Police 'assault' RG Kar victim's mother, lathicharge protesters in Bengal

The mother of a trainee doctor, who was raped and murdered at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital a year ago, on Saturday accused the Bengal police of assaulting her while she was on her way to join a protest marking one year of the crime. Police also carried out a lathicharge on demonstrators, leaving over 100 people injured, according to the report by news agency PTI. Her bangle was broken and she also sustained a head injury during the scuffle. The victim's father said that despite permission from the court for a peaceful rally, Kolkata police tried to prevent the family from reaching Dorina Crossing to join the march. According to the report, Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari, BJP leader Agnimitra Paul, and several BJP MLAs staged a sit-in at the Park Street, alleging that over 100 protesters, including senior party leaders, were injured in the police action. Rally demanded Mamata's resignation The Mamata Banerjee administration is fearing this massive crowd which has gathered in protest, said Adhikari. She will pay dearly for this as the protest is only going to get bigger from here, he warned. Several agitators were seen holding the Tricolour, posters, and banners demanding justice for the victim and resignation of the CM. Scuffle between police and protesters PTI reported that large crowds gathered at both assembly points in Howrah and Kolkata, but state police blocked them from getting anywhere near the West Bengal Secretariat. Officers repeatedly issued loudspeaker warnings, urging demonstrators to follow the Calcutta High Court order and maintain law and order. Some protesters attempted to scale the 10-foot barricades, while others used blunt tools to break through the iron barriers and create openings. Security was tightened along the route, with scuffles breaking out between protesters and police in Howrah district. The state deployed large contingents of police, Rapid Action Force personnel, and water cannons at key points to stop the march.

"Investigation will definitely happen", BJP's Agnimitra Paul on TMC's demand for inquiry into Air India plane crash

Kolkata (West Bengal) [India], June 13 (ANI): Reacting to All India Trinamool Congress's demand for an inquiry into the AI-171 plane crash, BJP leader Agnimitra Paul on Friday assured the investigation will definitely happen. Speaking with ANI, Agnimitra Paul said, 'Our government will investigate. Do you think there will be no investigation after the death of 242 passengers, while the central government avenged the death of 26 Pahalgam victims?' 'One needs to prioritise things. People are waiting for DNA sampling so that the bodies of their kin can be handed over to them. Students in the medical college building died, and those injured are waiting for treatment. These are the priorities. The investigation will definitely happen.' She added. In a post on X, TMC demanded a 'thorough, transparent, and unbiased' investigation into the plane crash in which 241 passengers lost their lives. 'The nation is in mourning after yesterday's horrific Air India Plane Crash. In the aftermath of the tragedy, several conspiracy theories are being floated. We demand a thorough, transparent, and unbiased investigation to uncover the truth. No cover-ups. No politics. Just accountability. Passenger safety must be NON-NEGOTIABLE,' TMC wrote on X while attaching video of its leader Kunal Gosh. Kunal Gosh, in the video, said, 'There is an absolute need for thorough, unbiased investigation of the Ahmedabad plane crash. What is happening under this BJP rule? This is not safe. Was the maintenance not up to date? What happened?' On Thursday, the Air India Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, operating as flight AI 171, was en route to London from Ahmedabad when it crashed shortly after takeoff. There were 242 people on board, including 230 passengers and 12 crew members. Of the passengers, 241 died in the crash. The lone survivor, identified as Vishwashkumar Ramesh, a British national of Indian origin, sustained injuries and is undergoing treatment. The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) on Friday confirmed the recovery of the Digital Flight Data Recorder (DFDR), commonly referred to as the black box, from the rooftop of a building at the site of the Air India Flight AI-171 crash in Ahmedabad. The AAIB has launched a full-scale investigation into the crash, with over 40 staff from the Gujarat State Government joining efforts to support the Ministry of Civil Aviation teams on the ground. The black box, a critical piece of evidence, will be analysed to determine the cause of the tragic crash. (ANI)

Sharmishta Panoli's arrest: Mamata govt only works for Muslims, claims BJP leader Agnimitra Paul, thanks Kangana Ranaut

BJP leader Agnimitra Paul on Monday condemned the Mamata Banerjee-led government in West Bengal for the arrest of social media influencer Sharmista Panoli, who was held by Kolkata Police for allegedly hurting the sentiments of a religious communty. Paul cited recent incidents in West Bengal and said that the TMC government will not spare anyone if they say 'something against Muslims'. But no action will be taken if it is the other way round, she claimed. 'We have seen so many posts from West Bengal lately abusing India, PM Modi, our Goddess Maa Kamakhya, after Operation Sindoor, but no action was taken. It is a clear message from the Mamata government that if you are a Hindu or a Muslim who is abusing or saying something against Muslims, you will not be spared, but if it is the opposite, no action will be taken,' Agnimitra Paul was quoted as saying by ANI. The Bengal BJP leader also thanked Kangana Ranaut and the Delhi Bar Council for standing by Sharmistha Panoli, who was arrested by the Kolkata Police last week from Gurugram. 'I thank the Bar Council and Kangana Ranaut (for standing by Panoli). Every Indian, Hindu and nationalist Muslim must stand against this injustice,' she said. The Bar Council of Delhi on Monday demanded the immediate release of Sharmista Panoli to 'uphold the scale of justice'. Actress and BJP MP Kangana Ranaut also demanded the release of Panoli. 'Harassing someone in the name of law and order is not good,' she had said. Agnimitra Paul urged Hindus in West Bengal to rise, saying that the state needs a 'neutral government'. 'Hindus of West Bengal also need to rise; they are sleeping under the cloud of secularism. We need to have a neutral government. The police of the state today only see a religion.' The BJP leader further claimed that the police did not take any action against Anubrata Mondal, who recently came under fire for reportedly using "derogatory and abusive" language against a police official over a phone call. 'No action was taken against Anubrata Mondal, a TMC leader who abused a police officer. The Mamata government only works for the Muslims, not for Hindus,' she said. Kolkata Police arrested Sharmistha Panoli from Haryana's Gurugram on May 30. She is a law student in Pune, Maharashtra. May 31, Panoli was produced before the Alipore Court in Kolkata, which remanded her in judicial custody for 14 days.
