Fake currency seizure reveals investment fraud racket

1 2 Kolkata: Following Saturday's seizure of counterfeit currency with a face value of Rs 9 crore from a hotel near the Dhamakhali ferry ghat in Sandeshkhali, North 24 Parganas, police have unearthed an online investment fraud racket. Police said the gang was run by Abhishek Tiwari, who is on the run. On Monday, police arrested Tishan Sen, and a search is on for his aides, Sirajuddin Molla and Debottam Chakraborty. ADG (CID) Vishal Garg said, "Tiwari and Sen were arrested by Kolkata Police in Feb in an investment fraud case. We found that the accused offered huge loans to people without much paperwork or background checks. Once the victims agreed to speak to them, they made video calls and used genuine money at the top and fake currency at the bottom to show that they had the cash ready. The victim was then asked to pay a 1%-2% commission to avail of the loan. This was how they cheated Subhasish Acharya of Burnpur, Asansol, of Rs 22 lakh. Acharya, a builder, was offered a loan of Rs 30 crore and got trapped in this scam." The gang printed the counterfeit currency from a shop in Sealdah. They had told the shop owner that the currency would be used in a movie. You Can Also Check: Kolkata AQI | Weather in Kolkata | Bank Holidays in Kolkata | Public Holidays in Kolkata

Illicit liquor valued at over Rs 12L destroyed in Indore

Indore: Indore Excise Department on Thursday destroyed bulk liquor valued at Rs 12.82 lakh, which was deemed unfit for consumption. "The action to destroy the illicit liquor was taken on the orders of Indore Collector Asheesh Singh and under the supervision of assistant excise commissioner Abhishek Tiwari and sub-divisional officer Abhijeet Srivastava," the excise officials said. They added that at Mount Brewery Limited in Simrol, 317 cartons of seized liquor, including those involved in ongoing court cases, were systematically destroyed. The total volume of destroyed liquor amounted to 2,853 bulk litres, with an estimated market value of approximately Rs 12.82 lakh. The destruction process involved crushing the bottles under a road roller. Senior officials said that the liquor found "unfit for human consumption" posed severe and often fatal health risks. This category typically includes contaminated or adulterated alcohol, illicitly brewed alcohol and expired alcohol. Consuming alcohol that is unfit for human consumption can pose the risk of methanol poisoning and even lead to organ damage and deaths. "The destruction of the unsuitable liquor by the Excise Department is a critical measure to prevent these dangerous substances from reaching the market and posing a grave threat to public health," Tiwari said, adding that action against illicit liquor production, sale and transportation will continue in days to come.

Indore excise dept fines nine more liquor shops

Indore: The Indore district excise department imposed fines totalling Rs 22.95 lakh on nine more liquor shops for violating pricing regulations, bringing the total penalty levied on 17 out of 18 identified shops to Rs 43.75 lakh. Following a thorough investigation, the department found evidence of 18 liquor establishments selling alcohol either above maximum retail price (MRP) or below minimum selling price (MSP). After issuing notices to all concerned licensees, the cases were presented by assistant excise commissioner Abhishek Tiwari to collector Asheesh Singh for adjudication. On Monday, collector Singh resolved nine additional cases, imposing fines of Rs 22.95 lakh. This update was recorded on the e-Excise portal by the assistant excise commissioner. Only one case now remains to be resolved, which is expected to be finalised shortly. This ongoing crackdown aims to safeguard consumer interests and ensure strict control over liquor sales, he said. The liquor shops fined today include Kachhi Mohalla, GPO Chauraha, Shivni, Chhawani, Pardeshipura, Hatod, Reti Mandi Chauraha, Sajan Nagar, and Transport Nagar liquor shop. It is noteworthy that just three days prior, fines totalling Rs 20.82 lakh were imposed on eight other shops.
