Faizal: Government should consult ex-PMs before expanding SST

Focus Malaysia06-07-2025
BERSATU vice-president Ahmad Faizal Azumu urged the government to consult former prime ministers Mahathir Mohamad, Muhyiddin Yassin, and Ismail Sabri Yaakob before implementing major policies like the sales and service tax (SST).
He argued their experience could help find better ways to boost national revenue without burdening the people.
Ahmad Faizal criticised the government for taking 'shortcuts' by imposing taxes, cutting fuel subsidies, and raising electricity tariffs without exploring wiser alternatives, saying public disappointment with SST is widespread.
'Surely there are various ways we can increase the country's revenue to provide better services to the people without burdening them again.
'If the government wants to take the SST approach, I would like to suggest that the 10th Prime Minister meet with these three great former prime ministers who have served the country extensively.
'Ask them what is the best way forward. I am confident they are willing to share their ideas and views,' he told reporters after officiating the Tambun Bersatu Division Annual Conference at the Casuarina Convention Centre on Saturday.
The former Perak Menteri Besar said that nearly all traders and customers he spoke to during his market visits expressed disappointment with the SST. —July 6, 2025

Unity government open to talks on expanded SST implementation

BANTING: The unity government remains open to discussions if there are parties who believe certain goods should be exempted from the expanded Sales and Services Tax (SST). Umno deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan said that although the tax expansion is being implemented, it does not mean the government has shut its doors on negotiations or discussions over the matter. "Based on what the unity government has done so far, it seems there is room for negotiation. "If there is a need, especially for basic daily necessities, it can be brought to the government's attention. "The door for negotiations is not completely closed, but there must be a clear basis to justify the exemption of certain items from tax," he said when asked whether the government was still open to discussions following the expanded SST implementation starting this month. Earlier, Mohamad, who is also the Foreign Minister, launched the Kuala Langat Umno division delegates' meeting that was attended by 460 delegates from 90 branches at Dewan Sri Jugra here today. Yesterday, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi had said the SST should be implemented with a more flexible approach, particularly concerning basic food items. Zahid also said he had also raised the matter with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, suggesting that apples, oranges, and dates be exempted from the tax, with the cabinet agreeing that SST would not apply to those three food items.

Don't dream of being PM again: Pro-PAS voice tears into Muhyiddin's tax flip-flops

A PRO-PAS commentator, known as Tanaka Mustafa, criticised PN chairperson Muhyiddin Yassin for lacking a consistent taxation policy and urged him to abandon his ambition to become prime minister again. Tanaka described Muhyiddin's governance style as outdated, warning his reputation could suffer like Mahathir's if he returns as PM11 and performs poorly. 'Otherwise, his name will end up tarnished just like Tun Mahathir when he became PM7. 'Given today's political, geopolitical, and economic landscape, TS Muhyiddin's style of governance is outdated. He also accused Muhyiddin of flip-flopping on taxes, noting that while he now calls for abolishing SST, he maintained it when he was prime minister. 'Looking at the flowchart made by cyber troopers to mock this issue, we can see that TS Muhyiddin has no solution when it comes to taxation. 'He just uses policies as he pleases, according to his own whims. As long as he can oppose, he opposes. As long as he can exploit, he exploits. Not good,' he wrote in a post. On July 6, Muhyiddin denied claims that PAS is trying to undermine his leadership, stating that PAS and its president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang continue to support him. Muhyiddin said he had previously proposed a rotational leadership allowing PAS to chair PN, but the party declined and insisted he continue. This follows reports that PAS allegedly suggested restructuring PN to grant Bersatu deputy president Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin more operational authority through an executive committee managing day-to-day affairs while party presidents remain in the PN Supreme Council. Meanwhile, in June, Hamzah dismissed claims of a rift within PN and Bersatu, calling rumours of efforts to oust party leader Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin baseless. In an interview with Mingguan Malaysia, Hamzah said he would be the first to know if there were any such moves, but no one has approached him. As Muhyiddin's deputy in both PN and Bersatu, he stressed it would be foolish for anyone to plan an ouster without discussing succession with him, adding that the rumours were merely outsiders trying to divide the coalition. —July 13, 2025 Main image: Traveloka

KUALA LUMPUR, July 13 — Former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has been admitted to the National Heart Institute (IJN) for observation due to fatigue, his office said today. His aide, Sufi Yusoff, said the 100-year-old politician is expected to return home later this evening. 'Quick update: Dr M is currently under observation at IJN for fatigue-related issues. He is resting, but we expect him to be back home by this evening,' Sufi said in a brief press statement. He left the party about 10am, before it ended, after experiencing mild fatigue, The New Straits Times reported. His son, Tan Sri Mokhzani Mahathir, said there were no serious health concerns, adding that his father was simply tired from a function the night before and had not slept well.
