Malcolm-Jamal Warner of ‘The Cosby Show' dies at 54 in drowning accident

LOS ANGELES/SAN JOSE: American actor Malcolm-Jamal Warner, best known for his role as Theo Huxtable on the iconic 1980s sitcom *The Cosby Show*, has died at the age of 54. Authorities confirmed his death was due to drowning after being caught in a rip current while vacationing in Costa Rica. According to Costa Rica's judicial investigation department (OIJ), Warner was pulled out to sea by strong currents and pronounced dead at the scene by Red Cross lifeguards. His representatives have yet to issue a statement regarding the incident. Warner rose to fame as Theo Huxtable, the only son of Cliff Huxtable, played by Bill Cosby, in *The Cosby Show*. The series, which aired from 1984 to 1992, was groundbreaking for its positive portrayal of a Black American family, countering prevailing stereotypes of the time. Born on August 18, 1970, in Jersey City, New Jersey, Warner was named after civil rights leader Malcolm X and jazz musician Ahmad Jamal. His mother, Pamela, managed his early acting career, which led him to attend The Professional Children's School in New York. Though he had minor roles before *The Cosby Show*, his performance as Theo became his breakout role, earning him an Emmy nomination in 1986 for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series. Warner later appeared in spin-off *A Different World* and had notable roles in *Sons of Anarchy* and *Suits*. Warner, who was private about his personal life, is survived by his wife and daughter, whose names he never publicly disclosed. - Reuters

Happy Birthday Cree Summer: Celebrating The Iconic Voice Behind Our Favorite Characters

Source: Alberto E. Rodriguez / Getty Happy Birthday, Cree Summer! Today (July 7), marks the birthday of one of the most legendary voices in the game. From dropping gems as the free-spirited Freddie on A Different World to voicing some of the most iconic animated Black girls on TV, Cree has been shaping culture, one character at a time. Check out our favorite Cree roles inside. Let's talk resume: Cree isn't just a voice actor. She's the voice actor. The blueprint. She brought depth, soul, and unapologetic Black girl energy to characters we still quote and cosplay to this day. Back in the '90s, she stole our hearts as Freddie Brooks, the boho, brilliant and beautifully awkward law student on A Different World . Freddie was ahead of her time, speaking about racial justice, feminism, spirituality. Cree gave her a vibe nobody else could. It's animation where Cree truly became a cultural juggernaut. She gave us Susie Carmichael on Rugrats —the fearless, affirming toddler who ALWAYS checked Angelica. Susie was smart, sweet, and one of the few Black characters holding it down in a sea of white baby chaos. Then came Numbuh 5 on Codename: Kids Next Door , who was the candy-loving, unbothered, smooth-talking squad leader we all secretly wanted to be. Cree's chill delivery gave Numbuh 5 a level of cool that still lives rent-free in our heads. Don't forget her early work as Penny in Inspector Gadget or when she really showed out as Princess Kida in Atlantis: The Lost Empire . From Tiny Toon Adventures to Danny Phantom , Cree's catalog is deeper than your favorite rapper's discography. Cree didn't just voice characters, but she gave fans representation. She made sure Black girls saw themselves in magical, funny, brilliant ways that weren't happening enough in animation. She's the reason we saw ourselves as heroes, queens, and rebels with a cause. Today, we're giving Cree her flowers. Whether she's portraying our favorite cartoon characters or just popping up across our timelines with her unforgettable energy, she's been holding it down for decades. Happy Birthday, Cree! Thank you for raising generations of unapologetic, animated, magical Black girls. You're forever the voice of a movement. 'A Different World' Revival Begins Filming at Clark Atlanta University

Source: Prince Williams / Getty A cultural reset is in motion— A Different World is officially making its return, and this time, it's not just a trip down memory lane. Netflix has begun filming the pilot for the long-anticipated sequel to the iconic sitcom, and they're doing it in the heart of HBCU culture—on the campus of Clark Atlanta University. The original series, which aired from 1987 to 1993, was more than just a spin-off of The Cosby Show . It became a defining force in pop culture, reshaping how the world viewed Historically Black Colleges and Universities. Through the halls of the fictional Hillman College, the show tackled real-life issues—racism, relationships, class, activism, and self-identity—all while celebrating Black excellence and higher education. Now, more than 30 years later, that legacy is being reignited for a new generation. This reboot isn't just about nostalgia—it's about relevance. By choosing Clark Atlanta University as the filming location, the show is grounding itself in real-time HBCU experiences. The city of Atlanta—often dubbed the 'Black Mecca'—is already home to an active network of HBCUs, culture-shifting creatives, and social impact movements. Filming on a living, breathing campus is a direct acknowledgment that HBCUs are not relics of the past but incubators of innovation, style, leadership, and cultural influence. While plot details are still under wraps, fans can expect fresh faces and new storylines that speak to today's world—mental health, social media, gender politics, student activism, and the ever-evolving Black identity. The revival promises to reflect the vibrant, complex reality of Black student life in 2025 while paying homage to the spirit that made the original series so beloved.
