UAE carriers suspend, reroute flights after Israel strikes Iran

UAE airlines have suspended and rerouted a number of flights to Tel Aviv and Tehran on Friday due to the temporary closure of airspace over Iran and Israel. Tel Aviv's Ben Gurion Airport and Iranian airspace have been closed until further notice after Israel launched attacks on Iran's nuclear facilities, ballistic missile factories and military on Friday. In a statement sent to ARN News, a flydubai spokesperson confirmed its services have been impacted. "Flights to Amman, Beirut, Damascus, Iran and Israel have been suspended and a number of flights have been cancelled, rerouted or have returned to their destination of origin," the spokesperson added. Abu Dhabi-based Etihad Airways said it has cancelled "select services to and from Tel Aviv on Friday, June 13, in response to ongoing regional developments". Four flights to and from Tel Aviv and Abu Dhabi stand delayed and two have been cancelled. In a statement sent to ARN News, Emirates Airline said it has cancelled flights from Dubai to and from Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon and Iran. Those "connecting through Dubai with final their destination in Iraq, Iran, Jordan and Lebanon will not be accepted for travel at their point of origin until further notice," the airline added. Emirates Airline suspended operations to Tel Aviv since October 2023. The UAE carriers are "monitoring the situation in the region closely and adjusting flight schedules accordingly", with "safety of our passengers and crew... our top priority". Passengers have been advised to check with their airlines or booking agents for regular updates. Iraq early on Friday closed its airspace and suspended all traffic at its airports, Iraqi state media reported. Jordan, which sits between Israel and Iraq, closed its airspace several hours after the Israeli campaign began. Meanwhile, Air India, which overflies Iran for its Europe and North American flights, said several flights were being diverted or returned to their origin, including ones from New York, Vancouver, Chicago and London.

Temperatures in UAE set to drop after days of record heat

Temperatures in the UAE will begin to drop over the next five days, the National Centre of Meteorology (NCM) said, after the country marked a heat record for the month of May. According to NCM, the country recorded 51.6 degree Celsius in some parts over the weekend, marking the highest temperature for May in 22 years. Speaking to ARN News, Esra Al Naqpi, NCM weather forecaster, said it's usually in June and July that the country records highs of 50 degree Celsius, and not in May. She explained that the unusual rise in temperature is driven by "southerly winds" and a "warm air mass over the country". Al Naqbi said the temperatures will drop over the coming days, with no forecast for rain.

UAE-Pakistan flights face disruptions for second day

UAE airlines have cancelled some flights to Pakistan on Thursday after the country shut down operations at its major airports, including Karachi, Lahore and Sialkot. It comes a day after flight services to Pakistan were impacted after India hit multiple targets in Pakistan linked to the tourist killings in Jammu and Kashmir. In a statement sent to ARN News, Etihad Airways said flights between Abu Dhabi and Lahore, which were rescheduled to take-off a day after Wednesday's disruptions, have been cancelled. "Etihad Airways flights EY288 and EY289 between Abu Dhabi Zayed International Airport (AUH) and Lahore Allama Iqbal International Airport (LHE), which were originally scheduled to depart on 07 May and subsequently delayed, have now been cancelled due to the ongoing closure of Pakistani airspace," the airline said in its statement. The airline said it will continue to monitor the "evolving situation" and warned travellers of "further changes or disruption" to its Pakistan services. Emirates said it is suspending all flights to Pakistan's Lahore, Islamabad, Sialkot, Peshawar and Karachi until May 10. In an update on its official website, the airline said it's "due to the ongoing uncertainly surrounding access to the country's airspace and airports". The Dubai carrier said travellers "booked on connecting flights to Pakistan will not be accepted to travel until further notice". Dubai low-cost carrier, flydubai, also confirmed "temporary suspension of flights between Dubai and Karachi" on Thursday. In a statement, the airline said flights to and from Islamabad and Lahore have also been cancelled. "Flights FZ 354 from Islamabad International Airport (ISB), FZ 360 from Lahore International Airport (LHE) and FZ 338 from Sialkot Airport (SKT) on 08 May were cancelled," a spokesperson for the airline said. Meanwhile, flydubai services to Faisalabad, Multan, Quetta and Sialkot remain unaffected.
