpieces such as the Olympics, Paralympics, Asian Games, Para Asian Games and Commonwealth Games at least two years in advance. However, as is clear from Rao's statement, the plan is still a work in progress for next year's showpiece. The directives also make it mandatory for NSFs to upload selection policies on their respective websites and amend them only if there is a three-month window before a competition. It has also been made compulsory to videograph selection trials. Standardisation of the selection criteria has been a long-standing demand in sports like shooting where renowned pistol coach Jaspal Rana has stated that policies which are not codified in advance negatively impact athletes. Get Online Rao, who was formerly an additional secretary to the Prime Minister's Office (PMO), also called on the NSFs to digitise their Annual Calendar of Training and Competition (ACTC) and upload them on the National Sports Repository System in the next couple of months. "I request cooperation from everyone, let's go online by October 1. Let's get rid of this offline ACTC documentation," he said. Rao also revealed that three task forces, as mandated by the recently-released Khelo Bharat Niti, are in the works. "The three task forces would be entrusted with the responsibility of improving the quality of coaches, create a good pool of administrators and make India a sports manufacturing hub. These task forces would be constituted soon," he said. Also, the two labs for at the National Forensic Sciences University in Ahmedabad are now operational and testing supplements for possible presence of banned substances to ensure that athletes are saved from ingesting anything that is prohibited. "Our athletes, a lot of times, take supplements which are contaminated. They are not aware, and these labs will go a long way in saving them," Rao said. Good Governance With the National Sports Governance Bill, which emphasises on accountability of administrators set to be introduced in the Parliament next week, Rao said it is the right time for the NSFs to act. "I say on the upcoming National Sports Day, take a vow to announce three good governance measures in your NSF. It will reflect a commitment," he said.

Stepping Stones program seeking wig donations

ASHLAND, Ky. — The Cosmetology Program at Ashland Community and Technical College is seeking wig donations in support of their Stepping Stones program. The Stepping Stones program exists to provide local cancer patients who have suffered hair loss through chemotherapy with wigs free of charge. The program was launched in 2002 by former cosmetology program coordinator Patti Banfield, resulting in hundreds of wigs being provided over the years to those in need. 'There is an incredible need in our community for support services like this, and we're honored to be part of the solution,' said Kim Minnehan, ACTC advancement administrator. 'Through the Stepping Stones program, donated wigs are cleaned and styled by our talented cosmetology students and then offered free of charge to cancer patients. It's about more than just appearance—it's about dignity, hope, and helping people feel like themselves again during a difficult time.' "Cancer is such a heartbreaking disease,' said Mourine Smith, ACTC cosmetology program coordinator. 'It is our honor to be able to provide wigs to those who have been diagnosed. Cancer has the power to take so much away from the patient. Those who donate wigs to our program make a difference in the lives of those who are affected." Wigs can be dropped off at the ACTC Foundation Office, located on the College Drive Campus in Ashland.

‘New paediatric Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplant Ward expands access to life-saving care for children'

Dr Iyabo Tinubu-Karch, CEO of Sidra Medicine, said: 'The opening of our new paediatric Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplant Ward, the first of its kind in the country, marks a major step in expanding access to life-saving care for children in Qatar and the region. As the HSCT program grows, it will play a vital role in reducing the need for outbound referrals and in positioning Qatar as a center of excellence for pediatric cell and gene therapies. This is about building sustainable, high-quality care close to home for our patients and their families.' Prof. Ibrahim Janahi, Chief Medical Officer at Sidra Medicine, said: 'The launch of the HSCT Ward reflects our commitment to supporting the Qatar National Vision 2030. It strengthens the foundation of a knowledge-based economy by building national expertise in precision and regenerative medicine. Our goal is to ensure that every child in Qatar can access the best possible treatment, close to home and grounded in clinical excellence.' Managed by the Hematology and Oncology Division at Sidra Medicine, the new ward is designed exclusively for pediatric patients under the age of 18. It is divided into two main sections—one section for children undergoing HSCT and the other for patients with complex hematology-oncology diagnoses such as cancer, that require intensive chemotherapy and inpatient care. With an initial capacity of 20 beds, the new pediatric HSCT ward integrates cutting-edge infrastructure, including high-level isolation facilities that meet international infection control standards. It is scheduled to receive patients for autologous transplants in late June of 2025 with preparations underway to care for inpatient children who will undergo allogeneic transplants, at a later stage. Dr Ayman Saleh, Division Chief of Pediatric Hematology-Oncology & Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplant at Sidra Medicine, said: 'Our HSCT program brings together key specialties to deliver advanced and curative care for children with complex conditions. With four autologous procedures successfully completed and plans underway to offer allogeneic transplants in the near future, we are building a strong foundation for pediatric cellular therapy in Qatar. This service is a testament to the pioneering and family-centered care and cure approach that we offer to all our patients.' In addition to treating patients with various blood diseases and cancers, the HSCT program at Sidra Medicine is the core part of its precision medicine strategy to facilitate genomic research programs for pediatric autoimmune disorders, genetic and rare diseases. Sidra Medicine's HSCT program is further enhanced by a Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP)-qualified laboratory team operating under the Advanced Cell Therapy Core (ACTC). The ACTC manages the processing and cryopreservation of hematopoietic stem cells and is currently working toward Sidra Medicine's qualification as a treatment center for Casgevy, a gene therapy for thalassemia and sickle cell disease. Dr Chiara Cugno, Director of the Advanced Cell Therapy Core and GMP Facility at Sidra Medicine said: 'Our GMP-qualified laboratory is a key enabler in delivering safe and effective cellular therapies. By maintaining the highest standards in cell processing and cryopreservation, we are supporting precision treatments for children with cancer, blood, and immunologic disorders. It is an essential part of ensuring every child receives the most personalized care possible.' All HSCT program services will be open to both local and international patients, with more than 50 children currently awaiting transplantation in Qatar. Future phases for the HSCT program include scaling allogeneic transplant capacity and introducing CAR-T cell and gene therapies. The HSCT program includes a multidisciplinary team of specialized physicians, apheresis-trained staff, dedicated HSCT nurses, and allied health professionals. The Sidra Medicine care team also involves experts in immunology, infectious diseases, radiology, psychology, pharmacy, nutrition, child life, and social work. The integrated approach ensures comprehensive and patient-centered care throughout the transplant journey. Before a transplant, every child will go through a detailed evaluation at Sidra Medicine's outpatient clinic to ensure they are ready for the procedure. Once admitted, the children will undergo conditioning chemotherapy to prepare their bodies for the stem cell infusion. They will then be monitored very closely during the aplasia phase, when their immune system is at its weakest. Most patients will stay at the hospital for about 30 to 40 days. Following discharge, they will continue their care through regular follow-ups in an outpatient setting. In addition to medical and nursing care, Sidra Medicine offers support services for patients and families, including social work, clinical nurse specialists, and case management. While formal support groups are under development, ongoing engagement with families is embedded throughout the care process.
