Sabah Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission gets new chief

Kota Kinabalu: Sabahan, Datuk Mohd Fuad Bee Basrah, who is currently serving as Penang Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Director has been appointed as the new Sabah MACC Director, with effect from Aug 15. MACC Deputy Chief Commissioner (Operations) Datuk Seri Ahmad Khusairi Yahaya said Mohd Fuad's appointment is expected to drive the anti-corruption agenda more aggressively and strategically in Sabah. Advertisement The handover ceremony was held at the Federal Government Administrative Complex, here, Wednesday and witnessed by Ahmad Khusairi. Mohd Fuad will replace Datuk Karunanithy Y Subbiah, who has been transferred to head Penang MACC after serving as Sabah MACC Director for nearly six years since Sept 2019. Speaking at the ceremony, Ahmad Khusairi said MACC's role extends beyond fighting corruption to helping the government prevent long-term financial leakages. He noted that Sabah's anti-leakage initiatives would have lasting positive impacts on all stakeholders. Advertisement 'Our direction in this State is not only to prevent corruption, but we must also think about how to help the State Government curb leakages so that the impact of these efforts is long-lasting,' Ahmad Khusairi said. He praised outgoing director Karunanithy for building public confidence in MACC and successfully leading major operations that demonstrated the agency's commitment to combating corruption and abuse of power in Sabah. In his farewell remarks, Karunanithy credited Sabah MACC's operational and prevention successes to strategic cooperation between Federal and State departments, as well as media partners. He thanked Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor and State Secretary Datuk Seri Safar Untong for their consistent support for MACC initiatives. MACC helps government prevent future leakages

KOTA KINABALU (Aug 6): The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) is not only tasked with fighting corruption but also plays a vital role in helping the government prevent future leakages, said MACC Deputy Chief Commissioner (Operations), Datuk Sri Ahmad Khusairi Yahaya. He said the Sabah State Government's efforts to curb leakages, for example, will bring wide-ranging impacts if done systematically. 'The direction in this state is not only to prevent corruption, but we must also think about how to help the State Government curb leakages so that the impact is long-lasting,' he said. Ahmad Khusairi said this after witnessing the handing over of duties for the Sabah MACC director post from outgoing director Datuk Karunanithy Y. Subbiah to Datuk Mohd Fuad Bee Basrah at the Sabah Federal Government Administrative Complex here on Wednesday. Mohd Fuad, who previously served as Penang MACC director, will officially take over as Sabah MACC director on August 15. Karunanithy has been appointed as the new Penang MACC director. Ahmad Khusairi praised Karunanithy's contributions, saying he played a pivotal role in strengthening public trust in MACC and successfully led several major operations during his tenure in Sabah. 'He has shown extraordinary commitment, firm and strategic leadership, and managed to overcome various major challenges throughout his service here,' he added. He also expressed confidence that the appointment of Mohd Fuad, a Sabahan, would further strengthen the commission's anti-corruption agenda in the state. In his farewell speech, Karunanithy said the success of the Sabah MACC during his tenure was due to strategic collaboration with federal and state departments, as well as media partners. 'I would like to express my appreciation and gratitude to the Sabah State Government, especially Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Haji Hajiji Haji Noor and State Secretary Datuk Seri Panglima Sr. Haji Safar Untong for supporting all initiatives — whether in operations, prevention, or governance reforms — proposed during my tenure,' he said. Karunanithy, who served as Sabah MACC director for five years and 11 months since September 17, 2019, urged MACC staff to continue upholding a work culture rooted in integrity and professionalism. Also present at the event were Sabah Federal Secretary Datuk Seri Haji Rosli Isa, Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Jauteh Dikun, and Kota Kinabalu City Hall Mayor Datuk Seri Dr Haji Sabin Samitah.

Project manager tried to burn RM1mil cash during MACC raid
A PROJECT manager arrested by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) for alleged corruption involving a data centre project tender tried to burn nearly RM1mil in RM100 banknotes to destroy evidence out of panic during the raid. The raid was conducted at his Petaling Jaya home last Thursday (July 17). MACC officers discovered thick smoke from the bathroom where the cash was being burnt. The raid also uncovered RM7.5mil in cash hidden in pillow boxes, along with luxury watches — Rolex, Omega, and Cartier — plus jewellery and gold coins. Bernama reported that MACC deputy chief commissioner Datuk Seri Ahmad Khusairi Yahaya confirmed the arrest, stating the suspect could face charges under the Penal Code and the MACC Act. Ahmad Khusairi said the suspect's attempt to destroy evidence is a serious offence under Section 201 of the Penal Code, punishable by up to seven years ' jail and a fine. However, the main investigation focuses on bribery and corporate liability under Sections 16 and 17A of the MACC Act 2009. — July 19, 2025

Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Deputy Chief Commissioner (Operations) Datuk Seri Ahmad Khusairi Yahaya said investigations revealed that the director, along with several other officers of the state involved, was believed to have received bribes from contractors in exchange for securing projects worth hundreds of thousands of ringgit. 'The investigation was conducted by the MACC's Special Operations Division, and the prosecution will charge the main suspect under Section 165 of the Penal Code involving five charges,' he said at a press conference here today. Ahmad Khusairi said the investigation also led to the seizure and freezing of assets amounting to RM61.3 million involving 79 individual accounts and 16 company accounts. Among the seized assets, he said, were luxury vehicles, cash, and several properties believed to have been acquired through corrupt activities.
