I'm convinced I know exact iPhone 17 release date WEEKS before big Apple reveal – and I guessed last year's right too

We also reveal a big change for one of the new models PHONE HOME I'm convinced I know exact iPhone 17 release date WEEKS before big Apple reveal – and I guessed last year's right too APPLE is nearly ready to show off its next big iPhone – and I reckon I've guessed the date. I'm The Sun's tech editor and I've been writing about the iPhone for years. Last year, I guessed the release date for the iPhone 16, so I'm giving it another go for the iPhone 17 too. 3 Apple chief Tim Cook looks set to announce as many as four new iPhones later this year Credit: Apple 3 The iPhone 16 Pro is due to be replaced very soon Credit: Apple The iPhone 17 release date isn't public yet and won't be for weeks. Apple will announce it during its annual September iPhone event – although that hasn't been confirmed either. But the company is a creature of habit, which means it's possible to make a fairly decent guess at when the next model will come out. This year, Apple is rumoured to be mixing things up with an ultra-slim iPhone 17 model, replacing the usual Plus version. But first, when is it out? iPhone 17 release date prediction Last year I guessed that the iPhone 16 would go up for pre-order on Friday, September 13 before an on-sale date of Friday, September 20. It turned out to be a spot-on prediction. Hopefully my crystal ball (or crystal apple?) won't fail me again this year. Apple usually shows off its blockbuster iPhone for the year in September. It's typically in the first half of the month on a Tuesday or Wednesday. That would typically be followed by pre-orders on the Friday, with the release date exactly one week later. In 2025, I'm guessing that the iPhone 17 launch will take place on Tuesday, September 9. It seems to be the safer pick versus Wednesday in recent years. iPhone 16e review – I've secretly tested Apple's cheapest mobile and I love the new button but that's not the best bit Based on that, we'd expect pre-orders on Friday, September 12 – and an official release on Friday, September 19. Working backwards – based on previous years – I'd guess that Apple will announce its event via invitations on Tuesday, August 26, 2025. And for the big new iOS release (this year it's iOS 26), we'd expect it to drop the Monday after the big reveal. That's Monday, September 15. Here's a recap of all those dates: iPhone 17 event announcement – Tuesday, August 26 iPhone 17 event – Tuesday, September 9 iPhone 17 pre-orders – Friday, September 12 iOS 19 release – Monday, September 15 iPhone 17 release date – Friday, September 19 Of course there's no guarantee that Apple will stick to this schedule – or even come close to it. But it's my best prediction based on the company's iPhone release history so far. IOS 26 SUPPORTED DEVICES – THE FULL LIST Here are the iOS 26 supported devices... iPhone 16e iPhone 16 ‌iPhone 16‌ Plus iPhone 16 Pro ‌iPhone 16 Pro‌ Max iPhone 15 ‌iPhone 15‌ Plus ‌iPhone 15‌ Pro ‌iPhone 15‌ Pro Max ‌iPhone‌ 14 ‌iPhone‌ 14 Plus ‌iPhone‌ 14 Pro ‌iPhone‌ 14 Pro Max ‌iPhone‌ 13 ‌iPhone‌ 13 mini ‌iPhone‌ 13 Pro ‌iPhone‌ 13 Pro Max ‌iPhone‌ 12 iPhone 12 mini ‌iPhone‌ 12 Pro iPhone 12 Pro Max ‌iPhone‌ 11 ‌iPhone‌ 11 Pro iPhone 11 Pro Max iPhone SE (3rd gen) iPhone‌ SE (2nd gen) Picture Credit: Apple What could potentially throw a spanner in the works is if one or more of the models don't come until later on. It's possible that some models release earlier than others. That's happened in previous years. Ultimately Apple hasn't announced any of this, so even if these are the plans, they could still change. But if you're desperate for an iPhone 17, you can at least mark your calendar in pencil. iPhone 17 – what to expect? So what will we actually see from Apple this year? 3 All of the new iPhone 17 models will run on iOS 26 Credit: Apple The big rumour is that Apple is abandoning its Plus model. So we'd still get an iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max. But there would be a mysterious fourth device that's ultra-thin. It's rumoured as the iPhone 17 Air, but the name could be something else entirely. The Air branding would be in keeping with Apple's MacBook and iPad ranges, and it could be as thin as 6mm. By contrast, the iPhone 16 was 7.8mm thick. This svelte gadget is expected to fall between the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Pro in terms of pricing. Screen sizes could come in slightly bigger this year, rising by 0.1-0.2 inches per model. And all four devices are expected to feature 120Hz Pro Motion screens (previously a Pro-only feature). That allows for smoother scrolling and video. On the back of at least some of the new iPhones, we're expecting a large camera bump that spans horizontally across the phone – rather than just being stuck in the corner. IPHONE SCREEN SIZES – A JOURNEY THROUGH TIME Here's how iPhone screen sizes have changed over the years – as measured in inches diagonally from corner to corner... iPhone (2007) – 3.5 inches iPhone 3G (2008) – 3.5 inches iPhone 3GS (2009) – 3.5 inches iPhone 4 (2010) – 3.5 inches iPhone 4S (2011) – 3.5 inches iPhone 5 (2012) – 4 inches iPhone 5S (2013) – 4 inches iPhone 5C (2013) – 4 inches iPhone 6 (2014) – 4.7 inches iPhone 6+ (2014) – 5.5 inches iPhone 6S (2015) – 4.7 inches iPhone 6S+ (2015) – 5.5 inches iPhone SE (2016) – 4 inches iPhone 7 (2016) – 4.7 inches iPhone 7+ (2016) – 5.5 inches iPhone 8 (2017) – 4.7 inches iPhone 8+ (2017) – 5.5 inches iPhone X (2017) – 5.8 inches iPhone XS (2018) – 5.8 inches iPhone XR (2018) – 6.1 inches iPhone XS Max (2018) – 6.5 inches iPhone 11 (2019) – 6.1 inches iPhone 11 Pro (2019) – 5.8 inches iPhone 11 Pro Max (2019) – 6.5 inches iPhone SE 2nd gen (2020) – 4.7 inches iPhone 12 Mini (2020) – 5.4 inches iPhone 12 (2020) – 6.1 inches iPhone 12 Pro (2020) – 6.1 inches iPhone 12 Pro Max (2020) – 6.7 inches iPhone 13 Mini (2021) – 5.4 inches iPhone 13 (2021) – 6.1 inches iPhone 13 Pro (2021) – 6.1 inches iPhone 13 Pro Max (2021) – 6.7 inches iPhone SE 3rd gen (2022) – 4.7 inches iPhone 14 (2022) – 6.1 inches iPhone 14 Plus (2022) – 6.7 inches iPhone 14 Pro (2022) – 6.1 inches iPhone 14 Pro Max (2022) – 6.7 inches iPhone 15 (2023) – 6.1 inches iPhone 15 Plus (2023) – 6.7 inches iPhone 15 Pro (2023) – 6.1 inches iPhone 15 Pro Max (2023) – 6.7 inches iPhone 16 (2024) – 6.1 inches iPhone 16 Plus (2024) – 6.7 inches iPhone 16 Pro (2024) – 6.3 inches iPhone 16 Pro Max (2024) – 6.9 inches iPhone 16e (2025) – 6.1 inches We'll likely see some general camera quality improvements too. Apple is reportedly switching to aluminium casing for the Pro models, which means a move away from titanium. But that's about it in terms of major rumoured changes. Next year is rumoured to be a bigger year for Apple, with the potential debut of the first foldable iPhone. But we still don't have all the details for this year's iPhone launch, never mind next year's.

India's space odyssey: From ancient stargazers to lunar landings

BENGALURU: From ancient stargazers and astronomers to the invention of zero and grand architectural marvels aligned with celestial events, India's scientific temper was evident long before the space age began. Naturally, this spirit paved the way for advancements in rocketry and space exploration. After gaining Independence, precisely 78 years ago on August 15, 1947, India emerged onto the global scientific stage just as the Cold War began, and the USA and USSR embarked on a fierce Space Race. While the superpowers competed for supremacy, India took a different path, one rooted in harnessing space technology to address developmental challenges. That same year, Dr Vikram Sarabhai (1919-1971), hailed as the father of India's space programme, founded the Physical Research Laboratory (PRL) in Ahmedabad. He initially focused on cosmic ray and upper-atmosphere research, gradually expanding into broader space science. Sarabhai envisioned that space technology could aid national development, especially in weather forecasting, telecommunications, and resource management. India's space journey began in 1961 when Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru placed space research under the Department of Atomic Energy. A year later, the Indian National Committee for Space Research (INCOSPAR) was established under Dr. Homi J. Bhabha, with Vikram Sarabhai as chairman. Thumba in Kerala, near the magnetic equator, was chosen as the site for the Thumba Equatorial Rocket Launching Station (TERLS). A local church became the first control room. On November 21, 1963, India launched its first rocket, a Nike-Apache, with parts transported on bicycles. INCOSPAR evolved into the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) on August 15, 1969. In 1972, ISRO was brought under the newly formed Department of Space (DOS). India's first satellite, Aryabhata, was launched in 1975. In 1971, ISRO set up the Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC) in Sriharikota. India's first satellite launch vehicle, SLV-3, flew in 1979. The 1981 launch of the experimental satellite APPLE from French Guiana paved the way for the INSAT series, starting in 1982, supporting weather, telecom, and broadcasting services.

There's a brilliant trick for parents too APPY DAYS Unlock cheaper shopping bills and holidays with genius Apple 'AI tricks' that work on your iPhone, iPad and Mac APPLE fans can slash their shopping bills and find cheap holidays using their gadget's built-in AI tricks. It's perfect if you've got an iPhone, iPad or Mac computer lying around at home – just waiting for a free AI upgrade. Advertisement 13 Your Apple gadgets have some handy AI tricks that you might be missing out on Credit: Apple 13 You can create a fun emoji for your bedtime stories Credit: Sean Keach 13 Then you can generate an entire bedtime story based on your virtual character Credit: Sean Keach The Sun can reveal five clever tricks that work using Apple Intelligence, and they only take a few seconds each. The only note is that you'll need an Apple gadget that actually supports Apple Intelligence. That includes: iPhone 15 Pro iPhone 15 Pro Max iPhone 16 iPhone 16 Plus iPhone 16 Pro iPhone 16 Pro Max iPhone 16e iPad Pro (M1 and later) iPad Air (M1 and later) iPad mini (A17 Pro) MacBook Air/Pro (M1 and later) iMac/Mac Mini (M1 and later) Mac Studio (M1 Max and later) Mac Pro (M2 Ultra) Apple AI Trick #1 – BEDTIME STORIES Your iPhone can create bedtime stories for kids. It's a perfect parenting hack. Just go into Messages, bring up the keyboard, tap on Genmoji, then create a funny character. Advertisement Maybe it's a squirrel with a shovel or an elephant in a chef's hat. This will be your character. Now go into Notes, tap on Writing Tools, then choose Compose with ChatGPT, and ask for a short story about your elephant chef – and say they're going on an adventure. It'll create the story, which you can then illustrate by dropping the Genmoji at the top. Or you could even go into Apple's Image Playground app and make a full picture, then paste that in instead. Advertisement It's perfect for bedtime because you can have a different story every night. Apple interview with Greg Joz Joswiak on new artificial intelligence, screening, hold assist, carplay, liquid glass and ios updates Apple AI Trick #2 – HOLIDAY PLANNER Another easy trick is letting Apple's AI plan your holiday – or at least the itinerary. This one works on iPhone and iPad, but we tried it on Mac. Just double-click the Command button on your keyboard to bring up Siri. Advertisement Then type in your request, like asking for a three-day hiking trip in the Cotswolds. 13 You can type to Siri and ask for help with holiday planning Credit: Sean Keach 13 Siri can use ChatGPT to generate a holiday itinerary in seconds Credit: Sean Keach You could even ask for a budget-friendly holiday with cheap activities to save money. Advertisement Let Siri send your request to ChatGPT and it'll make a full itinerary that you can drop straight into a document. And you can even generate a fun AI pic to go with it too using Apple's Image Playground feature. Apple AI Trick #3 – SKETCH EXPERT I'm hopeless at drawing, but AI isn't. HOW DOES CHATGPT WORK ON IPHONE? Here's the official guidance from Apple... "Siri can tap into ChatGPT for certain requests, including questions about photos or documents," Apple explained. "And with Compose in Writing Tools, you can create and illustrate original content from scratch. "You control when ChatGPT is used and will be asked before any of your information is shared. Anyone can access ChatGPT for free, without creating an account. "ChatGPT subscribers can connect accounts to access paid features within these experiences." Picture Credit: Apple There's a clever trick that turns your own sketches into art – and it works using the Apple Pencil on an iPad. Advertisement Draw something rough in the Notes app – we sketched a terrarium – and then write what it is next to it. Now go into the Apple Pencil menu, choose the AI button, and circle your creation. And in just a few seconds, it'll transform what you've drawn into a proper sketch. You can even swipe through several options to find the perfect one. 13 Even a very average sketch can be transformed using Apple's AI Credit: Sean Keach Advertisement 13 You can convert your drawings into impressive pieces of art in the Notes app Credit: Sean Keach It's a nice way to illustrate your notes quickly. Another handy tip: if you draw a shape like a square, circle, or star, and leave the Apple Pencil tip pressed to the screen at the end, it'll neaten it up for you. So your rough circle will snap to become perfectly round in an instant. This also works with drawing arrows too. Advertisement Apple AI Trick #4 – PHOTO CLEAN-UP Fourth is Clean Up, which is built into Apple's default Photos app on your iPhone. 13 You can use Clean Up to remove almost any object from a scene Credit: Sean Keach It's a handy way to scrub unwanted objects from your pics. Maybe you've snapped Big Ben but there's a tourist in the way, or someone has photobombed your perfect selfie. Advertisement Just go into the photo, tap on the edit button, and then choose the Clean Up option. Then you can tap on, rub over, or circle the object that you want to delete. 13 If you spot something unwanted in your photo, just get rid of it virtually Credit: Sean Keach 13 Just circle, scrub or tap the object that you want to remove Credit: Sean Keach Advertisement 13 Clean Up will delete the object in seconds – replacing it with background Credit: Sean Keach Give it a few seconds and it should vanish from view, replaced by what the AI thinks should've been in the spot. If it doesn't work perfectly on the first go, you can give it a few more passes with Clean Up to get it right. And you can always revert back to the original image at any time if you don't like the edited version. Advertisement Apple AI Trick #5 – SHOPPING HACK Lastly, there's a handy trick called Visual Intelligence that's great for shopping. First, you'll want to load it up. One way is to go into Settings > Action Button and set it to activate from your Action Button. Or if you have an iPhone with a Camera Control button, you can just hold that down instead. Advertisement Now snap a pic of an object. We tried it on a Labubu, which is a massively popular collectible toy. 13 You can scan almost anything using Visual Intelligence – and then see if Google can find it online Credit: Sean Keach 13 You can find the cheapest prices or lookalike alternatives for loads of products, including clothes and furniture Credit: Sean Keach But it also works just fine on clothes or furniture that you like too. Advertisement The AI will identify what it's seeing, and then show you a load of places that you can buy it online. You can then find the best price for the exact item you're looking at. And it'll usually also surface similar-looking items if you snap clothes or furniture, so it's a clever way to find cheap 'dupes' of expensive items that you like.

Then you can tap on, rub over, or circle the object that you want to delete. 13 If you spot something unwanted in your photo, just get rid of it virtually Credit: Sean Keach 13 Just circle, scrub or tap the object that you want to remove Credit: Sean Keach 13 Clean Up will delete the object in seconds – replacing it with background Credit: Sean Keach Give it a few seconds and it should vanish from view, replaced by what the AI thinks should've been in the spot. If it doesn't work perfectly on the first go, you can give it a few more passes with Clean Up to get it right. And you can always revert back to the original image at any time if you don't like the edited version. Apple AI Trick #5 – SHOPPING HACK Lastly, there's a handy trick called Visual Intelligence that's great for shopping. First, you'll want to load it up. One way is to go into Settings > Action Button and set it to activate from your Action Button. Or if you have an iPhone with a Camera Control button, you can just hold that down instead. Now snap a pic of an object. The AI will identify what it's seeing, and then show you a load of places that you can buy it online. You can then find the best price for the exact item you're looking at. And it'll usually also surface similar-looking items if you snap clothes or furniture, so it's a clever way to find cheap 'dupes' of expensive items that you like.
