Sambalpur: The Pocso special court in Sambalpur district on Monday awarded 12 years of rigorous imprisonment to a 39-year-old man for raping and impregnating a 17-year-old girl under the pretext of marriage in 2014. According to the complaint filed by the girl's family on May 15, 2015, the accused maintained physical relations with her under the false promise of marriage. When she became pregnant and asked him to marry her, he refused. The family then held a village-level meeting, where it was decided that the accused should marry the girl. Following this, the man took a house on rent to live with her, as per the village's decision. However, after a few days, he abandoned her. The girl later gave birth to a boy. The man subsequently moved to Boudh district and married another woman. After learning about this, the girl's family lodged a formal complaint with the local police station. Special public prosecutor Santosh Panda said, "POCSO court special judge Abhilash Senapati, after recording the statements of 18 witnesses, sentenced the accused to 12 years and imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 under the . The court has directed the district legal services authority (DLSA) to provide a compensation of Rs 5 lakh to the survivor. The incident occurred on July 15, 2019, when the girl was working in her family garden. When her father briefly went inside the house, the convict attacked her, dragging her into nearby bushes. Upon resistance, he struck her with a stone, leaving her unconscious and partially clothed. The survivor's mother, who had been sent to assist their daughter, found her unconscious with injuries to her mouth. The girl was rushed to a local hospital and later transferred to Vimsar, Burla. "After regaining consciousness the next day, the survivor narrated her ordeal to her mother who lodged a complaint with the local police station," said special public prosecutor Santosh Panda. Police arrested the man following medical examination and investigation.
