AMCH doc 1st from NE to get nat'l-level medical award for cancer research
Dibrugarh: Dr Gayatri Gogoi, associate professor at Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH) and adjunct researcher at ICMR-Regional Medical Research Centre, North East, on Sunday broke new ground as she became the first from the northeast to be honoured with the coveted Blackbuck Pioneer Researcher Award for her contributions to cancer research, during a ceremony in Delhi. Gogoi was presented with the award during 'Research Summit', which was organised by Medical Dialogues, a premier medical news group, and National Medical Forum. Recognizing her dual excellence in research and patient care, the award highlighted her dedication to advancing medical knowledge to support cancer patients and their families in the northeast. Gogoi was selected by a distinguished jury, comprising of former director general of ICMR, dean of Maulana Azad Medical College, HOD cardiology of PGI Chandigarh and other leading medical professionals from across India. "Research is not just about academic achievement, it's about translating knowledge for better outcomes for patients. My focus has always been on bridging the gap between laboratory findings and clinical applications for cancer patients in our region," Gogoi said after receiving the award. She also serves as an International Fellow at the College of American Pathologists, apart from chairing the genomic consortium of the northeast. Beyond her research, Gogoi has made significant contributions to community healthcare through her role as an honorary member of Pratishruti Cancer and Palliative Trust, where she has designed and implemented several successful community-oriented cancer care projects. Sarma launches infra projects worth Rs 504 crore at DU, AMCH
1 2 3 4 5 6 Dibrugarh: CM Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday launched a massive infrastructural development initiative in Dibrugarh worth Rs 504 crore, laying foundation stones for projects at Dibrugarh University and Assam Medical College & Hospital (AMCH). The comprehensive development programme encompasses two of the region's premier educational institutions, with Dibrugarh University receiving projects worth Rs 147 crore, while AMCH benefiting from a massive Rs 357 crore investment involving residential and academic infrastructure. "This is a historic day for the people of Dibrugarh. With these projects at Dibrugarh University and AMCH we have taken one step forward in our endeavour to establish Dibrugarh as the second capital of Assam. These projects will transform Dibrugarh University and AMCH into premier institutions with world-class facilities. Our govt is committed to providing students and faculty with an environment conducive to learning, research and holistic development," CM Sarma said. The CM's Special Grant will fund several critical infrastructural projects, including a girls' hostel block accommodating 324 students, 16 new housing quarters for faculty and staff, extensive repair and extension of internal roads, a modern sports complex and a fully equipped gymnasium. Under the PM-USHA scheme, the university will receive additional student accommodation through a girls' hostel block with 176 beds, along with academic infrastructure, including a six-storied academic building and a three-storied research centre. Later in the day, the CM laid the foundation for residential and hostel facilities at AMCH worth Rs 357 crore. The project will be executed by the public works (health & education) department and will come up on the 504 bigha AMCH campus. The project includes extensive faculty accommodation, with two residential blocks housing 40 senior faculty flats and three blocks providing 60 junior faculty residences. Special quarters for the principal, vice-principals and medical superintendent have also been planned as part of the housing scheme. Student accommodation will see substantial expansion with the construction of multiple hostel blocks, catering to different categories of students and staff. The plan includes a 500-capacity female MBBS hostel, a 225-bed male MBBS facility and separate postgraduate hostels accommodating 232 female and 200 male students.

The announcement was made during a foundation stone laying ceremony for infrastructure development projects worth Rs 357 crore at the AMCH campus. The CM revealed that the proposal for the seat enhancement is currently in its final approval stage, with the govt optimistic about implementing the additional 50 seats this year. "In 1947, Assam Medical College started MBBS course with 57 students. Now we have 200 MBBS seats. Hopefully we will be able to add another 50 seats taking the total number of MBBS seats to 250 from this year itself," Sarma said. This expansion represents a 25% increase in the institution's intake capacity, marking a significant milestone for medical education in Assam. Dibrugarh: CM Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday laid the foundation stone for the ambitious extension of AMCH, with a new state-of-the-art hospital at Jail Road in Dibrugarh, marking a significant milestone in Assam's healthcare transformation journey. "This hospital will be a milestone in Assam's journey towards providing world-class medical facilities. This hospital will complement the existing AMCH infrastructure and create a comprehensive healthcare ecosystem for the people. This project represents our vision of accessible, quality healthcare for all. The strategic location of the hospital will make advanced medical services easily accessible to people from across Dibrugarh district and neighboring areas," Sarma said, while addressing a public rally at the old high school playground, after laying the foundation stone. The six-storey city hospital is being constructed under the Assam State Secondary Healthcare Initiative for Service Delivery Transformation (ASSIST). This comprehensive programme is designed to revolutionize the state's healthcare infrastructure, aiming to ensure better healthcare services reach every citizen while establishing Assam as a healthcare hub.

Hospital holds rally to raise awareness of schizophrenia
Over 200 Tiruchi residents participated in an awareness rally organised by Athma Mind Care Hospital (AMCH) to observe World Schizophrenia Day on Saturday. The rally was flagged off on AMCH premises by P. Azeem, Inspector of Police, Thillai Nagar. AMCH consultant psychiatrists M. Sridhar and M. Rajaram spoke on the importance of early diagnosis and support for individuals living with schizophrenia, a mental disorder characterised by disruptions in thought processes, perceptions and emotional responsiveness. The initiative aimed to destigmatise schizophrenia and encourage community understanding through public engagement and awareness. Participants marched with placards and slogans advocating mental health care and inclusion.
