Sooraj Barjatya says he cannot make films about life's realities as he was ‘born with a golden spoon': ‘Karan Johar, Aditya Chopra, we have not seen hardships of life'
If you are a Bollywood buff, you would know that the 1990s were largely shaped by three directors: Sooraj Barjatya, Aditya Chopra, and Karan Johar. They ruled the industry with films like Hum Aapke Hain Koun, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, and Hum Saath-Saath Hain. They also contributed to many other productions from their respective banners, Rajshri Productions, Yash Raj Films, and Dharma Productions. Now, the Hum Aapke Hain Koun director has revealed the one thing they all have in common. In a conversation with Bollywood Hungama, Sooraj Barjatya shared, 'I think three of us are quite similar at one point. Of course, they are much younger to me, but we are from the same generation.' Talking about their choice of larger-than-life films, Sooraj explained, 'We are born with golden spoons. We have not seen the hardships of life. We also travelled in cars.' He added, 'But fortunately or unfortunately, when it came to filmmaking, we were passionate about it too. So, we showed the world that was all fairytale. And the '90s were such that people wanted to watch fairytales. We went with the flow and found ourselves making a particular kind of cinema. I think Adi, Karan, and I wanted to show dreams. If any of us were ever asked to make a film about reality, or to define what life is, I don't think any of us would be aware of that life.' ALSO READ | The real horror in Dhadak 2 isn't the killer, it's us When asked why he didn't tap into issues like infidelity, action and violence like Karan Johar and Aditya Chopra did through their films like Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna, and Dhoom, the director shared: 'Maybe because I am more conservative.' He explained, 'Maybe it is to do with my upbringing. If you see us individually also, I think we are on the good side of cinema. Given a chance, even Karan would like to do a Rocky Aur Rani today. Maybe it is to do with our age, but essentially we are making family oriented films. But yeah, comparatively, I am the most conservative of them all. I think my strength lies there.' Sooraj Barjatya, 61, marked his directorial debut in 1989 with the Salman Khan-starrer Maine Pyaar Kiya. Similarly, Aditya Chopra, 54, and Karan Johar, 53, marked their directorial debuts in 1995 and 1998 with their films Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge and Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, respectively.

War 2— Aditya Chopra brings 'Kajra Re' & 'Dhoom 3' strategy back for this film: 'Hrithik Roshsan and Junior NTR's dance number will release...'
Yash Raj Films will only release a glimpse of the hugely-anticipated Hrithik Roshan & NTR dance off in War 2 and preserve the magic of seeing them dancing with each other only for the big screen read more Aditya Chopra is known for disruptive thinking when it comes to mounting tentpoles of India for over 30 years now and for War 2, he is bringing back his Kajra Re & Dhoom 3's Kamli music strategy! Yash Raj Films will only release a glimpse of the hugely-anticipated Hrithik Roshan & NTR dance off in War 2 and preserve the magic of seeing them dancing with each other only for the big screen when people throng to watch War 2 from August 14th. The song glimpse is set to drop this week. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD A trade source discloses, 'War 2 is the biggest tentpole film of this country in 2025 and everything about War 2 is hugely anticipated. Everyone's eyes are on NTR & Hrithik's dance number and Aditya Chopra knows this. He wants to keep building the hype and hunger for this song till the release and not give the full song to people to watch it for free. He wants to bring people into theatres to watch War 2 and experience the magic of seeing Hrithik & NTR dancing together on the big screen, just as it is supposed to be consumed.' The source adds, 'This is classic Aditya Chopra strategy. He preserved the best song of Bunty Aur Babli, Kajre Re, pre-release and people were blown seeing it in theatres. He locked up all the songs of Dhoom 3 and people were crazy for them in theatres for them, like Kamli exploded. He knows he has gold with him in the NTR-Hrithik dance song and he will not give it out just like that. He wants people to come to theatres to watch it and then he wants people to keep coming back to theatres to enjoy it more and more because it will be unavailable on the internet. Aditya Chopra is playing the box office game with footfalls and ticket sales for War 2 being top priority for him.' Directed by Ayan Mukerji, the blockbuster YRF Spy Universe's War 2 also stars Kiara Advani as the female lead. The film is set to release on August 14th in Hindi, Telugu & Tamil.

Saiyaara box office collection day 19: Ahaan Panday, Aneet Padda's romantic film beats Padmaavat after crossing Rs 500 cr mark
Mohit Suri's romantic film Saiyaara, starring Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda, is slowly but surely registering growth at the box office. On the day its worldwide collection crossed the coveted Rs 500 crore mark, the film achieved another triumph back home. With domestic earnings at Rs 304.6 crore after 19 days of release, the movie has now surpassed another all-time Hindi blockbuster. On Tuesday, Saiyaara earned Rs 2.5 crore, a marginal improvement on its Monday collection of Rs 2.35 crore. Saiyaara has now surpassed Sanjay Leela Bhansali's 2018 period drama Padmaavat, starring Ranveer Singh, Deepika Padukone, and Shahid Kapoor. The movie earned Rs 302.15 crore at the Indian box office. Saiyaara will likely beat its next target — Kabir Khan's Bajrangi Bhaijaan (2015), starring Salman Khan and Kareena Kapoor — by this weekend. According to production banner Yash Raj Films, Saiyaara has also become the 'highest grossing love story in the history of Indian cinema.' It's an interesting update to come from YRF since it also delivered one of the most celebrated romantic films of all time, Aditya Chopra's 1995 directorial debut Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, starring Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol. 'With Saiyaara, Mohit Suri hit his first 500 crore worldwide blockbuster and Ahaan-Aneet became the first debutants in the history of Indian cinema to enter the coveted ₹500 crore club when it comes to worldwide collections! Total overseas collection is now at a monstrous ₹507 crore gross is 18 days,' the banner said in a statement. 'As a company, we share this historic success with the captain of the ship, Mohit Suri, who has given this generation a defining love story they can call their own, the incredible debutants Ahaan & Aneet who made the world feel love on screen through their brilliant acting, Aditya Chopra for his unwavering guidance, the entire cast and crew of Saiyaara and everyone at YRF for their invaluable contribution towards making this film into a global phenomenon,' said YRF CEO Akshaye Widhani. Calling the movie a 'pure love story', Widhani said the film's success proves that the romance genre gets the most love from audiences if offered the right story. 'We are humbled with this success story and it fuels us to look for the next film that can break out and make India proud globally. It's deeply encouraging to see young audiences lead the way in embracing this film, disproving doubts about their theatrical participation. Thank you to every viewer, everywhere, for making Saiyaara the defining love story of our time,' he added.
