Public advised not to panic over 21-gun salute on Warriors' Day

PUTRAJAYA: Residents in the capital are advised not to be alarmed by the sound of cannon fire this week, as the Malaysian Armed Forces will be conducting ceremonial gun salutes in conjunction with the 2025 Warriors' Day celebration parade. According to district police chief Assistant Commissioner Aidi Sham Mohamed, the Malaysian Armed Forces (ATM) will execute the ceremonial gunfire during both the full dress rehearsal and the main event at Dataran Pahlawan Negara, Precinct 1, here. Two rounds will be fired during the rehearsal on Tuesday, July 29, and 21 rounds on the event day itself, Thursday, July 31. Both sessions are scheduled to begin at 8am. Aidi advised road users to expect congestion along Persiaran Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah, Lebuh Perdana Timur, and the surrounding routes near Complex E from 7am to 10am. He advised the public to plan their journeys early and use alternative routes to avoid any inconvenience. The police will be on-site to manage traffic flow. "Road users are advised to cooperate and follow instructions from the police to ensure the smooth conduct of the parade ceremony," he said in a statement. For enquiries, the public may contact the Putrajaya police hotline at 03-8886 2222 or approach the nearest police station.

Moroccan Scholar Honored for Global Work on Malcolm X's Legacy

Moroccan scholar and Columbia University professor Hisham Aidi has received the prestigious Vanguard Award for his decades-long work preserving and promoting the legacy of Malcolm X. The award was presented by Ilyasah Shabazz — daughter of Malcolm X — and the City of New York on May 19, during a ceremony at the Malcolm X and Betty Shabazz Memorial and Educational Center in Harlem, the site where the civil rights revolutionary was assassinated. Aidi, who also serves as an academic advisor at the center, has spent over thirty years researching Malcolm X's global influence. He has worked closely with the Shabazz family on cultural and educational projects aimed at empowering Harlem youth, including incarcerated and marginalized communities. His contributions include curating a new exhibition tracing Malcolm X's political journey and directing the documentary 'Malcolm X and the Sudanese,' which explores Sudan's influence on the activist's worldview. As lead researcher of the Columbia Malcolm X Project, Aidi has traveled the world collecting testimonies and studying international perceptions of Malcolm X. Recognized for shaping global discourse on justice and equality, Aidi has previously received the American Book Award, the Hip Hop Scholar Award, and the Carnegie Scholar Award. The event's host, academic Marc Lamont Hill, praised Aidi for playing a pivotal role in advancing Malcolm X studies worldwide.

Trio arrested after blocking RTD from seizing overloaded lorries

PUTRAJAYA: Police have arrested three men for allegedly obstructing a Road Transport Department (RTD) officer from carrying out his duties after two sand lorries were caught carrying excess loads. Putrajaya police chief Assistant Commissioner Aidi Sham Mohamed said a police report was lodged on April 9 by the officer involved in the incident. He said the RTD officer had instructed two lorry drivers to bring their vehicles to the Semenyih weighing station after issuing them a notice for overloading offence. However, both drivers allegedly refused to comply. "The case is being investigated under Section 186 of the Penal Code," he said in a statement. Following the report, police arrested three suspects aged between 30 and 40 to assist in the investigation. The arrests were made on April 15 and 17 within the Putrajaya police headquarters compound. "All three suspects have been released on police bail," Aidi said, adding that the investigation papers have been referred to the Deputy Public Prosecutor's Office in Kuala Lumpur and that further instructions are awaited. Yesterday, RTD Enforcement Division senior director Muhammad Kifli Ma Hassan said the incident, which occurred on April 12, involved lorry drivers who allegedly tampered with two severely overloaded tipper trucks, including deflating their tyres, in an attempt to prevent them from being seized by the RTD in Putrajaya earlier this month. The tampering was allegedly done to prevent RTD personnel from seizing the vehicles and towing them to an enforcement station. Overloaded lorries have been reported as a main cause of road damage and a source of safety concerns among road users.
