UG Medical admissions begin: Students complain of not being able to proceed with application for lack of APAAR ID number

As registration for undergraduate (UG) medical admissions started in Maharashtra, the system is demanding applicants to submit APAAR ID number. While it is not a mandatory field in the application form, several candidates complained they are not able to proceed with their application without putting a valid APAAR ID number. Authorities however refuted the issue stating that there is no such hurdle as candidates are allowed to proceed even after keeping that box empty. The Automated Permanent Academic Account Registry (APAAR) ID is a 12-digit unique identification number for each student of India under the One Nation One Student programme of the central government, which serves as a digital identity of the students for seamless process of tracking of academic records, transfer of credits with digital storage facility. As the Maharashtra Common Entrance Test (CET) Cell declared the commencement of UG medical admissions on Wednesday, the online registration process started. Submitting APAAR ID is a new requirement in the application form. Due to lack of awareness around APAAR ID among candidates, along with no knowledge on how and where to generate it, this requirement is causing confusion among students. Sudha Shenoy, a parent representative who is also helping candidates in the registration process, said, 'It does not show as a mandatory field. Yet an applicant is unable to move forward without putting a valid APAAR ID.' Shenoy further questioned that there is no such requirement of APAAR ID in the All-India admission medical admissions process which is taking place simultaneously. 'Why is the Maharashtra government enforcing it?' Brijesh Sutaria, another parent representative, said, 'The CET cell should provide a detailed instructional video or booklet on APAAR ID and the generation process. Generation of APAAR ID requires one to have Digilocker access. In order to ensure all this, the applicants have to exit the medical admission registration process.' State CET Cell Commissioner Dilip Sardesai however stated that it is unlikely to cause an issue as submitting APAAR ID is not mandatory on the application form. Urging that candidates should not be confused, he said, 'They can proceed with the application process even without an APAAR ID. Our technical wing has verified it. Already over 6,000 candidates have successfully completed registration, including some who have not filled in their APAAR ID number.' Highlighting that there is no systemic error, Sardesai pointed out that there may be an issue if anybody is keying incorrect APAAR ID, which the system will not accept.

Dakshina Kannada achieves high student registry coverage of 82.1%

Mangaluru: Dakshina Kannada (DK) district has reached close to 82.1% coverage in generating Automated Permanent Academic Account Registry (APAAR) IDs, a mandatory requirement for students from kindergarten to Class XII Samagra Shikshana Karnataka, which oversees the process, pointed out that despite this, DK tops the state from day one of its implementation. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The process for the current academic year for those who joined kindergarten and Class I is yet to commence. The officials have requested parents to keep all documents clear as the APAAR ID will be required for various academic-related works in the future. The data of every candidate's academic performance is accessed through it. Officials from SSK said that the major hurdle in not achieving 100% registration is because Dakshina Kannada has a lot of migrants coming from north Karnataka. There are also a few from other districts. "The Aadhaar card is primarily used to create the APAAR ID. However, the issue is that names and other credentials don't match each other. The spelling and address are wrong, which is a major complaint. As a result, the officials are unable to generate it. Also, they must go to their native places to rectify it, where they visit once or twice a year," an official said. A teacher from a govt school near Bokkapatna, that sees the highest number of admissions from north Karnataka, shared a similar concern. "We have so far been able to complete 80% registration. The rest is pending due to a mismatch of Aadhaar details. The name we have entered in the Student Tracking System is not there on the card. There are multiple spelling mistakes in their names. If there is a single spelling mistake, the system fails to complete the process," the teacher said. Govinda Madivala, DDPI, Dakshina Kannada, said that the APAAR ID, an initiative started across the country last academic year, enhances efficiency, removes duplicity, minimises fraud, facilitates student mobility, and enhances academic flexibility. Therefore, every parent should provide the right documents for the process. This ID functions as a permanent digital identity for the student in the education ecosystem. "The ID will be integrated with entrance exams in the coming year," he said.

UP Board to crack down on age fraud in High School exams

The Uttar Pradesh Madhyamik Shiksha Parishad, commonly known as UP Board, is to step up efforts to combat age fraud in High School examinations. Addressing the issue at the annual general meeting of the School Games Federation of India (SGFI) held in New Delhi on June 14, UP Board secretary Bhagwati Singh announced plans to introduce stronger, technology-driven safeguards to prevent the misuse of forged documents in student registrations. The problem is particularly prevalent in the sports sector, where overage athletes manipulate their birth records to compete in younger age categories. As the largest school board in the country, the UP Board has been a prime target for such fraudulent activities. Singh said, 'We are committed to making the registration process more secure and foolproof.' One of the key solutions under consideration is the integration of Aadhaar and APAAR ID (Automated Permanent Academic Account Registry) into the student registration process. 'Linking these digital identity systems will help ensure data authenticity and minimise age-related fraud,' Singh said, after returning to Prayagraj from the meeting. The APAAR ID is a 12-digit unique student identifier launched under the Union government's 'One Nation, One Student ID' initiative, as part of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. It allows students to digitally store and access their academic records, thus serving as a lifelong academic identity. At the SGFI meeting, Uttar Pradesh was also recognised for organising the best sporting events, with secretary Bhagwati Singh receiving the award on behalf of the state. The gathering also ratified previous resolutions and discussed future action plans and strategic initiatives to strengthen the education ecosystem.
