PHOTO: BLOOMBERG SINGAPORE – President Tharman Shanmugaratnam and Prime Minister Lawrence Wong extended congratulations to newly elected South Korean president Lee Jae-myung on June 5. Mr Lee was elected president in a June 3 snap election, six months to the day after he evaded military cordons to vote against a shock martial law decree imposed by his ousted predecessor. Singapore and the Republic of Korea enjoy substantive and multi-faceted relations, underpinned by robust economic links and strong people-to-people ties, wrote Mr Tharman in his letter. He noted that both countries are 'like-minded partners who cooperate well at multilateral fora and share a similar outlook on key regional and international issues, in particular the need to support free trade, multilateralism, and a rules-based international order'. Mr Tharman said that, with 2025 marking the 50th anniversary of Singapore's diplomatic relations with South Korea, he is confident that these close ties will continue to strengthen with Mr Lee's support and leadership. 'I wish you every success as you assume your new role and take the country forward,' said Mr Tharman, who also extended an invitation to Mr Lee to visit Singapore soon and wished him good health . PM Wong said in his letter that Mr Lee's victory reflected the confidence that the people of South Korea have in his leadership and vision. Also highlighting the close and longstanding friendship that Singapore and South Korea shared, PM Wong noted the strong and multi-faceted cooperation between both countries, including collaboration in new and emerging areas like the digital economy, energy and sustainability, artificial intelligence, start-ups, research and development and food security. 'We are like-minded partners on many regional and international issues, including the importance of a peaceful Korean Peninsula and an open, rules-based international trading system,' said PM Wong. Both countries are set to upgrade relations to a strategic partnership in October, and this also includes timely reviews of the Korea-Singapore Free Trade Agreement and the bilateral Air Services Agreement, said PM Wong, adding that he is looking forward to working with Mr Lee to advance this cooperation. 'I wish you good health and success as you assume office. I look forward to visiting the Republic of Korea later this year to attend the Apec (Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation) Economic Leaders' Meeting, and to make an official visit where we can jointly launch the Republic of Korea-Singapore strategic partnership,' said PM Wong. We don't comment on competitors: Air India on IndiGo-Turkish Airlines codesharing
New Delhi: Air India on Friday said it does not comment on competitors, as a media report claimed that it lobbied the government to cancel IndiGo's lease with state-backed Turkish Airlines. In a statement to IANS, the Tata Group-owned airline denied the allegation. "Air India denies the gross misrepresentation and mischievous reporting on a competitor's business model in certain media outlets," said the airline. "As a responsible corporate, we do not comment on competitors," Air India stated. IndiGo had emphasised that the current arrangement allows Indian and Turkish carriers to operate up to 56 weekly flights under the bilateral Air Services Agreement (ASA). "This arrangement provides multiple benefits to Indian travellers, and the country's economy," the budget airline had said in a statement. It pointed out that this expanded long-haul connectivity has come at a critical time, with global airfare prices rising in the aftermath of the Covid-19 pandemic. "The increased capacity has allowed more affordable international travel for Indian passengers, especially those flying from smaller cities via two-stop connections," according to the low-cost airline. IndiGo also highlighted the broader economic impact of the partnership, noting that the additional flights have created jobs, boosted trade, and increased tax revenues in India. Meanwhile, the stock of Turkish ground-handling firm Celebi Airport Services tanked 10 per cent on Friday after India revoked the security clearance of the company amid calls to ban Turkish businesses, in the wake of their country supporting Pakistan, which harbours terrorism. The stock was under pressure in the past few days amid clamour for action against the Turkish firm.

Turkish Airlines partnership provides multiple benefits to travellers, enhances connectivity: IndiGo
Currently, IndiGo operates direct flights to Istanbul with two leased aircraft from Turkish Airlines having over 500 seats each. It also offers codeshare seats to more than 40 points in Europe and the US. A codeshare partnership allows an airline to book its passengers on its partner carrier and there will be a single ticket. An airline official told PTI that the ongoing air traffic between India and Turkiye needs to be viewed in the context of the bilateral Air Services Agreement (ASA) and the overall construct of international air services to and from India. The ASA allows carriers of Turkiye and India to operate a total of 56 flights per week between the two countries — 14 flights from India to Turkiye and 14 flights from Turkiye to India each by Indian carriers and the same number by airlines of Turkiye. This arrangement with Turkish Airlines provides multiple benefits to Indian travellers, and the country's economy. The additional long-haul capacity has enabled availability of seats for Indian passengers at reasonable airfares, coming at a time when long-haul international airfares have increased substantially owing to the impact of Covid, the official said. According to the official, the operation of the two aircraft to Istanbul serves as a vital engine for economic activity to support trade worth billions of US dollars between the two countries and also helps create numerous job opportunities in India. With the codeshare partnership, international travel has become more accessible and affordable as passengers benefit from cost-effective two-stop flights from India's smaller cities to Europe and the US. 'The codeshare has enabled IndiGo to build its presence in the long-haul markets in Europe and the US, putting in place the foundation for self-sufficiency, i.e. its long-haul foray with the 40 A321 XLR and 30 A350 aircraft ordered by the airline,' the official said. Over 3 lakh Indians visited Turkiye in 2024. Further, the official said the arrangement with Turkish Airlines not only enhances the connectivity of hubs like Delhi and Mumbai but also brings in additional revenue. IndiGo has a fleet of more than 400 planes and operates around 2,200 flights daily. The airline connects over 90 domestic and more than 40 international destinations. It has 10 codeshare partnerships.

Turkish Airlines partnership provides multiple benefits to travellers, enhances connectivity: IndiGo
IndiGo on Thursday said the partnership with Turkish Airlines provides multiple benefits to Indian travellers and the country's economy by enhancing connectivity as well as making international travel more affordable. The comments from the country's largest airline come at a time when there are calls in certain quarters for boycotting Turkish goods and tourism in the wake of Turkiye backing Islamabad and condemning India's recent strikes on terror camps in Pakistan. Some online travel portals and associations have also issued advisories asking people not to visit Turkiye.
