What a run Wrexham women had to finish as runners-up in Hong Kong

The Reds lost just one of the six matches they played at the HKFC Standard Chartered Soccer Sevens Tournament, finishing the event as runners-up. Wrexham became the first ever women's side to compete in the tournament from outside of Asia. The Reds began the event with their match-up versus Thailand's Chonburi FC and Grace Morris' strike confirmed a 1-0 win. Next up was a meeting with Eastern Thunder, from Singapore, and a brilliant Ava Suckley effort from long-range made sure of another 1-0 outcome as Wrexham concluded the opening day with a 100 per cent record. Day two opened with a clash against Hong Kong FC and the Reds maintained their unbeaten record via a 0-0 draw. Suckley grabbed a key leveller as Wrexham secured another point from a 1-1 draw against Hong Kong's TSL in their next match-up. In the final group match, Wrexham played out a 0-0 draw against Kitchee Sports Club. The top-two sides would go through to the women's cup final and one of these would be Wrexham, who finished second in the group phase. Kitchee Sports Club would be their opponents in the showpiece and a slender 1-0 defeat meant Wrexham finished a great event as runners-up. Manager Gareth Owen told the club's X site: "I always expect the girls to wear this badge with pride and passion, and they have." Wrexham's squad consisted of 10 players, with a number of the Adran U19s North title winners included. These were Chloe Ankers, Morris and Leah Burke, who have all made first team appearances. They were joined by first team players Lili Jones, Suckley and Erin Lovett, who added invaluable experience. Captain Jones told the tournament's website: 'It's massive for our profile to be here. 'For our women's team to be the first from the club to come to Asia is huge in Wrexham's history and it's an honour to be part of it. Everyone has been so friendly and it's a great set-up.' Wrexham squad: Chloe Ankers; Annie Collins; Grace Morris; Seren Cashen; Leah Burke; Bella Devereux; Lili Jones; Erin Lovett; Ava Suckley; Mia Roberts.

Wrexham women all set to compete in big Hong Kong tournament

Steve Dale's Reds will travel to Hong Kong to take part in the HKFC Standard Chartered Soccer Sevens Tournament - becoming the first women's side to do so from outside of Asia. The tournament, which introduced a women's competition for the first time in 2024, includes Premier League sides Aston Villa, Brighton and Hove Albion and West Ham United. Wrexham's squad will consist of 10 players, with a number of the Adran U19s North title winners included. These are Chloe Ankers, Grace Morris and Leah Burke, who have all made first team appearances. They will be joined by first team players Lili Jones, Ava Suckley and Erin Lovett, who will add invaluable experience. Mia Roberts, a member of the Wrexham line-up that secured promotion to the Adran Premier, will take the final position in the squad. All league matches in the competition will be played on Friday and Saturday, May 16 and 17, with the knockout contests taking place on Sunday, May 18. Joining Wrexham across the three-day tournament will be Hong Kong's TSL, Kitchee and Hong Kong Football Club, alongside Thailand's Chonburi FC Women and Eastern Thunder from Singapore. The top-two sides will go through to the women's cup final, with teams ranked third and fourth playing in the shield final, while the plate final will be contested between the fifth and sixth-placed sides. Matches will last for 14 minutes in total, made up of two seven-minute halves, with a one-minute interval at half-time. Wrexham U19s manager Gareth Owen told the club's website: 'I'd like to say a massive thank you to Hong Kong Football Club for the invitation to play in this year's HKFC Soccer Sevens 2025. 'We are so excited to represent the club out in Hong Kong for what will be not only a fantastic footballing opportunity, but a life experience for them as people. 'The way I see it, there's no point entering into a tournament if you're not planning on giving your everything to win it - who knows, we might just add to the silverware that the club has won this season!' Wrexham AFC CEO Michael Williamson added: 'We are excited to be entering a women's team into the HKFC Soccer Sevens tournament for the first time. 'As well as the opportunity to play in Asia for the very first time as a club, the tournament also provides fast-paced football and high-level opposition to test the players at the end of what has been another successful season on the pitch for our women's section, at both first-team and Under-19s level. 'To be invited to the long-standing and successful tournament is a mark of our growth of the Wrexham brand, and will provide a fantastic opportunity for our young players. 'We're looking forward to taking our place at the HKFC Soccer Sevens.' For more information on the tournament, visit the HK Soccer Sevens site. Wrexham squad: Chloe Ankers; Annie Collins; Grace Morris; Seren Cashen; Leah Burke; Bella Devereux; Lili Jones; Erin Lovett; Ava Suckley; Mia Roberts.

Battling Wrexham U19s lose out to Cardiff in shoot-out

The Reds, this season's Adran U19s North title winners, tackled Cardiff City in the national play-off final at Newtown's Latham Park ground. While Wrexham had the lead at the interval, the Bluebirds battled back to level things up in the second half and they eventually went on to triumph 4-2 on penalties. Things couldn't have started any better for Wrexham and they got their noses in front after four minutes. Anna Owen struck to hand the Reds the lead, but an almost immediate impact from Scarlett Baker-Perry hauled Cardiff level midway through the second half. She came off the bench on the hour and her goal came in the 66th minute. Try as they might, neither side could find a winner and the play-off had to be decided by a penalty shootout. Goalkeeper Grace Olsen took the spotlight as she saved the Reds' penultimate spot kick and then stepped forward to score Cardiff's final penalty. Maizie Johnson and Seren Cashen found the target for Wrexham during the shootout. While it was a heartbreaking loss to close the season for the young Reds, it's still been a cracking campaign for the squad. They finished two points clear of The New Saints to take the Adran North title, losing only twice in the league. Wrexham won their remaining 10 matches, scoring 37 goals in the process and conceding just eight. Grace Morris was Wrexham's leading scorer in the league with 11 goals, while Leah Burke and Cashen supplied five assists apiece. Wrexham's senior team will be looking for a different outcome this Sunday when they tackle Cardiff in the Welsh Cup final.
