Analyst sees move to muscle out Peja before GE16

PETALING JAYA : The removal of Ahmad Faizal Azumu as Perikatan Nasional information chief is being viewed by political analysts as 'a clear sign' he is being squeezed out of the top PN leadership before the next general election. Political analyst Tawfiq Yaakub of Universiti Malaya said the absence of an official announcement on Radzi Jidin replacing Faizal as information chief, a post to which Faizal was appointed just five months ago, clearly showed an attempt to muscle him out. The latest development had dealt yet another blow to the reputation and image of Faizal, a former Perak menteri besar, who had been linked to other issues, including Bersatu matters in Perak. 'I'm confident that this change is linked to his declining performance and the growing wave of rejection against him,' Tawfiq told FMT. 'PN was in a dilemma – if the change wasn't made, internal pressure from within Bersatu and PN against Faizal would have become increasingly difficult to contain.' Last month, several Bersatu assemblymen and division leaders in Perak were said to be unhappy with Faizal for seeking a change of acting opposition leader in the state assembly. He had sent a letter requesting that Sungai Manik assemblyman Zainol Fadzi Paharudin swap seats with Changkat Jong assemblyman Nadziruddin Bandi, a change deemed to be part of a power struggle for the role of acting opposition leader. However, Faizal said the request was simply because Nadziruddin was recently promoted to Perak Bersatu secretary, which Zainol had relinquished. But his leadership abilities were called into question by analysts after Bersatu deputy president Hamzah Zainudin was reportedly assigned to alleviate tensions in the state party. In December, Faizal took over as PN information chief from Azmin Ali, who was made secretary-general, while Radzi was also appointed to the PN Supreme Council. Earlier this week, Pasir Mas MP Ahmad Fadhli Shaari revealed Radzi's appointment after saying the latter had chaired a meeting as PN information chief. Faizal was elected Bersatu vice-president alongside Radzi and Ronald Kiandee in November, after agreeing not to defend the deputy president's post to make way for Hamzah. In the 2022 general election, Faizal lost his Tambun parliamentary seat to PKR president Anwar Ibrahim by 3,736 votes. He also opted not to defend the Chenderiang state seat he won in the 2018 polls. Radzi's new role in PN could inject some much-needed spirit into the machinery, says Mazlan Ali of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, as Faizal seemed to be ineffective in the role. He said the party machinery under the information chief played a crucial role in spreading the coalition's messages to Malaysians. 'The dissemination of information is very important in order to boost PN's momentum,' he said. 'This is aimed at bolstering the coalition's position as a challenger to the Madani government'.

PN urged to clarify who is its information chief

PETALING JAYA : Perikatan Nasional leaders have been urged to make official announcements of changes in important positions, following questions raised about the status of Ahmad Faizal Azumu as PN information chief. The leader of a PN component party claimed that Radzi Jidin had been appointed to replace Faizal before the Ayer Kuning by-election last month, but no official announcement had been made so far. The source expressed disappointment, saying the absence of an official announcement gave the public the perception that there were internal conflicts within the coalition. 'There really is no issue or conflict among ourselves in the leadership. But when there's no official announcement, it makes us look bad and allows people to make all sorts of assumptions,' the leader told FMT. In a Facebook post around midnight, Pasir Mas MP Ahmad Fadhli Shaari said Radzi had chaired a meeting in his capacity as PN's information chief. In December, Faizal, commonly known as Peja, was named PN's information chief, taking over from Azmin Ali, who was made secretary-general. Radzi was also appointed to the PN Supreme Council. Both Radzi and Faizal are Bersatu vice-presidents.

PETALING JAYA : A social media post by PAS leader Ahmad Fadhli Shaari has sparked speculation over a possible change in Perikatan Nasional's leadership lineup. In the Facebook post, the Pasir Mas MP said Bersatu vice-president Radzi Jidin chaired a meeting in his capacity as PN's information chief. 'The PN information and communications department meeting today was chaired by Radzi Jidin, PN's information chief,' he said in a Facebook post. Radzi also shared a video of himself leading the meeting, though he did not clarify whether he was officially appointed to the role. In December, Bersatu vice-president Ahmad Faizal Azumu, commonly known as Peja, was named PN's information chief, taking over from Azmin Ali, who was made secretary-general. To date, PN has not issued any official statement on a leadership reshuffle involving Faizal or Radzi. Muhyiddin appointed Radzi as PN info chief verbally, says source
Putrajaya MP Radzi Jidin will receive his appointment letter after the next PN leadership meeting, said a party insider. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : Putrajaya MP Radzi Jidin's appointment as Perikatan Nasional information chief was made by coalition chairman Muhyiddin Yassin verbally in February, according to a party insider. The PN leader, who asked to remain anonymous, said Muhyiddin had made the appointment during a PN meeting. 'Tan Sri (Muhyiddin) only informed everyone verbally that he will be replacing Ahmad Faizal Azumu with Radzi,' said the source. An official announcement was not made because Muhyiddin had yet to chair a PN Supreme Council meeting where Radzi would receive his letter of appointment. The PN Supreme Council last met in February, the source said. 'Although he hasn't received the letter, Radzi was ordered to immediately chair a meeting involving the information chiefs of the PN components to coordinate their respective machinery,' the source said. However, Bersatu information chief Tun Faisal Ismail Aziz denied that Radzi's appointment was made verbally, describing it as 'fake news'. He said the source quoted by FMT was unreliable and did not have the actual information on the matter. FMT has sought clarification from Tun Faisal on when Faizal was replaced by Radzi. Radzi's appointment was revealed yesterday by Pasir Mas MP Ahmad Fadhli Shaari, who said Radzi had chaired a meeting as PN information chief, although Faizal had been named to the post in December. Faizal had taken over from Azmin Ali, who was made secretary-general, while Radzi was also appointed to the PN Supreme Council. Radzi and Faizal are both vice-presidents of Bersatu.

SD to remove Peja baseless, attempt to divide Perak Bersatu, says Kader Maideen
PETALING JAYA: Claims that there is a statutory declaration (SD) calling for the replacement of the Perak chairman of Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu), Datuk Seri Ahmad Faizal Azumu, are baseless. The Taiping Bersatu division chief, Kader Maideen Hussain, said that it is not part of Bersatu's culture to use SDs for the appointment of state leadership body chiefs. He stated that the report claiming SDs exist from Perak Bersatu division chiefs to replace the current chairman is not true. 'The appointment of the chief is entirely the prerogative of Bersatu president, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, and any decision or appointment made by the President is fully supported without any doubt. 'The dissemination of false and baseless news from unnamed sources is deeply regrettable, and the motives of the news portal in question are questionable. We have no time for malicious attempts to divide unity within Perak Bersatu,' he said in a statement on Wednesday (April 30), reported by Malay daily, Sinar Harian. Kader Maideen added that Ahmad Faizal's leadership as Perak Bersatu chairman and Perak Perikatan Nasional (PN) chairman has the full mandate from Muhyiddin, who is also the national chairman of PN. On Tuesday (April 29), a news portal claimed that 16 out of 24 Perak Bersatu division chiefs had signed an SD requesting a review or replacement of Ahmad Faizal's position as state chairman. The action reportedly stemmed from dissatisfaction over how Ahmad Faizal handled the request to switch seating arrangements between two Bersatu assemblymen — Datuk Zainol Fadzi Paharudin and Nadziruddin Mohamed Bandi — in the State Assembly. However, speaking to the daily, Ahmad Faizal chose not to comment on the alleged existence of the SD calling for his replacement. He took this approach, citing that the report merely quoted unnamed sources.
