Survey aims to help keep Newport active
John Griffiths, MS for Newport East, set up the survey, which is open until September 8, to learn more about issues sports organisations face around access to facilities, funding, and growing participation in sport. Mr Griffiths said: 'We have so many fantastic sports clubs here in Newport East, many of which are run by dedicated volunteers who are passionate about their clubs and they need support to keep running.' Mr Griffiths has always been a strong advocate for exercise, activity, and physical health. He regularly takes part in local Parkruns and he set up the Active Newport initiative last year to encourage sports and physical activity. He said: 'The wider health benefits of physical activity cannot be understated. Active lifestyles support stronger mental well-being by reducing stress and anxiety, enhance social connections through community activities, support the environment through reduction of car emissions and contribute to overall public health by lowering risks of diseases.' Sports organisations in Newport are being urged to complete the survey, which can be found at The information collected will help identify barriers and improve support for grassroots sports in the city, by feeding the information to Newport City Council, Aneurin Bevan University Health Board, Welsh Government and others. Mr Griffiths said: "The survey aims to make positive change and targeted support for clubs, whether that be funding, facility provision, or the repurposing of current spaces. So please complete the survey to help keep Newport active!"

MS helps cycling and song event to raise funds for choir
John Griffiths, MS for Newport East, teamed up with the City of Newport Male Voice Choir for its 'Spin and Sing' fundraiser at Tesco Extra in Spytty. The event, which raised £473 for the choir combined live singing and a cycling challenge. (Image: Submitted) Mr Griffiths said: 'I'm incredibly grateful to everyone who took part and supported the Spin and Sing fundraiser. "The City of Newport Male Choir, led by Mark, Sarah and others, were in fantastic voice all day. They were entertaining shoppers with well-known songs, including a bit of Tom Jones, that really lifted spirits. "I was equally impressed by their willingness to jump on the bikes and help with our fitness challenge!' The event was made possible thanks to Newport Live and Momentwm, who provided the bikes, and Danielle Powell, community champion at Spytty Tesco, who helped make the event happen. (Image: Submitted) Mark Main, chairman of the choir said: 'It was a great effort to all those involved raising valuable funds for the choir. "We had a great day raising the profile of the choir and hopefully may also have got a few new choristers, as there was interest from several individuals talking to us. "We all had a wonderful time providing entertainment to the shoppers and everyone had a go on the bicycles. 'Our thanks go to John, the other councillors and supporters who gave up time on a Sunday to support the choir at this event." The fundraiser also marked a key moment in Mr Griffiths' Active Newport initiative, which was launched to encourage people to get active in ways which suit them. He said: 'One of the most powerful messages to come from the Active Newport conference last year was that being active isn't just about playing competitive sport. It can include joining a choir, dancing, or getting involved in community fitness events like this. 'Spin and Sing was a perfect example of how rewarding taking part in community activities and getting moving can be.'

Politicians enjoy a taster session at local bowls club
Local politicians enjoyed a taster session at Newport Indoor Bowls Centre. John Griffiths MS and Jessica Morden MP were welcomed to the centre by Welsh representatives Gavin and Kelly. They were given a tour of the facilities and discussed the centre's ambitions with director Graeme Howard and his team. Mr Griffiths said: "I was pleased to visit the Newport Indoors Bowls centre as part of my ongoing Active Newport campaign. "A lot of the conversation we had was around the importance of strong partnerships – and it was great to hear about the work Graeme and his team are looking to do with others at the Glebelands to improve sporting provision in this part of Newport. "I haven't had a go at bowls for over thirty years so it was nice to also have a go at a sport which requires lots of skill." Ms Morden said: "It was a real pleasure to visit Newport Bowls Club and to hear directly from Graeme and the team about the club and the huge successes of some of the players who train there. "I look forward to joining the team again when they're hosting a tournament."
