Suddenly hot White Sox aim to continue streak in Tampa

(Photo credit: Charles LeClaire-Imagn Images) The Chicago White Sox can do something Monday that they have not achieved in more than a year when they travel to play the Tampa Bay Rays. Chicago comes out of the All-Star break having recorded its first sweep of the season, taking three games on the road against the Pittsburgh Pirates in dominating fashion. Capped by Sunday's 7-2 victory, the White Sox outscored their hosts 27-7 over the weekend to record the team's first road sweep in more than three years. Sunday's starting pitcher Aaron Civale said the four-day break last week benefited the team. 'It's hard to get away from this game for one day, so for a lot of guys, it's a good reset,' said Civale, who earned his first victory with the club on Sunday. The righty allowed only one unearned run across six innings and struck out a season-high six against just three hits and a walk. Miguel Vargas was one of the hitting stars for the White Sox over the weekend. The infielder went 4-for-13 in the three games, with two doubles Saturday and a double and three-run homer on Sunday. He scored five times in the sweep. Rookie Sean Burke (4-8, 4.36 ERA) will try to give the White Sox their first four-game winning streak since May 2024. The 25-year-old faces the Rays for the first time. He's coming off a no-decision against the Cleveland Guardians on July 12, when he gave up two runs on three hits and a pair of walks over five innings while notching five strikeouts. Chicago's sweep will not turn the tide on this season as the team (35-65) is 30 games under .500 through the first 100 contests. Still, it shows the White Sox have improved from last season's franchise-worst 41-121 campaign. The Rays saw their hopes for a series sweep dashed on Sunday when the visiting Baltimore Orioles beat them 5-3. All-Star Junior Caminero struck out with the bases loaded to end Sunday's game, but he was electric during the rest of the series. He went 6-for-14 with two homers and five RBIs. Yandy Diaz finished 6-for-10 with a homer, four RBIs and five runs scored. Tampa starter Shane Baz (8-5, 4.17) will see the White Sox for the first time in his career. The right-hander, 26, has lost two straight starts but pitched well in both. In his last start, he gave up the only run in a 1-0 road loss to the Boston Red Sox on July 12. The Red Sox, who were in the middle of a 10-game winning streak, managed only five hits and two walks in 6 1/3 innings versus Baz, who struck out three. At 52-48, the Rays are in fourth place in the American League East and 6 1/2 games back of division-leading Toronto Blue Jays. However, they trail the Red Sox and Seattle Mariners by only 1 1/2 games for the last two AL wild-card spots. While Rays starter Ryan Pepiot gave up all five runs in the loss Sunday and was disappointed he could not pitch the Rays to a sweep, he told the Tampa Bay Times that the team enjoyed a good weekend. 'We still won the series,' he said. 'If you win every single series, at the end of the season, you're going to be in pretty good shape.'

Vargas and Tauchman lead White Sox over Pirates 7-2 for 1st series sweep of season

Miguel Vargas and Mike Tauchman hit back-to-back homers in a four-run first inning, and the Chicago White Sox cruised to a 7-2 victory over the struggling Pittsburgh Pirates on Sunday for their first series sweep this season. Vargas hit a three-run shot to open the scoring against Andrew Heaney, his 11th homer of the year, but first since June 15. Tauchman followed by launching a drive that carried over the right-field stands and bounced into the Allegheny River. The White Sox became the last major league team to sweep a series this season as they sent the Pirates to their 11th loss in 12 games. Tauchman hit a two-run double in the fifth to chase Heaney and extend the lead to 7-1. Aaron Civale (2-6) got his first win in seven starts since being acquired from Milwaukee in a June 13 trade. He gave up one unearned run and three hits in six innings with six strikeouts. Vargas, Tauchman, Chase Meidroth and Michael A. Taylor each had two hits for the White Sox. Heaney (4-9) was tagged for seven runs and nine hits in four innings. The left-hander has lost six of seven decisions since May 26. Vargas' home run to center field put the White Sox on the path to a three-game sweep. Andrew McCutchen's ninth-inning double for Pittsburgh was his 2,232nd hit, tying Pirates great Willie Stargell for 180th on the MLB career list. The White Sox open a three-game series against the Tampa Bay Rays on Monday night in Tampa, with Sean Burke (4-8, 4.36 ERA) pitching for Chicago against fellow right-hander Shane Baz (8-5, 4.17). National League All-Star Game starter Paul Skenes (4-8, 2.01 ERA) goes for the Pirates on Monday night to begin a three-game series with visiting Detroit and Jack Flaherty (5-9, 4.65). ___ AP MLB:

White Sox go for elusive series sweep in Pittsburgh

July 20 - The Chicago White Sox are the only team in the majors yet to sweep a series this season. They'll try to change that on Sunday afternoon when they take on the host Pittsburgh Pirates in the finale of a three-game series. In an otherwise difficult season in terms of wins and losses, the White Sox have opened the second half strong, scoring 10 runs in each of their first two victories over Pittsburgh. But Chicago was hit with a setback on the injury front this week as All-Star right-handed rookie starting pitcher Shane Smith landed on the 15-day injured list with a left ankle sprain retroactive to Wednesday. "Rolled his ankle running. It's his lead leg, his plant leg, which for him is his left leg," White Sox manager Will Venable said on Saturday. "It puts him in a tough spot to be able to make his start. But, hopefully, it's the short version here." This development puts the onus on recently acquired starters such as right-hander Aaron Civale (1-6, 5.30 ERA) to keep Chicago's rotation strong as the team strives positive results amid an ongoing rebuild. Civale, who was traded from Milwaukee on June 13, will attempt to pick up his first victory in a White Sox uniform when he opposes Pirates lefty Andrew Heaney (4-8, 4.59) on Sunday. Civale is 0-4 with a 5.58 ERA in six starts since joining Chicago. He gave up four runs on three hits and two walks while striking out three over 5 2/3 innings in his most recent outing at home against Cleveland on July 13. Civale is 2-2 with a 3.40 ERA in 39 2/3 innings over seven career starts against the Pirates. The White Sox recalled reliever Wikelman Gonzalez from Triple-A Charlotte on Saturday. They also activated infielder/outfielder Brooks Baldwin, who appeared in Saturday's game, from the IL and optioned Will Robertson to Charlotte. Heaney will try to reverse his and his team's recent results when he takes the mound for the first time since July 12 at Minnesota, when he appeared out of the bullpen in what turned out to be a 12-4 loss. Heaney gave up three runs -- all on home runs -- over two innings and finished with one walk and no strikeouts. Heaney's most recent start was his shortest of the season as he lasted only three innings and gave up four runs on six hits and a walk while striking out two in taking a 9-3 loss at Kansas City on July 7. Heaney is 5-1 with a 4.31 ERA in 56 1/3 innings over 10 career starts against the White Sox, however, and will try to snap a two-game skid for the Pirates, who are in the midst of one of their worst stretches of the season with 10 losses in their past 11 games. The first two losses against Chicago marked the first time this season that Pittsburgh lost back-to-back games while allowing 10 runs. "It's hard, and it's something we haven't dealt with. The pitching has been so good," Pirates manager Don Kelly said. "It's tough whenever you lose a game that you're ahead and you have to turn it over to the bullpen who has been so reliable all year. They're going to continue to be reliable. Those guys in the back end have done a great job, and I have full confidence in them to do that." --Field Level Media
