Caught ‘taking bribe', Delhi cop suffers anxiety attack, lands in hospital

Caught in the act of allegedly taking a Rs 25,000 bribe, a Delhi Police head constable suffered an anxiety attack and landed in the hospital, officers said. The incident took place at North Delhi's Burari police station on Friday night when a team from the Vigilance department was lying in wait to arrest the head constable. DCP (Vigilance) Anyesh Roy confirmed the developments and said that the policeman is out of danger. 'He would be arrested as soon as he is discharged from the hospital, and further investigation will continue,' DCP Roy said. According to the police, the Vigilance team received a complaint from a businessman in Burari; he alleged that the head constable demanded a bribe of Rs 75,000 to not remove his personal mobile tower from his terrace. The resident, who lives in West Kamal Vihar, had a complaint registered against him at the Burari police station by his neighbours, who claimed that he had put a mobile tower on his terrace. 'The head constable then contacted the resident and demanded Rs 75,000 from him for not initiating the removal of his tower,' a police officer said. The resident then filed a complaint with the Vigilance department. Police said he was asked to offer the bribe to the accused officer in three tranches of Rs 25,000 each while they laid a trap. 'On Friday night, the complainant went to the Burari police station with the money, and the team from the Vigilance department caught the head constable in the act,' the officer said. Police said the head constable had a bout of anxiety and complained of uneasiness. He was taken to the Burari hospital, where he is in the ICU. On Saturday, senior officers also ordered an inquiry against the SHO of Burari station to ascertain his role in the bribery case. In the meantime, the responsibilities of the SHO would be taken over by Inspector (ATO) Jaspal Singh.

Man held for setting vehicle showroom on fire in Aurangabad

Aurangabad: A man was arrested on Sunday evening for allegedly setting a two-wheeler showroom ablaze in the district, causing damages worth about Rs 50 lakh. The accused, identified as Prem Kumar, was taken into custody by the city police following an investigation into the incident. The fire broke out on June 27 night at a two-wheeler showroom near Hasouli Mor under Aurangabad Nagar police station limits. Initially believed to be an accident, the incident took a criminal turn after the showroom owner, Ashok Kumar Singh, filed a formal complaint suspecting foul play. According to Aurangabad town police station in charge Upendra Singh, Vishnu Sharan, a local resident, had purchased a scooter from the showroom on March 31. After experiencing issues with the vehicle, he returned it for repairs. The scooter was handed back to him on June 27, but he remained dissatisfied with the repairs. Subsequently, Vishnu's relative, Prem, allegedly visited the showroom, where he reportedly assaulted the staff and issued threats. The showroom owner, fearing further trouble, shut down the premises and left. Later that night, he was informed that a fire had broken out at the showroom. In his complaint, Singh accused Prem and Vishnu of setting the showroom on fire. Based on the complaint and preliminary evidence, Prem was arrested. Police said the investigation is going on and further action will be taken based on the findings.

Puri Rath Yatra Stampede: Congress demands resignation of Chief Minister and Law Minister

Bhubaneswar, June 29 (UNI) The Odisha Congress today demanded the resignation of Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi and Law Minister Prithviraj Harichandan, holding the state government entirely responsible for the Saradhabali stampede that claimed the lives of three devotees. A fact-finding team constituted by Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) President Bhakta Charan Das visited Puri and conducted a detailed inquiry into the circumstances that led to the stampede near the three chariots at the Gundicha Temple. The team comprising former PCC President Prasad Harichandan, former Minister Jagannath Patnaik, PCC Vice President Santosh Singh Saluja, and former Minister Nagendra Pradhan visited the District Headquarters Hospital to assess the condition and treatment of those injured in the incident. The members expressed shock and sorrow upon learning that two seriously injured patients—whose legs were completely severed—were discharged without receiving adequate medical treatment. Reiterating their demands, the Congress team called for special compensation of Rs.50 lakh for the families of the deceased and Rs.25 lakh for those seriously injured. Holding the state government wholly accountable for the tragedy, the team asserted that the Chief Minister, Deputy Chief Minister, and Law Minister should step down on moral grounds, as the responsibility for managing the Rath Yatra rested with them. The PCC team submitted its report to Pradesh Congress President Bhakta Charan Das. UNI DP GNK
