Encounter under way between security forces and terrorists in J&K's Awantipora

NEW DELHI: An encounter broke out between security forces and terrorists in Tral area of Jammu and Kashmir 's Awantipora on Thursday. "Encounter has started at Nader, Tral area of Awantipora," J&K Police wrote on X. "Police and security forces are on the job. Further details shall follow," it added. This comes days after three Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorists were killed in an encounter with the armed forces under Operation Keller in Shopian. The slain terrorists were linked to Pakistan-backed banned outfit LeT. Two of them — Shahid Kuttay and Adnan Shafi Dar — were locals from Shopian. Their family homes had been demolished after the April 22 Pahalgam attack that killed 26 people, mostly tourists. The identity of the third terrorist is yet to be confirmed. Security forces also seized a massive cache of weapons and ammunition, including rifles, bullets, and grenades a day after gunning down the three Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) terrorists under Operation Keller. The recovered arms are believed to have belonged to the trio neutralised on Tuesday during a joint operation in the dense forests of Shoekal Keller. Operation Keller was launched following intelligence inputs from Rashtriya Rifles about the presence of armed terrorists in the area. The encounter marks Kashmir's second major counterterrorism success this year, following the March 16 killing of a Pakistani terrorist in Handwara. Security forces remain on high alert amid a temporary pause in Indo-Pak hostilities that followed India's May 7 airstrikes on nine terror launchpads in PoK under Operation Sindoor .

Operation Keller: Huge arms haul recovered in J&K's Shopian after elimination of 3 LeT terrorists - All you need to know

NEW DELHI: A day after eliminating three Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) terrorists in a fierce encounter, security forces on Wednesday recovered a large cache of arms and ammunition in Jammu and Kashmir's Shopian district. The weapons, comprising AK-series rifles, grenades, and hundreds of rounds of ammunition, were found in the dense forests of Shoekal Keller, where the terrorists had been hiding before the confrontation. The recovery followed a joint counterterrorism operation led by the Indian Army , CRPF, and J&K Police under, Operation Keller . Acting on intelligence inputs received by the Rashtriya Rifles, security forces launched a swift cordon and search mission in the upper reaches of Shopian, approximately 80 km from Srinagar. On Tuesday, three militants affiliated with the Pakistan-backed terror outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba were gunned down after a brief but intense firefight. Among the dead were two local youths from Shopian, Shahid Kuttay and Adnan Shafi Dar, whose family homes were demolished using explosives. Both had been involved in recent terror activities in the region. "Based on inputs by intelligence agencies about presence of terrorists in the Keller Forest of Shopian District, J\&K, a joint operation was launched by Indian Army, J&K Police and CRPF on 13 May 2025, resulting in neutralisation of three hardcore terrorists including the local commander of LeT/TRF after an intense encounter. The three were actively involved in recent terror activities in the region. Recoveries from the operation include AK series rifles, large quantity of ammunition, grenades and other war like stores. The success of this operation is the result of an excellent synergy between all Security Forces and Intelligence Agencies. Indian Army remains unwavering in its mission to eliminate terror. Every attempt to disrupt peace will be met with decisive and unrelenting force," the Indian Army said in a statement. Operation Keller came in the backdrop of massive terror hunt launched by Indian armed forces. On April 22 , Pakistan-sponsored terror attack in Pahalgam took place, which claimed 26 lives, mostly tourists, making it one of the deadliest attacks in the Valley. In response, India launched Operation Sindoor , a coordinated retaliatory strike on May 7 that targeted nine terrorist launchpads across Pakistan and PoK. These precision airstrikes destroyed 9 key terror infrastructure, including high-value targets, Jaish-e-Mohammed's Bahawalpur headquarters and Lashkar-e-Taiba's key bastion in Muridke, in mainland Pakistan. While authorities have not yet confirmed whether the militants killed in Shopian had direct links to the Pahalgam massacre, investigations are ongoing. Meanwhile, security forces remain on high alert in the region. Despite the ceasefire announced last week between India and Pakistan, counterinsurgency efforts within Kashmir continue at full scale.

Three Lashkar militants killed in Shopian behind recent terror activities: Army

Srinagar, May 14 (UNI) A day after three militants affiliated with Lashkar-e-Taiba and its shadow outfit "The Resistance Front" were killed in a gunfight in south Kashmir's Shopian district, the Army said the trio were actively involved in recent terror activities in the region. The militants — Shahid Kuttay, Adnan Shafi Dar, and Ehsan ul Haq Sheikh — all residents of Shopian, were killed during an encounter in the upper reaches of Keller on Tuesday. Officials identified Kuttay as the operational commander of LeT in South Kashmir. According to the Army, the operation was launched based on intelligence inputs regarding the presence of militants in the Keller forest. A joint team of the Army, J&K Police, and CRPF was involved in the operation, which culminated in the elimination of the three 'hardcore terrorists,' including the LeT/TRF commander. 'The three were actively involved in recent terror activities in the region. Recoveries from the operation include AK series rifles, a large quantity of ammunition, grenades and other war-like stores,' the Army said in a statement. It added that the operation was a result of excellent coordination between security forces and intelligence agencies. Reaffirming its commitment, the Army stated: 'We remain unwavering in our mission to eliminate terrorism. Every attempt to disturb peace will be met with decisive and unrelenting force.' Defence officials said that in the wake of the Pahalgam massacre, security forces have significantly intensified operations against LeT and other terror outfits. Vulnerable routes and areas in South Kashmir have been re-dominated and put under heightened surveillance. 'For the past several days, we had continuous inputs about terrorist movement in Shopian. On the night of May 12, their presence was confirmed in the upper reaches of Keller,' a defence official said. A joint operation was swiftly initiated, and on the morning of May 13, around 9 AM, troops spotted movement of three armed militants. 'When challenged, they opened indiscriminate fire. Our troops retaliated effectively, resulting in the neutralisation of all three,' the official said, adding the trio were responsible for multiple terrorist incidents in the region.
