Kajol was ‘not sure' about doing Baazigar with Shah Rukh Khan, father convinced her to work with Abbas-Mustan: ‘What is this film, what am I doing in it?'
Kajol, who has been part of the film industry for over three decades, has several acclaimed films to her credit, including Abbas-Mustan's 1993 crime thriller Baazigar, co-starring Shah Rukh Khan. However, in a recent interview, the actor revealed that she was initially hesitant to sign the film. It was her father, Shomu Mukherji, who convinced her to take the role and encouraged her to work with 'good directors.' Kajol also shared how her father played a significant role in shaping her career and guiding her film choices. During the conversation with Filmfare, Kajol said, 'My dad actually warned me. He said, 'You better be sure what you want to do, because once you put that makeup on, its not going to come off.' I was like 16 at that time and said, 'What nonsense! I am an educated girl, I am a today's woman. If I choose to leave the films I will leave the films and I will show you. There's no one who can keep me from doing what I want to do.' The actor further recalled that it was her father who convinced her to do Baazigar. 'He was also a very practical person, very much in the flow of the industry. He was also the person who told me that I must do Baazigar. Because I was not sure whether I should do Baazigar or not. I was like, 'I was really not sure about it. What is this film? What am I doing in the film?' He was like no you must do it as these are good directors, I know Abbas-Mustan. That was one film that he told me that I really must do it,' she added. Do you know Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol starrer Baazigar had different climax? Abbas-Mustan spill the beans
Baazigar is one of the most iconic action thrillers produced in Hindi cinema. The 1993 film not only launched Shah Rukh Khan into the mainstream cinema but went on to give him the much-needed acclaim for his terrific portrayal of antagonist in the film. Directed by Abbas-Mustan, the movie also starred Kajol and Shilpa Shetty. But did you know that Baazigar had a different ending? Abbas-Mustan, the director duo, recently spilled the beans about the different climax they had in mind for the SRK starrer. Abbas-Mustan had a different ending planned for Baazigar In a recent podcast with YouTuber Lucky Bisht, the duo shared a shocking detail about how they had initially planned a different climax for Baazigar. They revealed that in the first draft, SRK's character, Ajay/Vicky, was initially conceived as an out-and-out negative character with a tough childhood. In the first version, his father was a drunkard, and he aspired to become extremely rich. SRK's character then decides to get into a relationship with Madan Chopra's daughters while killing one of them, Seema Chopra. However, to everyone's surprise, originally, the directors wanted Kajol as Priya Chopra, to kill Shah Rukh Khan's character after learning about his intention of taking over her father's empire. The ending was eventually scrapped off and a new draft was put in place. In the final version, SRK's character was killed by Madan Chopra with a rod. Abbas-Mustan didn't think Kajol's character killing SRK would have worked In the same podcast, Abbas-Mustan spoke about why they decided to rewrite the script of Baazigar. The director duo shared that the 1993 film wouldn't have worked without heart and emotions. They rewrote the script while giving a tragic backstory to SRK's character, who experiences his father's murder, a wronged mother, and the demise of his little sister. Talking about Shah Rukh Khan being cast in a negative role, Abbas-Mustan further shared that they believed his character was a "hero". The director duo added that there was a motive behind his actions. About Baazigar Produced under the banner of Venus Movies, Baazigar starred Shah Rukh Khan in a dual role, Ajay Sharma, and Vicky Malhotra. SRK was paired opposite Kajol and Shilpa Shetty in the movie. The 1993 film also featured actors like Raakhee, Dalip Tahil, and Johnny Lever. Baazigar was loosely based on Ira Levin's 1953 novel A Kiss Before Dying.

Made for Rs 4 crore, this was a hit film where the hero turned villain, earned 6 times its budget, actors are..., movie name was...
In a surprising twist, Baazigar directors Abbas-Mustan have revealed that the cult classic's initial script had a very different climax; Kajol's character was meant to kill Shah Rukh Khan's Ajay. Yes, the same SRK who turned anti-heroism into Bollywood gold was originally written off by his co-star. 'We didn't want to show Shah Rukh as a villain. He was a hero seeking justice,' the director duo recently shared, opening up about how the now-iconic character of Ajay Sharma evolved from a full-blown villain into a more layered, emotionally charged anti-hero. What made Baazigar such a bold film in the '90s? Released in 1993, Baazigar was a massive risk for its makers and for SRK. While most male stars of the time played romantic leads and family-friendly heroes, SRK turned the tide with a role that was dark, manipulative, and even murderous. He plays a man seeking revenge against a corrupt businessman by targeting his daughters, one he kills, and the other he falls for. But originally, the ending was darker. According to Abbas-Mustan, Shilpa Shetty wasn't the only one meant to die. The twist? Kajol was supposed to discover the truth and kill SRK's character. Why was the ending changed? The filmmakers feared that making Shah Rukh Khan's character purely negative would alienate audiences. So they gave him a painful backstory: an abusive father, a helpless mother, and a burning desire for revenge. This made him more human, even if his actions remained morally questionable. 'We needed the audience to feel for him, to see where he was coming from.' That tweak turned Baazigar from just another thriller into a genre-defining film that launched SRK's superstardom and changed Bollywood's hero template forever. How did the risk pay off? Made on a modest budget of Rs 2 crore, Baazigar went on to collect Rs 14 crore at the box office, huge numbers for the time. It also opened the door for morally grey protagonists in mainstream Hindi cinema. And most importantly, it gave us one of SRK's most memorable performances.

He made some revelations in an interview with India Today. The actor said, 'I'm a living example of that. Abbas-Mustan were the ones who were supposed to direct it. I had actually narrated the film to them, but they deferred and went to Shah Rukh. Shah (SRK) and I were friends. There was a VHS cassette of A Kiss Before Dying at his place. I asked him about it, and he said, 'Your director came to me, left this tape, and told me not to say yes until you say no.' So he waited on me.' STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Deepak said that the directors apologised to him, saying 'please forgive us, we made a mistake. We'll compensate you someday', but Deepak told them that it was 'forgotten'. Shilpa Shetty has crafted an illustrious career in Bollywood, and she has delivered several iconic films throughout her journey. Among many, one of her classic films is 'Baazigar'. In recent times, the film's climax scene - featuring Shah Rukh Khan pushing Shilpa Shetty from a building - has received a lot of attention among the youth on social media. Recently, the actress graced a renowned film festival, and spilled the deets about shooting the climax of 'Baazigar'. 'I had no knowledge about films at that time, and I didn't know how to approach it. I was like a student on set. I used to be very nervous back then. Because I came from a South Indian background, I never spoke in Hindi on the sets. When I did 'Aag', I asked Kader Bhai to teach me Urdu, and that's when I learned from scratch. I used to feel very nervous about dialogue deliveries. But all of it is okay because I am able to convey. People understand what I am trying to say,' she shared.

Baazigar's Original Ending Had Kajol Killing Shah Rukh Khan
Abbas-Mustan share how Baazigar almost had a different ending, and why Shah Rukh Khan's character needed emotional depth. Before Shah Rukh Khan became the poster boy for romance, he shook up the '90s with a role few saw coming — a cold, calculating killer in Baazigar. Directors Abbas-Mustan recently reflected on how the thriller nearly turned out very differently. Speaking about the film's early development, the duo recalled how new the idea felt at the time. Mustan said, as quoted in SCREEN, 'It was a new concept at that time. We thought of Shah Rukh's character as a hero; he was negative, but he was our hero, and also, you have to understand why he did what he did in the film. For instance, if some character is doing something negative, but in the background he has some good qualities or there is a reason for him to turn negative, then if his character turns negative, that is also okay." But the original script was far more brutal. Mustan revealed that the early version of the film ended with the lead actress killing Shah Rukh's character. 'In the first draft of the film, the hero was an out-and-out negative character who saw a tough childhood as his father would be a drunk, and he would beat his mother, and the kid would grow up wishing that he would become rich one day. After growing up, the character decides to get into a relationship with both daughters of a millionaire and eventually kill one of the daughters to take over the millionaire's empire. Later, the second girl gets to know about the character's intention and kills him. This was the first draft of the film." That ending was eventually scrapped. The filmmakers felt the story needed more than just revenge and shock value — it needed heart. 'We realised that the film would not work without emotions, and the biggest emotion is the mother and father's." So they rewrote the film, giving Shah Rukh's character a tragic backstory involving a murdered father, a wronged mother and a sister he loved dearly. Abbas-Mustan took time from the producers to reshape the story. 'Screenplay was the most important aspect of Baazigar," Mustan said. The result was a film that not only redefined what a Bollywood hero could be but also became a box office hit. Baazigar told the story of Ajay Sharma, a man driven by vengeance, who cons his way into the lives of a businessman's daughters, murders one, and falls in love with the other before dying in the end. Even today, it stands as one of Shah Rukh Khan's most daring roles — one where he was the villain, but also the hero.
