ISI could have promoted insurgency in Northeast in absence of peace pacts with rebel groups: Tipra Motha founder Pradyot Kishore
Tipra Motha founder Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma Friday said the peace accord between the Centre, the state government and Tripura-based insurgent outfits – National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) and All Tripura Tiger Force (ATTF) – was signed at the right time last year. Pradyot Kishore reasoned that in the absence of the peace accord, Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) could have created more trouble in the region in the wake of the fall of the Sheikh Hasina-led government in Bangladesh on August 5 last year. Over 328 armed insurgents surrendered after the signing of the peace accord in New Delhi. Apart from government officials and representatives of the rebel groups, Pradyot Kishore was also present during the signing of the accord. On Friday, Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha said the Centre has announced Rs 250 crore to aid the transition of surrendering rebels as per the Memorandum of Settlement (MOS) with the two rebel outfits. CM Saha further said that the peace accord has led to the socio-economic improvement of marginalised groups, boosted employment opportunities and increased tourist inflow in the state, among others. The Union government has signed several peace agreements with rebel groups in the Northeast in recent years. In 2020, it signed the Bodo Accord, followed by the Karbi Peace Accord in 2021, and the peace pact with the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) in 2023, among others. Although militancy in Tripura dates back to 1967, when a small outfit called Sengkrak took up arms, the height of insurgency came in the late 1980s, when a series of insurgent groups, including the NLFT and the ATTF, became active. While most of these militant groups have largely become defunct, a small faction of the NLFT is said to be active in Bangladesh.

MUSCAT, AUGUST 1 The Oman Table Tennis Association (OTTA) is gearing up to host the 36th edition of the Arab Table Tennis Club Championship in Muscat staring from August 30 to September 4. The prestigious tournament will take place at the main hall of Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex in Bausher and is expected to witness the participation of elite table tennis clubs from across the Arab countries. This highly anticipated event comes eight years after Oman's successful hosting of the Arab Table Tennis Championship for national teams in 2017 and reflects OTTA's growing reputation as a reliable and experienced organiser of regional and international table tennis events. The tournament is held under the umbrella of the Arab Table Tennis Federation (ATTF) and features some of the top-ranked clubs in the region. The ATTF has officially invited all its member federations and associations to nominate their top clubs to participate in the tournament. Each country may send up to three clubs in the men's and three in the women's categories. Representing Oman in this championship will be Salalah Club, Ibri Club and Seeb Club, who earned their spots by finishing as the top three teams in last season's national league competition. According to the ATTF, the deadline for club registrations is August 15 and participating teams will be permitted to include one foreign professional player provided they meet specific criteria, including the submission of an international transfer certificate and an official registration letter from the club. All matches will adhere to the regulations set by the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF). The tournament will be contested under the modern Cup Swiss format, which ensure competitive matchups and fair opportunities for all teams. Prizes will be awarded to the top three teams in both the men's and women's categories, including trophies, medals and certificates of recognition. The officiating team will include international referees, led by Zaki Khalid from Egypt as the chief referee and Hashim al Salmi from Oman as his assistant, alongside other top-ranked Arab and Omani referees. Our organising committee is working diligently to finalise logistical, venue and technical arrangements'. 'Beyond competition, the event aims to promote and expand the popularity of table tennis across the Arab world and elevate its competitive standards', Al Jassasi added.

Motha MLA writes to HM Shah, urges to enforce ILP in Tripura
1 2 Agartala: In a decisive move to safeguard the interests of indigenous communities in Tripura's 6th Schedule areas, Tipra Motha MLA Ranjit Debbarma on Thursday wrote to Union home minister Amit Shah to enforce Inner Line Permit (ILP) in the state. This demand comes on the heels of a nationwide assurance for a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) to identify and deport illegal immigrants. Debbarma's push for ILP is significant, given the ruling BJP's opposition to the measure, despite Tipra Motha being a junior partner in the govt. He highlighted the escalating threat of illegal migration and its implications for national security, referencing the 1993 'Memorandum of Settlement' between the Govt of Tripura and the All Tripura Tribal Force (ATTF), which advocated for ILP under Clause 2(e). As a former ATTF leader turned lawmaker, Debbarma expressed frustration over the 32-year delay in implementing ILP in Tripura, contrasting it with northeastern states like Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, Nagaland, and Manipur, where ILP is already in place. In a separate letter, Debbarma warned of the severe national security threat posed by unchecked illegal migration, urging immediate action. He emphasised Tripura's vulnerability due to its 856km border with Bangladesh and called for coordinated efforts from the state and central govts. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like BITS Pilani Digital bitspilani Subscribe Undo Debbarma also cited a 2012 incident where 1.48 lakh illegal voters were identified in Tripura, yet no electoral roll corrections were made. He accused corrupt officials, local brokers, and political leaders of facilitating illegal immigrants in obtaining Indian identification documents. The letter, also sent to the governor and chief minister, underscores the urgent need for ILP to maintain internal security in the state and across India.

Tripura party seeks answers on Motha MLA's ‘violent past' from Shah
Agartala: Amra Bangali, a regional political party, has called upon Union home minister to address pressing concerns regarding TIPRA Motha MLA Ranjit Debbarma accused of committing genocide during his tenure as the chief of the banned armed outfit All Tripura Tiger Force (ATTF). Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Amra Bangali state secretary Gouranga Rudrapal has raised serious allegations against Debbarma, claiming that he has not formally renounced his past affiliations before contesting the 2023 assembly elections under the banner of royal scion Pradyot Kishore Debbarman's party, TIPRA Motha. Rudrapal says police records show Debbarma has not surrendered, with multiple cases still pending against him, including accusations of murdering over a hundred Bengalis during the 1990s. The party has also taken a firm stance against TIPRA Motha's demand to repatriate individuals who arrived in Tripura post-March 25, 1971, from Bangladesh. They are urging the govt to reopen investigations into the alleged genocides by ATTF and NLFT during the 1980s and 1990s. Rudrapal did not hold back in his criticism of Debbarma, accusing him of inciting communal tensions with hate speech against Hindu Bengalis. "It is alarming that someone with such a violent past can now hold a position of power as an MLA," he stated, demanding clarity on how an insurgent could transition into a lawmaker. Amra Bangali is also pushing for a judicial reinvestigation into the June 1980 riots and other violent incidents targeting Bengalis over the past three decades. They argue that justice has been denied to the victims of ethnic violence due to political negligence. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now "The 1980 riots led to the massacre of hundreds of innocent Bengalis. Even after four decades, no proper investigation or justice has been delivered. Similarly, several acts of mass violence, property lootings, and targeted killings of Bengalis have taken place in the last 45 years, often by extremist groups. The victims were either forgotten or silenced," Rudrapal lamented. He called for the establishment of a judicial commission, led by a sitting HC judge, to thoroughly investigate these incidents and ensure proper compensation and rehabilitation for the victims' families. Rudrapal further emphasized the historical roots of Bengalis in the region, contrasting them with the migration of tribal communities from present-day Myanmar around the 5th century BC. "Bengalis are the real sons of the soil but today, they are being labelled as outsiders in their land," he said. Reacting to the allegations, Debbarma said, "History tells who are infiltrators. I just referred to the notification of MHA regarding identification of illegal migrants. In regard to the allegation of my past, I can only say there were 17 cases against me but none of them were proved in court."
