The Union government on Tuesday approved a major investment worth over Rs 8,000 crore in Arunachal Pradesh, giving a major boost to the state's power and infrastructure sector. The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, sanctioned the construction of the 700 MW Tato-II Hydro-Electric Project in the Shi Yomi district. Under the agreement, Arunachal Pradesh will receive 12% free power and an additional 1% for the Local Area Development Fund (LADF). With an installed capacity of 700 MW (4 x 175 MW), the hydro project is expected to generate 2,738.06 million units of energy, which will help in strengthening the electricity supply in the state and also help balance the national grid. The project will be implemented through a joint venture between North Eastern Electric Power Corporation Ltd (NEEPCO) and the Government of Arunachal Pradesh. The Centre will provide Rs 458.79 crore as budgetary support for the construction of roads, bridges and an associated transmission line under enabling infrastructure, along with Central Financial Assistance of Rs 436.13 crore towards the state's equity share. The statement added that the project would bring 'significant infrastructure improvement and socio-economic development of the region.' Infrastructure upgrades will include around 32.88 kilometres of new roads and bridges, which will largely be available for local use. The district will also see the development of essential facilities such as hospitals, schools, marketplaces and playgrounds, financed from dedicated project funds of Rs 20 crore. New Delhi: The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs ( CCEA ) on Tuesday approved an investment of ₹8,146.21 crore for the construction of 700 megawatt (MW) Tato-II Hydro Electric Project in Shi Yomi district of Arunachal Pradesh , with an estimated completion period of 72 months. The Centre will provide ₹458.79 crore as Budgetary support for the construction of roads, bridges and associated transmission lines under enabling infrastructure, and ₹436.13 crore as central financial assistance towards the state's equity share. The project, with an installed capacity of four units of 175 MW each, will produce 2,738.06 million units (MU) of energy annually. The power generated will improve electricity supply in Arunachal Pradesh and help in balancing the national grid. The project will be implemented through a joint venture between North Eastern Electric Power Corporation (NEEPCO) and the Arunachal Pradesh government. Arunachal Pradesh will receive 12 per cent free power from the project and another one per cent towards the Local Area Development Fund. The initiative will involve the development of about 32.88 kilometres of roads and bridges, which will largely be available for local use. Essential infrastructure such as hospitals, schools, marketplaces and playgrounds will also be developed with a dedicated project fund of ₹20 crore. The project is expected to generate direct and indirect employment opportunities and extend benefits to local suppliers, enterprises and MSMEs. Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led Cabinet on Tuesday approved an Investment Proposal for the construction of 700 MW Tato-II Hydro Electric Project in Shi Yomi District of Arunachal Pradesh with an outlay of Rs 8146.21 crore. The project will be completed in six years. This comes amid the recent development of China going ahead with its mega dam project on the Brahmaputra River. Tato-II Hydro Electric Project According to the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), the project with an installed capacity of 700 MW (4 x 175 MW) would produce 2738.06 MU of energy. 'The Power generated from the Project will help improve the power supply position in the state of Arunachal Pradesh and will also help in balancing the national Grid. The Project will be implemented through a Joint Venture Co. between North Eastern Electric Power Corporation Ltd. (NEEPCO) and the Government of Arunachal Pradesh,' said the CCEA. Funding Details The Government of India will extend Rs 458.79 crore as budgetary support for the construction of roads, bridges and associated transmission line under enabling infrastructure, besides Central Financial Assistance of Rs 436.13 crore towards equity share of the State. 'The state would benefit from 12% free power and another 1% towards Local Area Development Fund (LADF), besides significant infrastructure improvement and socio-economic development of the region,' said the CCEA. It further said that the Project is in line with the aims and objectives of Aatmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyan, would provide various benefits to local suppliers/enterprises/MSMEs, including direct and indirect employment opportunities. Infra Boost According to the Central government, there will be a significant improvement in infrastructure, including the development of around 32.88 kilometres of roads and bridges, for the project, which shall be mostly available for local use. The district will also benefit from the construction of essential infrastructure such as hospitals, schools, marketplaces, playgrounds, etc., to be financed from dedicated project funds of Rs 20 crore. Local populace shall also benefit from many sorts of compensations, employment and CSR activities.
