The world from Modi's window seat: Tracking PM's flight around the planet!
Prime Minister Narendra Modi just completed his longest foreign trip in a decade. He visited five nations in Africa and South America in nine days. Starting from New Delhi on July 2, he flew to Ghana, Trinidad & Tobago, Argentina, Brazil, and Namibia, returning home on July 10. The PM's meetings and events on the ground have been widely covered. But what did his journey look like in the sky? What must Modi have seen from his window? India Today Fact Check tracked the PM's plane throughout the trip, using tools like FlightRadar24, FlightAware, and ADSBexchange. Here's what you would have seen if you were travelling with PM Modi across three continents! Modi flew 40,892 kilometres in total. That's more than the circumference of the planet! This means that if Modi would have flown in a straight line over Earth's centre, he would have finished a full circle. The PM departed early in the morning on July 2 from New Delhi in his custom-made Boeing 777-300ER. The flight is called INDIA ONE, which was also its call sign during this trip (the number through which a flight is identified in air). This state-of-the-art plane has been specially designed and includes facilities like a VVIP suite, two conference rooms, a press briefing room, a medical room, and secure communications system. The aircraft is fitted with sophisticated missile defence systems. It also has an air-to-air refuelling facility, allowing for long seamless flights across the globe. On the way to Ghana, Modi's flight flew over Lake Victoria, the second biggest freshwater lake in the world, which is bigger than the entire country of Sri Lanka! Lake Victoria was NOT the only huge water body Modi must have seen from his plane's window. In fact, his plane flew over seas and oceans for 23 hours in total during the nine days. His total flight time was almost 46 hours. That means his plane flew over waves for half the journey. The first leg of Modi's journey from New Delhi to Ghana's capital Accra was also the longest. He reached Accra in the afternoon (local time) after flying non-stop for 11 hours, covering almost 10,000 kilometres. Notably, his flight took a much longer route avoiding the air spaces of Pakistan, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, and Chad. As a result, he had to fly 1500 kilometers extra. Pakistan, Iran, and Sudan are troubled areas. From Accra, Modi flew to Port of Spain, the capital of Trinidad and Tobago the following day. Trinidad and Tobago, the two main islands in the country, are in the southernmost part of the Caribbean. This was the first visit to the South American island nation by an Indian Prime Minister in 25 years. Modi became the first foreign leader to receive the Order of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, the nation's highest civilian honour. The next stop was Buenos Aires, the capital of Argentina. He arrived at Ezeiza International Airport on Friday evening (local time) and was given a ceremonial welcome. PM Modi's visit was the first 'bilateral visit' by an Indian PM in 57 years. He was conferred the Key to the City of Buenos Aires. He had previously visited the country in 2018 to attend the G20 Summit. From the land of Messi, Modi hopped over to Brazil, the land of Neymar Jr. In Rio de Janeiro, Modi attended the biggest event of this trip, the BRICS Summit. At the end of the Summit, the BRICS chair was handed over to India, which will host the 18th Summit in 2026. From Rio, one the most famous tourist destinations in the world, Modi went to Brazil's capital Brasilia for a bilateral meet. There, President Lula da Silva, who had only recently discovered Modi is vegetarian, made a lighthearted remark about selling cheese to India. He said: 'Arrange a box of cheese. I want it on the table, so he (Modi) never complains about Brazilian food and, who knows, maybe he'll start buying Brazilian cheese.' Early on July 9, Modi arrived in Windhoek in his first ever visit to Namibia. Modi was conferred with Namibia's highest civilian award, the Order of the Most Ancient Welwitschia Mirabilis by President Nandi-Ndaitwah. Namibia became the first country globally to sign a licensing agreement to adopt India's UPI. From Namibia, his last destination on this trip, Modi left for India on July 9 evening, reaching India early on July 10 at 8.14 am. This journey took almost 10 hours, covering a distance of 8,700 kilometres. Throughout the trip, his double-jet aircraft soared roughly at a height of 36,000 feet, at an average speed of around 1,000 kilometres per hour.

DC plane crash: Mapping the flight paths that put jet and helicopter on collision course
At least 67 people are presumed dead after an Army Black Hawk helicopter collided with a regional passenger jet attempting to land at Reagan National on Wednesday night. After colliding, both aircraft plunged into the dark and frigid Potomac River. This is what we know so far: The aircraft collided over the Potomac River D.C. has restricted and congested airspace Those who fly in and out of Reagan Washington National Airport – a scant three miles from the White House and two miles from the Pentagon – say it's a complicated airspace to navigate. The sky around the busy airport serving the nation's heavily populated capital is hemmed in by restrictions imposed due to national security and other concerns. What's left is shared by commercial, civilian and military aircraft. The Federal Aviation Administration usually requires aircraft to fly above the Potomac River, which shrinks air traffic volume to a narrow corridor. Aircraft must maintain specified altitudes to reduce noise levels in residential and tourist areas, including the National Mall. The Black Hawk helicopter left Davison Army Airfield at Fort Belvoir in Virginia, about 15 miles southwest of the airport, authorities said Thursday. The helicopter was on a "routine annual re-training of night flights on a standard corridor for a continuity of government mission" when it crashed, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth said in a video statement posted to X on Thursday morning. American Airlines Flight 5342 departed Wichita, Kansas, on Wednesday afternoon for a flight to Reagan National. The crew was 'fairly experienced,' and was conducting a night evaluation, Hegseth said. Night goggles were on board. Hegseth says that "a mistake was made" and that there was "some sort of an elevation issue." The helicopter may not have been equipped with ADS-B In-flight aircraft are tracked by air traffic control and other aircraft with special communications systems: ADS-B: Automatic Dependent Surveillance Broadcast is a primary system that automatically transmits an aircraft's position, using GPS-based latitude and longitude. Mode S: Mode Select is a secondary surveillance and communication system, an aircraft transponder that sends data to air traffic controllers and other aircraft. MLAT: Known as multilateration, this system applies mathmatical calculations to Mode S signals to triangulate an aircraft's position. ADSBexchange was able to triangulate the flight path of the helicopter using multilateration (MLAT). FlightRadar24 describes MLAT as a flight tracking technique that determines aircraft position by measuring the time difference of arrival (TDOA) of signals sent from the aircraft to multiple ground to Dan Streufert, founder and president of flight tracking network ADSBexchange, the passenger jet was broadcasting ADS-B data, which details an aircraft's position, including GPS-based latitude and longitude. However, the helicopter was not broadcasting ADS-B and was only broadcasting Mode S, a secondary surveillance and communication system. Strufert says that because MLAT is a function of the receiver network it was possible to triangulate an approximate flight path even without ADS-B data. While FlightRadar24's network did not have enough nearby receivers, the ADSBexchange network had at least 4-6 in the area. The path appears a bit jagged due to the lack of precision. Streufert says that it appears that the Black Hawk may not have been equipped with ADS-B at all — however it did have a transponder, and would have been visible on air traffic control radar in either case. Without ADS-B broadcasting, the helicopter would not have been "invisible", but would be "less visible" to the jet. The jet would have been equipped with Traffic Alert and Collision Avoidance System (TCAS), which, at a higher altitude would have likely prevented this collision. Streufert adds that "TCAS would have issued a traffic advisory under most circumstances, even without ADSB. However, TCAS is inhibited at low altitudes around airports to avoid nuisance/false alarms due to aircraft taxiing, etc."Why would the helicopter not have had ADS-B? Streufert says that security and cost issues are often cited, though he thinks integration with the civilian air traffic system would argue in favor of installing the equipment. "While civilian aircraft are required to be equipped in most US airspace, the FAA does not have the ability to mandate this for military aircraft. The military has been slow to deploy ADSB, especially on it's smaller aircraft", said Streufert. 'You are not expecting a piece of traffic or helicopter or plane so close to you and so close to the ground.' Higgins said one plausible theory has emerged that air traffic controls instructed the UH-60 Black Hawk to maintain separation from the regional jet and those pilots identified the incorrect aircraft. Higgins said pilot proficiency of the regional air carrier or military would be deeply examined along with all the communications and actions by the National Transportation Safety Board. The NTSB will also examine whether the helicopter was communicating with traffic controllers on a different radio frequency that the commercial pilots. The Bombardier regional jet was equipped with a traffic alert and collision avoidance system aimed at alerting pilots of a hazard, but so close to the airport and ground, Higgins said the system often 'declutters' the clusters of planes on the radar system and goes into 'inhibit mode' which blocks the alerts in certain landing phases. 'Obviously something went catastrophically wrong,' Higgins said. Audio recordings from air traffic controllers captured dramatic communications before and after the collision. a respected source for in-flight recording, recorded the moments before and after the crash, according to reporting from Reuters. The audio details communications between air traffic controllers and other aircraft, as well as the the final communication attempt with the three Army crew members in the helicopter – call sign PAT25 – before the collision with the jet.
