Florida restaurant employee arrested after customer shot to death over food order

People at a popular tourist spot in Osceola County were running for their lives Wednesday night after deputies say a Checkers employee shot and killed a customer over a fast-food order. The restaurant remained closed on Thursday as crime scene tape blocked off the drive-through. Osceola County deputies arrested Elijah Mackey, 23, on Thursday in connection with the shooting. 'There were a whole bunch of cops here, like, it was scary,' said Jarisa Lindsey. >>> STREAM ACTION NEWS JAX LIVE <<< 'It's just crazy. It's not that serious. It shouldn't be that serious where you get into an argument, then end up taking someone's life,' said customer Kelvin Lindsey. He ate dinner at the restaurant Wednesday and drove by later to see the crime scene. 'From every entrance there was more cops, and I'm sitting here like why they are here, what are they doing. Then when we got to this area this was a concentrated area where a lot of officers were at,' he said. Osceola County deputies say an argument broke out between Mackey, an employee at Checkers, and a customer over a food order. That confrontation escalated to gunfire. People working next to the Checkers say they heard gunshots, and everyone started running. They shut everything down for the night. Mackey was taken into custody Thursday and faces a first-degree murder charge. 'People gotta change. Learn how to control your emotions. It's not that serious. A lot of things get escalated to that point because of misunderstandings,' said Lindsey. Authorities identified the victim as Wesley Robertson. Living in a work zone: Jacksonville Beach locals sound off on 900-day project

A major infrastructure overhaul in Jacksonville Beach is shaking up more than just the streets. It's part of a 900-day construction project that aims to improve drainage, sidewalks and roadways — but for some residents, it's become a long and dusty nightmare. The city said the work is necessary to upgrade aging infrastructure, especially east of A1A, where flooding has long been an issue. Crews are currently working near First Street South and Sixth Avenue South, as well as on Seventh, Eighth and Ninth avenues south. Mayor Chris Hoffman is asking residents for patience. 'We do ask impacted residents and businesses to be patient … but in the end, they're going to see better drainage, better paving, and better parking,' Hoffman said. [DOWNLOAD: Free Action News Jax app for alerts as news breaks] But patience is wearing thin for residents like Mike Meiners, who said the construction damaged parts of his property. 'I had nice landscaping here. They ripped it all out. They shot some concrete through the wall,' Meiners said. 'I'm hoping they'll fix my wall.' Brin Balcom, who lives nearby, said the biggest issue for her has been the dust. She said her SUV was covered in a thick layer of dirt before recent rain helped wash it off. [SIGN UP: Action News Jax Daily Headlines Newsletter] 'It's a little frustrating, but I mean it's going to be a nice road,' Balcom said. 'They're going to pave it. So, I'll hang in there.' The $30 million project is expected to be completed by early 2026 — nearly 200 days ahead of schedule, according to the mayor. City officials say residents will be notified in advance of any service interruptions or road closures. In the meantime, drivers and neighbors are encouraged to plan for detours and delays. City of Jacksonville opens new playground at Friendship Fountain

On Saturday, the City of Jacksonville cut the ribbon on its newest playground, offering a new place for kids to play Downtown. The St. Johns River Park playground welcomed kids for the first time during the city's Easter Eggstravaganza event. The history-themed play space features a large sailing ship as a centerpiece. Despite the playground's completion, there's still more to come to the St. Johns River Park. The Downtown Jacksonville website says it will have restrooms, a wedding venue, picnic area, and interpretive gardens 'to help tell the story of the city's founding and the American Heritage River at the heart of our city.' See a site plan and renderings below: Completion is scheduled for early 2026. Just two days before the ribbon-cutting, Friendship Fountain reopened following two weeks of maintenance, which added a new coat of paint and mechanical improvements. The fountain reopened last February after renovations. It originally opened in 1965. State says Orlando mayor could be removed from office regarding immigration policy

Florida's attorney general is warning Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer not to enforce an immigration policy his city adopted several years ago. The City of Orlando approved the legislation called the 'Trust Act' in 2018. >>> STREAM ACTION NEWS JAX LIVE <<< It prevented government employees from inquiring about the immigration status of law-abiding citizens. On Monday, Attorney General James Uthmeier announced on social media that he sent a letter to Dyer reminding him that the policy was 'void' because of a law Gov. Ron DeSantis signed in 2019. The letter read, in part, 'Sanctuary policies are not tolerated or lawful in Florida. Failure to abide by state law may result in the enforcement of applicable penalties, including but not limited to being held in contempt, declaratory or injunctive relief, and removal from office by the Governor...'.
