Squid Game's Gong Yoo Cleared In Harassment Case, Woman Sentenced For False Allegations
Last Updated: South Korean actor Gong Yoo was exonerated after a woman falsely accused him of harassment. The Daejeon District Court sentenced her to six months in prison. South Korean actor Gong Yoo has been legally exonerated after a woman who falsely accused him of harassment was found guilty of defamation. The case, which garnered significant public interest, concluded on July 29 with the Daejeon District Court's Criminal Division 5 issuing a suspended sentence to the defendant. Identified only as 'A', the woman in her 40s was sentenced to six months in prison, suspended for two years of probation. The court held her accountable for violating South Korea's Act on Promotion of Information and Communications Network Utilisation and Information Protection. Between January 2020 and March 2021, the woman posted 235 defamatory statements across various online platforms, falsely alleging that Gong Yoo was threatening and harassing her. One of the most notable incidents occurred during a live broadcast by Gong Yoo in January 2020, where the woman commented: 'I'm being threatened from behind, and there isn't a single day I haven't been threatened." She further claimed: 'He torments me to the point of neurosis." Following an investigation, authorities confirmed that there was no personal connection between the actor and the accused, and all her claims were found to be fabricated. The court remarked: 'The claims made by A are completely groundless and, beyond that, she repeatedly spread false information over a long period." Highlighting the impact of such misinformation on public figures, the court noted: 'Even though the victim is a public figure and naturally subject to public attention, the nature of the crime is very serious." The woman's prior criminal history also played a role in the proceedings. 'Although the defendant has two prior convictions for similar offenses, her acknowledgment of the crime and her intention to receive treatment at a hospital were taken into account in sentencing," the court explained. Gong Yoo, known for roles in Goblin, Train to Busan, and Squid Game, has not publicly commented on the verdict. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. After facing all of the ridicule and judgment, the actress is finally addressing the rumours. Song Ha Yoon releases an official statement on bullying allegations On July 2, as per reports from Allkpop, the actress released an official statement about the bullying rumours and allegations. The statement was released to the public through her legal representatives, and claimed that the allegations are false; however, in order to prove her claims, it has taken time since the alleged incident is dated to be more than 20 years ago. The statement read that "In response to the school bullying controversy raised against Song Ha Yoon last year regarding incidents said to have occurred over 20 years ago, she has consistently maintained that these claims are false." They continued by sharing that as soon as the allegations were falsely shared and started accusing Ha Yoon of bullying 20 years ago, the actress took strict and immediate legal action. Meanwhile, Ms. Oh has repeatedly refused to cooperate and has claimed to be living in the United States as well. Since they still retain their Korean citizenship passport, the court allowed for the case to be moved forward. Not only that, but a 'designated notification order' was also issued against Ms. Oh, ensuring that if and when she enters South Korea , the appropriate authorities will be notified of their return to the country. Song Ha Yoon's claim on the allegations Ever since the alleged rumours were shared online, the actress has firmly denied that any bullying activity took place in her school years. As the case proceeds, public institutions, notarised statements, and any other required evidence have been submitted from the 'Intimate Strangers' actress's side to the authorities for official investigation. In light of more damning accusations made by Kim Saeron's family yesterday (7th May 2025) at the press conference involving the family's legal representative and YouTuber Kim Seui of Garo Sero Institute, Kim Soohyun's agency, has issued an official statement in regards to the accusations. On the same day of the press conference, GOLDMEDALIST rebuked all accusations made towards actor Kim Soohyun (김수현), stating 3 main points of argument, where they point out that the accusations made with proof were fabricated to defame him. Here are the highlights of the statement: GOLDMEDALIST's Position On The Audio Recording Claimed By HoverLab GOLDMEDALIST claims that the obtained audio recording of Kim Saeron (김새론) was fabricated using AI or similar technology. The statement also states that the audio provider who had given the recording to HoverLab had also approached them, demanding money, with an audio recording of the late actress making favourable comments towards Kim Soohyun. The agency also states that the perpetrator is not someone who could have had any contact with Kim Saeron, and investigations are well underway or the legitimacy of the recording. GOLDMEDALIST's Plan Response Towards HoverLab GOLDMEDALIST stands with their resolve that HoverLab has inflicted serious cyber attacks on Kim Soohyun. They have pointed out HoverLab's crimes of defamation, cyber sex crimes and evidence tampering. Moving forward, GOLDMEDALIST will immediately file criminal complaints and charges against HoverLab for violations of the 'Stalking Punishment Act' and the 'Act on Promotion of Information and Communications Network Utilisation and Information Protection' (Defamation).
