Today in Norway: A roundup of the latest new on Monday
Norwegian film director wins Grand Prix in Cannes Joachim Trier has made Norwegian film history, winning the prestigious Grand Prix award at the Cannes Film Festival for his latest feature, Affeksjonsverdi . 'This is overwhelming,' Trier said from the stage, after his film received a rare 19-minute standing ovation. It's the first time a Norwegian film has won the award, which is second only to the Palme d'Or. The family drama stars Renate Reinsve and Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas as sisters whose lives are upended by the reappearance of their father, played by Stellan Skarsgård. The film premieres in Norway on September 12. The Palme d'Or was awarded to Iranian director Jafar Panahi for It Was Just An Accident, a thriller inspired by his time in prison. Advertisement Political push to label ultra-processed foods The Centre Party and Red Party have joined forces to demand clearer labelling on ultra-processed foods, ahead of a debate in parliament on Monday. 'We have to give consumers better information,' Rødt MP Geir Jørgensen said, arguing that this was both a public health and class issue. The initiative is backed by nutrition biologist Marit Kolby, who has compared the food industry to the tobacco industry. 'They'll just have to adapt,' she said. Advertisement Explosion in Oslo: two under suspicion Two people are under suspicion after an explosion ripped through a flat in Kampen, Oslo, on Saturday evening, blowing out at least one window. Police believe something was being produced in the apartment that later ignited. "It was powerful," said Oslo police incident commander Steinar Bjerke. The two suspects are being investigated for violating Norway's fire and explosion protection laws. No one was injured, and neighbours who had evacuated were allowed back home later that evening. Homes evacuated after landslide near stranded cargo ship Police in Trøndelag evacuated four homes on Saturday afternoon after a landslide occurred near the grounded cargo ship NCL Salten in Trondheimsfjorden. The slide, which police described as 'ongoing,' is believed to have been triggered near salvage operations for the vessel. 'We're acting on advice from geotechnical experts,' incident commander Viggo Hansen told NRK. Several areas near the vessel have collapsed, with widths ranging from 10 to 50 metres. The road has also been closed and members of the public removed from the area. Advertisement Norway still weighing request to extradite terror suspect from Syria Norwegian prosecutors are still considering whether to formally request the extradition of a woman held in a Syrian detention camp, who is suspected of involvement in the 2022 mass shooting in central Oslo. The woman, a Norwegian national, is being held in the al-Roj camp in Kurdish-controlled northeastern Syria. She is suspected of contributing to a terrorist act and of membership in a terrorist organisation in connection with the attack on June 25th 2022, in which Zaniar Matapour shot and killed two men and injured nine others near the London Pub and Per på Hjørnet in Oslo's nightlife district. So far, no formal extradition request has been sent to Syrian authorities. But state prosecutor Sturla Henriksbø told the Klassekampen and Dagbladet newspapers that Norwegian authorities were talking to Norway's foreign affairs ministry and other government bodies about doing so. A key issue, he noted, is what would happen to the woman's young son, who is also in the camp. 'One specific question is whether it would be possible to bring her son home at the same time, so that we do not take any action that leaves a minor child behind alone in the camp,' Henriksbø said. Complicating matters further is the fact that the camp lies in territory that is not under the control of the Syrian government. However, a recent deal between Damascus and local Kurdish authorities could open a legal pathway for extradition. The woman, who has previously appealed to Norway for assistance, now says she does not wish to be returned. She declined an interview with Dagbladet, but her lawyer, Petar Sekulic, confirmed her opposition to extradition. She denies all charges.

Norway film starring Elle Fanning gets 19-minute Cannes ovation
Director Joachim Trier found himself crying behind the camera as he shot 'Sentimental Value', his moving new tale about a quietly fractured family that got an extraordinary 19-minute standing ovation Thursday at the end of its premiere at the Cannes film festival. 'It sounds cheesy,' he said, 'but I wept a lot making this film because I was so moved by the actors' playing members of an arty family in Oslo who cannot talk to each other despite all their supposed sophistication. 'The actors are my friends. I know that they were being halfway a character and halfway themselves. And that they were also dealing with stuff,' said the maker of 'The Worst Person in the World', which landed the Norwegian two Oscar nominations and won newcomer Renate Reinsve the best actress award at Cannes in 2021. Many critics that year said it also should have won the Palme d'Or top prize. 'We were a family too,' said Trier, rehearsing his script around the kitchen table of the beautiful old wooden home in Oslo where the film was shot, itself a character in the film. The heads that keep butting in Trier's on-screen family are the absent father, an arthouse filmmaker who has long been put out to grass, played by Swedish legend Stellan Skarsgard, and his stage actress daughter (Reinsve). 'I think a lot of families carry woundedness and grief,' Trier said. 'And talk often doesn't help. It gets argumentative. We get stuck in our positions, the roles we give each other unconsciously.' US actress Elle Fanning arrives for the screening of the film "Affeksjonsverdi" (Sentimental Value). Norwegian director and screenwriter Joachim Trier poses during a photocall for the film "Affeksjonsverdi" (Sentimental Value). Elle Fanning a 'mensch' The bad old dynamics are changed by the arrival of a Hollywood star—Elle Fanning playing someone only millimeters from her real self—a fan of the father, who comes bearing lots of Netflix dollars to revive one of his long-stalled scripts. 'We don't get too many Hollywood stars wanting to be in small Norwegian-language films,' Trier joked. But just like her character in the film, Fanning got the part through complete fandom, flying to Oslo between shooting the Bob Dylan biopic, 'A Complete Unknown', and the new 'Predator' in New Zealand. 'I am a massive fan' of Trier, she told AFP in Cannes, where the film is in the running for the Palme d'Or. 'I think 'The Worst Person in the World' is easily one of the best films in the last decade or even longer. It is just perfect.' 'When Joachim sent me the script I read it and I was just crying and crying by the final page. It is so emotional,' Fanning added. 'It's a very personal piece for Joachim and you can just feel that rawness in it.' Trier—who comes from a family steeped in the Scandinavian film industry—admitted it is all very 'meta. You're making a film about a family with your filmmaking family. And you've got a meta Hollywood star.' But they are not that many parallels with his biological family. 'It's not like I'm throwing anyone under the bus. My whole family has actually seen the film and are very supportive,' he said. The filmmaker father, he insisted, is a mash-up of great auteurs such as Ingmar Bergman, Krzysztof Kieslowski and John Cassavetes. Trier, 51, is famous for the bond he builds with his actors and he praised Fanning as the latest member of the family. 'She is a real mensch—a really kind and collaborative, cool person,' he said. Trier 'magic' The 'magic' that Fanning said Trier creates on set comes from taking your time, he told AFP, taking on the big themes with a light, humorous touch. 'Anyone who's had experience of therapy—and I have—will know that it's about the silences and letting things arrive. Very often is also the case with actors,' said Trier. 'We had quite a few moments like that in the film actually. Renate would look at me and I look at her and I say, 'What was that? That was interesting.' And we don't talk about it anymore. 'But when people see it in editing, they go, 'Wow!' That was also the reaction of most critics at Cannes, with The Hollywood Reporter calling it 'exquisite' and Vanity Fair saying it was 'gorgeous and gripping'.' Deadline's Pete Hammond said 'Sentimental Value' 'sneaks up on you... and has one of more satisfying endings I have seen in some time, perfectly pitched and worth the wait for its human truth.' — AFP

The best and worst celebrity outfits at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival so far
The 2025 Cannes Film Festival is underway in France. The event will run until May 24 and feature numerous opportunities for bold fashion. Eva Longoria wore a stunning gown at a premiere, while Bella Hadid missed the mark with her look. The stars are out at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival. This year's event kicked off on May 13 with an opening ceremony and the premiere of the French film "Leave One Day." The festival will continue until May 24, providing nearly two weeks of French street style and red-carpet fashion. So far, some celebrities have turned heads in bold ensembles, while others have missed the mark with their looks. From Bella Hadid to Halle Berry, here are the best and worst looks we've seen. Elle Fanning's strapless gown was simple, but effective. She walked the "Affeksjonsverdi" red carpet on Wednesday in a strapless Giorgio Armani design that looked pretty and chic. It was fitted to her body, decorated with pink rose appliqués, and completed with a plunging sweetheart neckline. Alex Consani wore a two-piece set that was almost perfect. She arrived for "The Phoenician Scheme" screening on Sunday in a uniquely shaped Schiaparelli set. The model's structured top had a beaded, off-the-shoulder neckpiece that covered her chest and a high-low peplum waistband. Her pants, on the other hand, were oversize and wide. Though her statement blouse had potential, Consani's pants were a little too big and needed tailoring. A form-fitting skirt might have looked better with the top piece. Alexander Skarsgard faced a similar issue. The actor could have looked classic with a traditional tuxedo for the red-carpet event, or he could have attempted a more daring style. Instead, he tried to do both at the same time. He wore a sharp Saint Laurent tux with his trousers tucked into thigh-high leather boots — a style the fashion house first revealed in its January runway show. The shoes were distracting and felt out of place with his otherwise basic look. Mariska Hargitay had a glamorous pink moment on Saturday. For the "Die, My Love" screening, Hargitay chose an off-the-shoulder gown crafted with black satin and sparkling hot-pink fabric. The color combination was sharp, the gown's straight silhouette fit the actor perfectly, and her elbow-length gloves made the outfit even more elegant. For the "Eddington" red carpet on Friday, Jeremy Strong should have picked a different suit. His brown ensemble included a button-up shirt, a wrap blazer, straight-leg trousers, and a bow tie, all cut with raw hems. While the rough style might have worked for a different event, it looked too casual at Cannes. His black loafers were also too harsh against the lighter outfit. Natalie Portman showed the best of Dior. She walked the "Eddington" red carpet in a strapless, sparkling creation from the French fashion house. Its silver top was covered in sparkles and wrapped with a black bow, while its floor-length skirt had Dior's classic Junon petals. Portman accessorized the look perfectly with a bun hairstyle and a thick diamond necklace. Angelina Jolie's gown would have worked better in a different color. Also on the "Eddington" red carpet, Jolie wore a strapless Brunello Cucinelli design. It had a thick floor-length skirt, a fitted bodice, and all-over sparkles that highlighted its rope texture. Though the actor looked pretty, her gown's ivory color matched her skin tone too closely and washed her out. The same dress in a pink or lilac shade could have worked better. Elaine Zhong stunned in a cream-colored ball gown. The Chinese actor wore the strapless dress on the "Dossier 137" red carpet. Its structured bodice was decorated with beaded appliques, and its cups were shaped with flower petals. To accessorize the glamorous look, she added a sparkling diamond choker, matching earrings, a thick bracelet, and vibrant red lipstick. Zoe Saldaña's all-black ensemble didn't stand out. She attended the "Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning" red carpet in a black Saint Laurent gown. Though her sleeveless dress was classic, it was also overly simple. Statement jewels could have easily enhanced the look. She also draped a dark leather jacket around her arms, which was much more casual than the rest of her outfit. Araya Alberta Hargate sparkled down the same red carpet. She wore a crystal-covered dress that looked like it was molded to her body with its form-fitting design. Its strapless, snake-print bodice was corseted with a deep plunge down the middle, and its floor-length skirt was pink and embellished with countless sparkles. The Thai actor completed her look with a large diamond necklace crafted in the shape of leaves. Heidi Klum had a pearlescent moment, but it wasn't her best. Elie Saab designed the model's off-the-shoulder gown. It had a deep V-neckline, see-through stripes, and all-over sparkles in blue and purple. Some of those details might have worked on their own. But together, especially with the gown's mermaid shape, its accents made it look more theatrical than glamorous. Tom Cruise looked sharp in maroon. Cruise attended a promotional event for "Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning" at Cannes. In doing so, he became one of the best-dressed men at the festival so far this year. He wore a fitted, textured knit polo and matching trousers with sharp pleats. The outfit was understated and vibrant on its own, while his brown dress shoes and dark sunglasses gave it an edge. Halle Berry made a last-minute fashion change, but her new outfit didn't work for her. When Berry walked onto the Cannes red carpet, she wore a shapeless Jacquemus gown with a black-and-white stripe print. She later told reporters that she'd originally planned to wear an "amazing dress" from Gaurav Gupta, but had to find a new look when Cannes announced a new dress code that prohibits voluminous gowns with long trains the day before the festival began. Unfortunately for Berry, the bold dress she chose was so flowy and oversize that it seemed to wear her, when it should have been the other way around. Isabeli Fontana could have been mistaken for a princess in a metallic gown. Nicolas Jebran designed her halter gown. The form-fitting piece had knotted fabric at the hip, a floor-length skirt with a short train, and a hip-high slit that revealed her sparkling pumps. The gown was also adorned with a sparkling silver piece that covered one shoulder and was embedded with turquoise stones. The ensemble was elegant and fit Fontana perfectly. Bella Hadid is always one of the best-dressed stars at Cannes, but her outfit choice for the 2025 opening ceremony was underwhelming. Saint Laurent designed her sleeveless black dress with some interesting details. Its straps crisscrossed across her back to create cutouts and a deep plunge on the side of her chest. However, the front of the gown was overly simple. It had an asymmetrical neckline that looked mishapen, and a thigh-high slit that was cut too far to the side. Even her massive emerald earrings from Chopard weren't enough to make the ensemble memorable. Eva Longoria sparkled down the red carpet in a stunning gown. Her Tamara Ralph gown was strapless and covered in square metallic pieces that sparkled in the light as she walked. It also had velvet panels at the waist that gave the dress some shape and matched its glamorous train. Not only was the dress tailored perfectly to Longoria, but the actor also accessorized strongly. She wore a statement necklace, rings, and earrings from Pasquale Bruni. Irina Shayk wore a fun gown, but a different hairstyle could have elevated the whole look. The model arrived wearing a black Armani Privé gown with all-over white polka dots. It had a strapless neckline, off-the-shoulder puffed sleeves, and a full skirt. On its own, the dress was fun, frilly, and perfect for Cannes. But Shayk wore her hair styled in a dramatic shape — a bun atop a strip of pin-straight hair — that distracted from her outfit. This year's Cannes Film Festival is taking place in the wake of Trump´s vow to enact tariffs on international films. Cannes, where filmmakers, sales agents and journalists gather from around the world, is the Olympics of the big screen, with its own golden prize, the Palme d´Or, to give out at the end. Filmmakers come from nearly every corner of the globe to showcase their films while dealmakers work through the night to sell finished films or packaged productions to various territories. 'You release a film into that Colosseum-like situation,' says Brazilian director Kleber Mendonça Filho, who´s returning to Cannes with 'The Secret Agent, a thriller set during Brazil ´s dictatorship. 'You´ve got to really prepare for the whole experience because it´s quite intense - not very far from the feeling of approaching a roller coaster as you go up the steps at the Palais.' Teri Hatcher was all smiles as she picked up a hot beverage as she departed the five-star hotel after attending The History of Sound premiere the night prior The Desperate Housewives star, 60, looked smart as she layered a black blazer over a matching sheer blouse and wide legged trousers Cara looked in good spirits as she headed out and about along the sea front Cara beamed as she stepped out from the Hotel Martinez The star headed towards the crowd of waiting fans as she posed for photos The actress kept cool in her blue co-ord Trump sent shock waves through Hollywood and the international film community when he announced on May 4 that all movies 'produced in Foreign Lands' will face 100 percent tariffs. The White House has said no final decisions have been made. Options being explored include federal incentives for U.S.-based productions, rather than tariffs. But the announcement was a reminder of how international tensions can destabilize even the oldest cultural institutions. The Cannes Film Festival originally emerged in the World War II years, when the rise of fascism in Italy led to the founding of an alternative to the then-government controlled Venice Film Festival. In the time since, Cannes´ resolute commitment to cinema has made it a beacon to filmmakers. Countless directors have come to make their name. This year is no different, though some of the first-time filmmakers at Cannes are already particularly well-known. Kristen Stewart (The Chronology of Water), Scarlett Johansson (Eleanor the Great) and Harris Dickinson (Urchin) have all unveiled their feature directorial debuts in Cannes´ Un Certain Regard sidebar section. Many Cannes veterans have returned, including Tom Cruise (Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning), Robert De Niro - who received an honorary Palme d´Or 49 years after Taxi Driver premiered in Cannes - and Quentin Tarantino, who paid tribute to low-budget Western director George Sherman.

Elle Fanning put on a glamorous display as she led the arrivals at the Sentimental Value premiere during Cannes Film Festival on Wednesday night. The American actress, 27, pulled out all the stops to celebrate the release of the Norwegian-language film, titled Affeksjonsverdi in its original dialect. Elle, who takes on a leading role in the movie, oozed elegance in a shimmering mint green sequinned gown adorned with white roses. She added to her frame in a pair of platform heels and let her outfit do all the talking as she kept her accessories minimal. They were also joined by the likes of Joachim Trier, Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas and Nathanaël Karmitz as they celebrated their new release. Affeksjonsverdi/Sentimental Value follows sisters Nora (Renate) and Agnes (Inga) as they reunite with their estranged and charismatic father Gustav (Stellan). A film director, he offers stage actress Nora a role in what he hopes will be his comeback film, but she turns it down and he instead offers it to a Hollywood star, played by Elle. The American actress is dropped in the middle of their complicated family dynamics as they try to navigate their newly rekindled relationship with their father. It was not the only star-studded premiere to take place, as Paul Mescal and Josh O'Connor's new film The History of Sound also debuted at Cannes on Wednesday. Kirsten Stewart's directorial debut The Chronology of Water also premiered to a four-minute standing ovation, as did Scarlett Johansson directorial debut Eleanor The Great. Over recent years, Cannes has arguably won more attention for the outfits worn by its celebrity guests than the roster of feature films being screened on the Croisette. Elle appeared to be in jovial spirits as she flashed a huge smile while arriving for the premiere They shared a sweet moment on the red carpet as they ran up to one another and shared a hug Renate cut an elegant figure in a plunging lilac silk dress with a pleated layered skirt, which she styled with a statement silver necklace Attracting more models and influencers than actors and filmmakers, the annual ceremony has seen an increase in risque red carpet fashion statements. For the 'sake of decency', have been implemented at this year's festival. According to organisers, the austere move is an attempt to stifle the celebrity trend for 'naked dresses' - namely provocative outfits that reveal considerably more than they conceal - on the red carpet. 'For decency reasons, nudity is prohibited on the red carpet, as well as any other area of the festival,' states a Cannes festival document. 'The festival welcoming teams will be obligated to prohibit red carpet access to anyone not respecting these rules.' It's understood that the iconic venue now adopts a more conservative dress code, with suits, dinner jackets and floor-length evening gowns generally favoured over headline grabbing ensembles. Classic black dresses, cocktail dresses, pant suits, dressy tops and elegant sandals, 'with or without a heel', will also be permitted. While the decision to implement a more stringent policy will be a first, it is not known if French TV broadcasters, wary of airing nudity, played a role in its enforcement. Major red carpet events, including the Cannes Film Festival, are aired in France by France Télévisions.
