Norway film starring Elle Fanning gets 19-minute Cannes ovation

Director Joachim Trier found himself crying behind the camera as he shot 'Sentimental Value', his moving new tale about a quietly fractured family that got an extraordinary 19-minute standing ovation Thursday at the end of its premiere at the Cannes film festival. 'It sounds cheesy,' he said, 'but I wept a lot making this film because I was so moved by the actors' playing members of an arty family in Oslo who cannot talk to each other despite all their supposed sophistication.
'The actors are my friends. I know that they were being halfway a character and halfway themselves. And that they were also dealing with stuff,' said the maker of 'The Worst Person in the World', which landed the Norwegian two Oscar nominations and won newcomer Renate Reinsve the best actress award at Cannes in 2021. Many critics that year said it also should have won the Palme d'Or top prize. 'We were a family too,' said Trier, rehearsing his script around the kitchen table of the beautiful old wooden home in Oslo where the film was shot, itself a character in the film.
The heads that keep butting in Trier's on-screen family are the absent father, an arthouse filmmaker who has long been put out to grass, played by Swedish legend Stellan Skarsgard, and his stage actress daughter (Reinsve). 'I think a lot of families carry woundedness and grief,' Trier said. 'And talk often doesn't help. It gets argumentative. We get stuck in our positions, the roles we give each other unconsciously.'

Elle Fanning a 'mensch'
The bad old dynamics are changed by the arrival of a Hollywood star—Elle Fanning playing someone only millimeters from her real self—a fan of the father, who comes bearing lots of Netflix dollars to revive one of his long-stalled scripts. 'We don't get too many Hollywood stars wanting to be in small Norwegian-language films,' Trier joked.
But just like her character in the film, Fanning got the part through complete fandom, flying to Oslo between shooting the Bob Dylan biopic, 'A Complete Unknown', and the new 'Predator' in New Zealand. 'I am a massive fan' of Trier, she told AFP in Cannes, where the film is in the running for the Palme d'Or.
'I think 'The Worst Person in the World' is easily one of the best films in the last decade or even longer. It is just perfect.' 'When Joachim sent me the script I read it and I was just crying and crying by the final page. It is so emotional,' Fanning added. 'It's a very personal piece for Joachim and you can just feel that rawness in it.'
Trier—who comes from a family steeped in the Scandinavian film industry—admitted it is all very 'meta. You're making a film about a family with your filmmaking family. And you've got a meta Hollywood star.' But they are not that many parallels with his biological family. 'It's not like I'm throwing anyone under the bus. My whole family has actually seen the film and are very supportive,' he said.
The filmmaker father, he insisted, is a mash-up of great auteurs such as Ingmar Bergman, Krzysztof Kieslowski and John Cassavetes. Trier, 51, is famous for the bond he builds with his actors and he praised Fanning as the latest member of the family. 'She is a real mensch—a really kind and collaborative, cool person,' he said.

The 'magic' that Fanning said Trier creates on set comes from taking your time, he told AFP, taking on the big themes with a light, humorous touch. 'Anyone who's had experience of therapy—and I have—will know that it's about the silences and letting things arrive. Very often is also the case with actors,' said Trier. 'We had quite a few moments like that in the film actually. Renate would look at me and I look at her and I say, 'What was that? That was interesting.' And we don't talk about it anymore.
'But when people see it in editing, they go, 'Wow!' That was also the reaction of most critics at Cannes, with The Hollywood Reporter calling it 'exquisite' and Vanity Fair saying it was 'gorgeous and gripping'.' When Sarah Lezito began messing around with motorbikes at 13 she never dreamed that one day she would become the stunt double of some of Hollywood's biggest stars. The French winemaker's daughter has stood in for Scarlett Johansson -- twice -- on "Avengers 2" and "Black Widow" and appeared in a dozen films including "The Batman". The 32-year-old is one of a very rare breed of motorcycle stuntwomen, with a massive social media following that helped bring her from the vineyards of France's Champagne region to Hollywood. AFP caught up with her on her own personal training track amid the otherwise tranquil vineyards near Epernay, the Champagne capital in northeast France. Barely astride her red chrome Kawasaki, she was off down the track performing stunts with disconcerting dexterity, her long brown hair trailing out of her helmet in the wind. "This is kind of my temple," she said after performing a series of gravity-defying tricks including standing with both feet on top of her 200-kilo (440-pound) machine and then flipping herself onto the handlebars. "People think I'm working, but it mostly allows me to release all the pressure," said Lezito, whose lucky charm -- a plastic beaded bracelet -- is wrapped around the throttle of her bike. 'Doing wheelies in a field' The woman now popularly known as the "world stunt champion" (although there is no recognised world championship) began her acrobatics career young on the family holding near Epernay. "I fell into stunts by watching videos," she told AFP. "No one in my family was in the motor sports world. My father only had an agricultural quad, not at all made for sports, but I started trying to do wheelies with it in a field." Then she began posting her stunt videos on YouTube. But she seemed destined to follow her family into wine and viticulture until she posted a video of a medley of tricks one day in March 2013 called "One out of Billion Girls". "It was thanks to this video that they noticed me," she said. The "they" being the team from the Hollywood blockbuster "Avengers 2". A few months later, she abandoned her winemaking studies to fly to South Korea to perform Johansson's stunts in the movie. Because she "adapted quickly" to stunt work, Lezito decided to go professional, appearing in several major movies, including "Inferno", "Millennium" and "The Batman" with Zoe Kravitz. "I had to ride through flames for 'Bad Girl', a film which was never released. On paper, it was very simple, but I didn't have a helmet," she recalled. And in the summer of 2023 while filming David Fincher's "The Killer" in Paris, starring Michael Fassbender, Lezito had a severe fall. "I flew off the motorcycle, I wasn't going very fast but fast enough to land on my head and the helmet cracked." She ended up in the emergency room with a head injury. It "made her think", she told AFP, and she "decided to take a break" and put her Hollywood career on hold. Lezito now devotes herself to her social media channels, posting videos of her stunts to her more than 30 million followers -- including 9.5 million on Instagram, some two million more than MotoGP star Marc Marquez. Her garage doubles as a studio, with her YouTube trophies and gifts from her fans displayed on the walls. But it is also where she gets her hands dirty repairing her fleet of roughly 10 motorcycles. Austrian composer Johann Strauss II's "The Blue Danube" has, for many people, been synonymous with space travel since it was used in Stanley Kubrick's 1968 sci-fi classic "2001: A Space Odyssey". But the world-famous waltz truly travelled among the stars on Saturday when the European Space Agency's antenna broadcast a live performance of it into space to celebrate the composer's 200th birthday. The Vienna Symphony Orchestra played a concert in the Austrian capital. The concert was broadcast live on the internet and also shown at a public screening in Vienna, in New York at Bryant Park, and near the antenna in Spain. "The digitized sound will be transmitted to the large 35-metre satellite dish at ESA's Cebreros ground station in Spain," Josef Aschbacher, the ESA's director general, told AFP ahead of the performance. And from there, the waltz will be "transmitted in the form of electromagnetic waves", the Austrian astronomer said. For Norbert Kettner, director of the Vienna tourist board, the Danube waltz is a "true unofficial space anthem" because of Kubrick. The timeless waltz is the "typical sound of space", Kettner said, with the tunes being played "during various docking manoeuvres of the International Space Station (ISS)". When the waltz was performed on Saturday, the Vienna Symphony Orchestra noted the waltz's airiness as if it were floating through space, its director Jan Nast said. Nast, who put together the program for Saturday's hour-long "interstellar concert", said music is a language "which touches many people" and has "the universal power to convey hope and joy". Filling a gap Once transmitted via Spain's satellite dish, the signal will travel at the speed of light to eventually reach NASA's Voyager 1 spacecraft -- the most distant man-made object in the universe -- in approximately 23 hours and 3 minutes. After surpassing Voyager 1, it will continue its interstellar journey. By catching up with the spacecraft and its twin, Voyager 2, Austria also seeks to right a perceived wrong. Both Voyagers carry "Golden Records" -- 12-inch, gold-plated copper disks intended to convey the story of our world to extraterrestrials. The record holds 115 images of life on Earth, recorded in analogue form, and a variety of sounds and snatches of music.
