Why was Suits LA canceled? NBC exec weighs in on the surprising decision
No expert could've predicted Suits would become 2023's most-streamed TV show in the U.S. NBC commissioning a spinoff series, Suits LA, seemed like a slam dunk. Unfortunately for fans of the legal drama, it will be one-and-done for the spinoff as NBC canceled Suits LA. The decision to end Suits LA after one season comes ahead of the season finale on May 18. NBC hoped to capitalize on Suits' newfound popularity. However, the spinoff was negatively reviewed and failed to sustain impactful TV ratings. Recommended Videos Jeff Bader, NBC's president of programming strategy, spoke about the surprising decision to cancel Suits LA over the weekend. 'It's so hard to talk about shows and which ones you bring back,' Bader said on a conference call (via Deadline). 'Suits [LA] has had a very short run, but it really just has not resonated the way we thought it would. There can be many, many reasons — people are speculating why it hasn't resonated, but it's just not really showing the potential to grow for us in the future, unfortunately.' Suits LA was not the only NBC casualty. The network canceled Lopez vs. Lopez, Found, Night Court, and The Irrational. Bader said his team looks at the performance of the shows on 'linear and on digital' and sees which ones are 'growing.' 'We had to make some hard decisions,' Bader said. Developed by Suits creator Aaron Korsh, Suits LA starred Stephen Amell, a former New York prosecutor who moves to Los Angeles to start a firm specializing in entertainment law. The ensemble featured Lex Scott Davis as Erica Rollins, Josh McDermitt as Stuart Lane, and Bryan Greenberg as Rick Dodsen. Several notable characters from the flagship show appeared on the spinoff, including Gabriel Macht as Harvey Specter and Rick Hoffman as Louis Litt. Suits aired for nine seasons on USA Network from 2011 to 2019. Per Nielsen, Suits registered 57.7 billion total minutes watched in 2023, the highest annual viewing time ever. Suits LA will air its series finale on NBC at 9 p.m. ET/PT on May 18. Stream all available episodes on Peacock.

Why was Suits LA cancelled after one season? Here's what the makers said
There were a lot of expectations that were riding on the spin-off of Suits, Suits LA, but it seems like the show has not been able to garner a good response. NBC also pulled a plug on the show after one season. In an interview with Variety, the makers have opened up about the reasons for not going ahead for a second season. (Also read: Suits LA First Reactions: Fans irritated as spin-off falls flat; say it 'feels like a TikTok parody of the original') Jeff Bader, who is the president, program planning strategy, of NBC Universal Entertainment, told Variety, 'It's so hard to talk about shows and which ones you bring back, and Suits had a very short run, but it really just has not resonated the way we thought it would. There can be many, many reasons why, people are speculating why it hasn't resonated, but it's just not really showing the potential to grow for us in the future, unfortunately." He went on to add, 'And it's those decisions we had to make. We had to look at the performance of the shows, both on linear and on digital. We had to see the ones that looked like they had growth potential in the future. So we're looking at how stable they are on their linear performance, how stable they are on digital, which ones are growing and which ones are declining. And we had to make some hard decisions.' Suits LA was an American legal drama television series created by Aaron Korsh for NBC. It is the second spin-off of Suits, starring Stephen Amell as Ted Black, Josh McDermitt as Stuart Lane, Lex Scott Davis as Erica Rollins, and Bryan Greenberg as Rick Dodsen. There was a lot of hype surrounding the return of Gabriel Macht, who reprised his role as Harvey Specter. However, the show did not receive favourable reviews upon release.

NBC just canceled this highly anticipated 'Suits' spin-off series after one season
Aaron Korsh's legal drama "Suits" had a solid eight-year run on cable, but its explosive resurgence into the pop culture sphere after Netflix added it in 2023 is a comeback for the history books. Unfortunately, its spin-off, "Suits LA," isn't following in its footsteps. NBC is shutting the doors on "Suits LA's" West Coast office after just one season, Variety reported this week. This expansion of the "Suits" universe led by Stephen Amell premiered in February with plenty of buzz. The series follows a new cast of characters building an LA law firm focused on criminal and entertainment law. Several original 'Suits' cast members have made appearances, including Gabriel Macht, Rick Hoffman, and David Costabile. We even called it one of our most anticipated shows of the year. But NBC wasn't quite able to capture the same binge-worthy mix of legal chatter, character-driven drama, and stories worth caring about that made the USA Network original such a hit. "Suits LA" came off as a low-budget imitation of a finely crafted original, earning a 39% critics' score on Rotten Tomatoes. (The original 9 seasons of "Suits" rank between 78% and 100%.) The ratings reflected that drop-off in quality as well. According to TVLine, "Suits LA" has averaged just 2.35 million total viewers. Out of the 11 dramas NBC aired this TV season, it only beat out fellow freshman "Grosse Pointe Garden Society" in terms of viewership. Now it seems NBC has read the writing on the wall and realized "Suits LA" isn't the smash hit the studio thought it had on its hands. When the "Suits LA" season finale airs on May 18, it'll be the last hurrah for the "Suits" universe. For now, at any rate. NBC or another network could always revive the IP somewhere down the line. "Suits LA" is one of five shows NBC is pulling the plug on, joining the ranks of "Lopez vs. Lopez," "Night Court," "Found" and "The Irrational." That list could grow, though, as the fates of other under-performing series like "The Hunting Party" and "Grosse Pointe Garden Society" remain up in the air. Suits LA canceled after a single season at NBC
Although Suits became something of a phenomenon when it first hit Netflix, it seems Suits LA was unable to capture that same magic. According to reporting in Entertainment Weekly, the show has been canceled ahead of its first season finale on NBC. The season finale will still air as planned but will be the show's last episode. While it shared the same name as the original show, Suits LA was set in Los Angeles instead of New York and followed a largely new cast that was led by Stephen Amell. A few familiar faces popped up over the course of the run, but the show didn't have the same hooky premise as the original and also emphasized a slightly edgier tone. Recommended Videos The original series first debuted on USA in 2011 and followed a legal shark who takes on an up-and-coming attorney who is not who he appears to be. The show gained a new audience in 2023 when it first hit Netflix, perhaps in part because the show starred Meghan Markle, who eventually became part of the British Royal Family. That rekindled interest in the original series was a huge part of the impetus for the creation of this spin-off series. Perhaps because of its limited connection to the original show, though, it wasn't able to grab the same audience. Series creator Aaron Korsh previously told Entertainment Weekly that he would be interested in a spin-off movie featuring the original cast, though, so we might not be done with Suits just yet. 'I was very satisfied with the way Suits ended, and at some point we might do a Suits movie and that could be fun,' Korsh said. 'It's more in the hypothetical or theoretical stages, so I wouldn't have many answers for you [now]. But it's not an insane notion for us to someday do that.'

Suits LA Season 2 cancelled after poor reviews: Report
NBC has cancelled the new season of 'Suits LA', a spin-off of the popular 'Suits' series which gained newfound popularity on Netflix three years after its original run on TV. As per a report in Variety, the decision has been made because of the poor reviews and the low ratings that the Stephen Amell-led series received upon its premiere in February this LA' has been cancelled at NBC after just one season, Variety has learned," the report mentioned, adding that the show failed to match the 'hype' of its parent show, making "only a small dent in the ratings and drawing mostly negative reviews upon its debut."The series features Amell playing Ted Black, a former federal prosecutor-turned-big-shot entertainment attorney in Los Angeles. He has to deal with an immediate crisis at hand, and embrace a new role. A lot of the story also unravels in the flashbacks from the past, which focus more on establishing the kind of man Black was, his relationships, and cases that shaped the kind of lawyer that he has become today. Aaron Korsh, the creator of the 'Suits' world, tried to make 'Suits LA' look more intriguing by adding more exciting appearances by Gabriel Macht (Harvey Spector) and Rick Hoffman (Louis Litt) from the 'Suits' Today has been regularly reviewing a new episode of 'Suits LA' every Monday. While the series has had its high points, it has more misses than hits, and it's already over 10 a review titled 'Legal drama turns legal mess - case of identity crisis', we explained how the show has been 'losing the plot fast.' A part of the review read, "Creator Aaron Korsh has got the structure right, but there's no concrete inside. The new 'Suits' series is not able to establish a permanent conflict that makes it capable of making the audience sit up and take notice, leaving them asking for more, or at least making the wait for the next episode difficult. The romance is not romancing, and the mystery is not thrilling enough."The cancellation of 'Suits LA' joins other titles by the channel that have been axed after their first season - 'The Irrational', 'Found', 'Night Court' and 'Lopez vs Lopez'.
