Disability advocate wants taxes removed for virtual services

Abigail Murphy has been trying to update the tax code to help people with disabilities avoid paying taxes for virtual services. Currently, taxes are exempt on services accessed in person, but that doesn't apply to virtual services, which are often easier to access. Murphy's previous petition was dissolved before getting a chance to be heard. She spoke to CBC K-W's Aastha Shetty about the efforts to give the petition another go.

This Cambridge woman is walking 99 laps for her 99th birthday

Joan Thomlinson will be turning 99 years old soon and there's only one thing she wants for her birthday: to raise money for charity. She spoke to CBC K-W's Aastha Shetty about her plan to walk 99 laps at the Seasons Retirement Community walking track in Cambridge. Thomlinson is hoping it will help her raise at least $3,099 for the Ronald McDonald House Charities, a non-profit that provides families with a place to stay close to where their sick child accesses medical care.

'It's brutal': Residents of Kitchener encampment react to region's intention to clear them out

The encampment at the corner of Victoria and Weber Streets in downtown Kitchener is home to some people who have lived there for multiple years. They say they were surprised when several dumpsters arrived on site one day in mid-April, accompanied by a notice of a proposed bylaw to clear the tents before the end of the year. The region says they need the property to accommodate construction of a a transit hub. Some local advocates have pushed back against the decision and they're asking the region to handle the eviction differently. CBC K-W's Aastha Shetty went to the encampment to speak to the residents directly impacted.
