Indian Army Successfully Test-Fires Prithvi-II, Agni-I Ballistic Missiles

In yet another success for indigenous weapons, Indian Army's Strategic Forces Command on Thursday successfully test-fired short-range ballistic missiles - Prithvi-II and Agni-I - from the Integrated Test Range in Chandipur, Odisha. The launches validated all operational and technical parameters, said the Ministry of Defence in a statement. India already has advanced versions of these two missiles. The Indian Air Force and Indian Navy have these weapons in their arsenal. This comes a day after India successfully test fired Akash Prime air defence system in Ladakh. "India has achieved a significant milestone by successfully destroying 2 Aerial High Speed Unmanned targets at high altitude in Ladakh Sector on 16th July by Akash Prime, which is the upgraded variant of Akash Weapon System for the Indian Army," said the Defence Ministry. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh complimented the Indian Army, Defence Research Development Organisation (DRDO), and industry on the remarkable achievement. He described the success as a significant boost to India's Air Defence capabilities, particularly for meeting high-altitude operational requirements. The tests of missiles and air defence systems comes two months after a military conflict between India and Pakistan. The conflict took place between May 6 and May 10. Since then, India has put a renewed focus on boosting its defence preparedness. What Is Ballistic Missile? There are several types of missiles and one of them is ballistic missile. It follows a predetermined, curved (ballistic) path to deliver a warhead or payload to a target. What Is Prithvi-II? Prithvi-II is a short-range ballistic missile developed by DRDO. With a range of 250–350 km, it can carry nuclear or conventional warheads weighing up to 1,000 kg. Powered by a liquid-fueled twin-engine system, it achieves speeds up to Mach 2. What Is Agni-I? Agni-I is a short to medium-range ballistic missile developed by DRDO. It has a range of 700–1,200 km and can carry a 1,000 kg payload, including nuclear or conventional warheads.

High altitude version of Akash air defence missile successfully tested in Ladakh

NEW DELHI: A high altitude variant of the Akash Prime missile, the upgraded variant of the Akash Weapon System for the Indian Army, has been successfully tested, destroying two aerial high speed unmanned targets in Ladakh on Wednesday. The successful validation of the indigenously designed and developed Akash Prime Weapon System was carried out by the Army Air Defence and DRDO, in conjunction with defence PSUs, such as Bharat Dynamics Limited & Bharat Electronics Limited, and other industry partners. The weapon system is customised to operate at an altitude above 4,500 metres (over 14,000 ft) and has the latest upgrades including an indigenously developed radio frequency seeker. The trials were done as part of the First of Production Model (FoPM) firing trial and will further enable timely induction and enhance the air defence potential in high-altitude frontiers of the country. The Ministry of Defence (MoD) on Thursday said, "Based on the operational feedbacks from users, various upgrades are made to improve the operational effectiveness, demonstrating the advantage of the ecosystem created for the indigenous weapon system." This achievement carries added significance as it follows the exceptional performance of India's indigenously developed air defence systems during Operation Sindoor. It marks a major step forward for the nation's missile development programmes, which are now gaining increasing attention in the global defence market.

Tired of too many ads? go ad free now According to a post shared by the Ministry of Defence on X, the Akash Prime system destroyed two high-speed unmanned aerial targets during the trial. "India has achieved a significant milestone by successfully destroying 2 Aerial High Speed Unmanned targets at high altitude in Ladakh Sector on 16th July by Akash Prime, which is the upgraded variant of Akash Weapon System for the ," the ministry said. Akash Prime is expected to be used in the third and fourth regiments of the Akash air defence systems in the Army. The system was also used during Operation Sindoor, where it was involved in preventing aerial attacks by the Pakistan military, which included Chinese aircraft and Turkish drones, as per a report by the news agency ANI. Compared to the existing Akash system, Akash Prime includes an indigenous active Radio Frequency (RF) seeker for improved target accuracy. It also has changes that support reliable use in cold temperatures and high-altitude conditions. A modified ground system from the earlier Akash version has been used in the new system. The system can operate at heights up to 4,500 metres and is capable of targeting objects at a range of around 25 to 30 kilometres.

What is Akashteer & why it's dubbed as ‘hell for Pakistan's air adventures'

'Ground-based Defence Systems integrated with Akashteer made it hell for Pakistan's air adventures,' BEL said. In a post Wednesday on its official 'X' handle, Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) said the system, designed and developed 'in-house', worked in coordination with ground-based defence units to prevent airborne threats from entering Indian airspace. New Delhi: India's indigenous air defence command system Akashteer has emerged into the spotlight for its role in tracking and repelling aerial threats along the western front amid the flare-up with Pakistan last week. Developed jointly by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), and BEL, Akashteer is a fully artificial intelligence-driven Air Defence Control and Reporting System. According to reports, India has become the first non-Western country to integrate autonomous drone swarms, indigenous satellite surveillance and AI-driven battlefield management into a single, real-time air defence platform. Akashteer empowers units on the front lines, enabling dynamic engagement decisions and preventing friendly-fire incidents. @DefProdnIndia @SpokespersonMoD — Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) (@BEL_CorpCom) May 14, 2025 A closer look at the system Mounted on mobile vehicles, the Akashteer system is both flexible and, from threat identification to neutralisation, autonomous. According to BEL, AI is the backbone of the system, enabling real-time processing of vast data inputs to support autonomous target detection, classification, and engagement decisions. This is supplemented by the integrated radar systems, sensors and encrypted communications. Akashteer can direct drone missions that can independently select and coordinate targets mid-flight without operator inputs. Furthermore, the integration of 3D tactical radars, lightweight low-level radars, and the Akash Weapon System ensures rapid response while minimising the risk of friendly fire in contested airspace. As part of India's broader C4ISR (Command, Control, Communications, Computers, Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance) framework, Akashteer is also linked to ISRO satellites and NAVIC (Navigation with Indian Constellation), India's regional navigation satellite system, allowing for enhanced situational coverage and precision. The system offers a real-time unified air picture—the situation in the air, which is then accessible down to the lowest operational units of the Army Air Defence (AD). Unlike conventional systems dependent on active radar signatures and human-triggered responses, Akashteer uses passive tracking to identify low-flying Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) and loitering munitions, reducing its electromagnetic footprint and avoiding early detection. The defence ministry had signed a Rs 1,982 crore contract in March 2023 for the production of 455 Akashteer units with BEL. By November 2024, 107 systems had been delivered, with full deployment expected by March 2027.
