Jammu AIIMS launches laser ablation services for varicose vein patients
Jammu, May 29 (UNI) All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Jammu has marked a significant milestone with the successful commencement of Endovenous Laser Ablation (EVLA) services for the treatment of varicose veins patients under the department of Radiodiagnosis and Imaging. The first case was recently performed in the state-of-the-art Interventional Radiology (IR) suite, signalling a new era of minimally invasive vascular care at the institute with the esteemed support of ED and CEO, Prof (Dr) Shakti Kumar Gupta, the official spokesman said. He said varicose veins are the enlarged, twisted veins often affecting the lower limbs — can cause considerable discomfort and complications if left untreated. EVLA, a minimally invasive, ultrasound-guided procedure used by interventional radiologists, uses laser energy to close off these problematic veins, offering patients a safe and effective alternative as a daycare procedure. It is almost a scarless and sutureless procedure with good treatment outcomes and quicker recovery time. The spokesman said that the procedure was performed by a team of skilled radiologists led by Dr Ankit Prabhakar, Assistant Professor, Radiodiagnosis and Imaging with other Faculty members, senior residents, nursing officers and other staff members. Speaking on the development, the Radiologist's team at the Department of Radiodiagnosis and Imaging emphasised the importance of such advanced interventions in addressing vascular health issues in the region. Varicose vein patients are now been routinely evaluated in IR OPD at AIIMS. "Patients with symptoms such as leg swelling, pain, skin changes, or visible varicosities are encouraged to consult the Interventional Radiology OPD at AIIMS Jammu for assessment and eligibility for EVLA," said the spokesman. "This is the first IR care centre in Jammu offering such minimally invasive treatment options to patients," she said adding that moreover, the commencement of IR OPD is first of its kind in whole union territory of J&K with AIIMS Jammu pioneering the same. The Head of the Department and Officer-in-Charge of the Department of Radiodiagnosis and Imaging, Dr. Gita, said that Radiology at AIIMS, Jammu, is equipped with and will be advanced with more imaging intervention services in the very near future. Prof (Dr) Shakti Kumar Gupta ED and CEO, AIIMS Jammu added that 'The introduction of EVLA marks a significant leap forward in the range of interventional radiology services offered at AIIMS Jammu. This initiative is part of AIIMS Jammu's ongoing commitment to bringing world-class, patient-centered medical care to the region and establishing itself as a hub for advanced interventional procedures in future." BHISHM medical cubes deployed in J&K hospitals under Aarogya Maitri project
BHISHM cubes, the indigenous portable modular medical facility, are being deployed at prominent hospitals such as AIIMS Jammu and SKIMS Srinagar near India's border under the government's Aarogya Maitri project to bolster medical readiness, officials said on Friday. The development comes on the heels of Union Health Minister J P Nadda on Friday reviewing health infrastructure preparedness across hospitals in the country amid the ongoing Operation Sindoor and the ongoing India-Pakistan military conflict, official sources said. These BHISHM cubes are also being stationed in other Institutes of National Importance (INIs) across India, including AIIMS in Rishikesh, Bilaspur and Delhi, they said. "We are also providing operational training to the respective medical institutes where BHISHM cubes have been deployed. So far two BHISHM cubes have been deployed at AIIMS, Jammu and more are being diverted to this centre. "Besides, around 35 other BHISHM cubes so far have been deployed across other Institutes of National Importance (INIs) across India," said Air Vice Marshal Dr Tanmoy Roy, HLL Lifecare. Dr Roy said HLL Life Care Ltd under the Union Health Ministry is the nodal agency for the procurement and deployment of Aarogya Maitri Cube. BHISHM cubes are portable and rapidly deployable modular medical facilities to provide emergency lifesaving clinical care in the event of disaster or public health emergencies. Each cube is equipped with medicines and surgical equipment for basic operations, and it has the capacity to handle around 200 diverse emergency cases. The cube comprises 72 easily transportable components, designed for versatile delivery methods including hand-carry, bicycle or even drone transport. The aid cube is equipped with several innovative tools designed to enhance disaster response and medical support during emergencies. It integrates Artificial Intelligence (AI) and data analytics to facilitate effective coordination, real-time monitoring and efficient management of medical services in the field. Being robust, waterproof and lightweight, the cubes are also built to withstand harsh conditions. Their flexible configuration allows deployment in diverse emergency scenarios. The system can be quickly dispatched via airdrop or ground transportation, ensuring swift response to crises anywhere. In the wake of Operation Sindoor, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday chaired a high-level meeting with secretaries of various ministries and called for continued alertness and clear communication, while reaffirming the government's commitment to national security and operational preparedness. The Indian armed forces are on high alert in the wake of the current hostilities between New Delhi and Islamabad following the Pahalgam terrorist attack of April 22 and India's strike on terror targets in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) in retaliation. Pakistani forces are targetting border areas on the Indian side, killing at least 13 people and injuring others.

AIIMS Jammu launches centre for advanced genomics, precision medicine to boost cancer care
Jammu: The All-India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Jammu on Monday launched the Centre for Advanced Genomics and Precision Medicine to boost affordable, precision-driven cancer care with advanced Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) technology. The Centre, developed in collaboration with oncology company 4baseCare, is equipped with the Illumina NextSeq 2000 sequencing machine, offering comprehensive genomic profiling for cancer patients. The powerful technology enables clinicians to design highly personalised, targeted treatment plans tailored to each patient's unique molecular profile. AIIMS Jammu announced its collaboration with 4baseCare in January. 'For every patient we treat, we are treating a mother, a father, a sister, or a brother. This partnership is our promise to every family who walks through our doors that we will do everything in our power to bring them the care they deserve,' Prof (Dr) Shakti Kumar Gupta, Executive Director and CEO, AIIMS Jammu. 'By integrating cutting-edge genomic data with AI-powered diagnostics, the Centre is poised to significantly improve early disease detection, refine therapy choices, and minimise ineffective treatments -- ultimately enhancing both patient outcomes and quality of life,' said Dr. Sudharshan Elangovan, Vice President – Global Operations at 4baseCare. Traditionally, access to such advanced genomic testing has been prohibitively expensive for many patients. However, with this initiative, high-quality NGS-based tests will now be made available at affordable costs, paving the way for greater inclusivity in precision oncology across India. Further solidifying its role as a national referral hub, the Centre will accept samples from patients and healthcare providers across the country, ensuring that cutting-edge molecular diagnostics are accessible, regardless of geographical barriers. The Centre will focus on targeted, biomarker-driven therapies, enabling personalised treatment plans to improve outcomes and quality of life of cancer patients. Using genomics the facility also aims to tackle rare diseases. And to boost healthier pregnancies, the centre will integrate cutting-edge genetic technologies such as Non-Invasive Prenatal Testing (NIPT), Preimplantation Genetic Screening (PGS), and Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD).
