High altitude version of Akash air defence missile successfully tested in Ladakh

NEW DELHI: A high altitude variant of the Akash Prime missile, the upgraded variant of the Akash Weapon System for the Indian Army, has been successfully tested, destroying two aerial high speed unmanned targets in Ladakh on Wednesday.
The successful validation of the indigenously designed and developed Akash Prime Weapon System was carried out by the Army Air Defence and DRDO, in conjunction with defence PSUs, such as Bharat Dynamics Limited & Bharat Electronics Limited, and other industry partners.
The weapon system is customised to operate at an altitude above 4,500 metres (over 14,000 ft) and has the latest upgrades including an indigenously developed radio frequency seeker.
The trials were done as part of the First of Production Model (FoPM) firing trial and will further enable timely induction and enhance the air defence potential in high-altitude frontiers of the country.
The Ministry of Defence (MoD) on Thursday said, "Based on the operational feedbacks from users, various upgrades are made to improve the operational effectiveness, demonstrating the advantage of the ecosystem created for the indigenous weapon system."
This achievement carries added significance as it follows the exceptional performance of India's indigenously developed air defence systems during Operation Sindoor.
It marks a major step forward for the nation's missile development programmes, which are now gaining increasing attention in the global defence market.

GUWAHATI: Charting the path for future warfare, the Indian Army conducted a high-altitude technology demonstration exercise named 'Divya Drishti' in east Sikkim in July 2025, testing cutting-edge systems for battlefield awareness, surveillance, and rapid decision-making. 'On the modern battlefield, the ability to see more, understand quickly, and act fast decides success,' said a statement from the Ministry of Defence, underlining the objectives of the exercise. Troops from the Trishakti Corps deployed a combination of ground-based platforms, UAVs, and drones in realistic operational scenarios to evaluate next-generation capabilities. A major highlight was the integration of Artificial Intelligence-enabled sensors with secure communication networks, ensuring real-time data sharing between frontline units and command centres. This enhanced sensor-to-shooter connectivity enabling faster and more effective responses. Lieutenant General Rakesh Kapoor, Deputy Chief of Army Staff, reviewed the exercise and its outcomes on behalf of Army Headquarters. 'Exercise Divya Drishti has been a great success,' said Lt Gen Zubin A Minwalla, General Officer Commanding, Trishakti Corps. 'We tested future-ready technologies under realistic conditions. The insights gained will shape the Indian Army's future doctrines and tactics, strengthening our ability to operate across all terrains and against any adversary.' The exercise reflects the Army's commitment to technological transformation and self-reliance, aligning with the Atmanirbhar Bharat vision and the Army's Decade of Transformation roadmap, the statement added.

The push to turn India into an air-tight fortress is gaining momentum. After the high-stakes Operation Sindoor, the Centre has accelerated military modernisation with a mega project valued at over Rs 3 lakh crore. Among the headline approvals is a Rs 1.12 lakh crore push to bolster India's air defence capabilities with the indigenous Quick Reaction Surface-to-Air Missile (QRSAM) system. Here's what's changing on the ground. The Ministry of Defence has just greenlit military procurement proposals exceeding Rs 1 lakh crore. These include 12 Mine Counter Measure Vessels (MCMVs) worth Rs 44,000 crore, but the big-ticket item is the Rs 36,000 crore allocated for six regiments of QRSAMs. Out of these, three regiments will be delivered to the Army and Air Force. The QRSAM isn't just any system. It's being called the 'Baby S-400", a nod to its smaller size but strategic importance. Developed by the DRDO, this air defence system can neutralise enemy aircraft, drones, and missiles within a 30 km radius. While that range may seem modest compared to the 400 km reach of the Russian-origin S-400 and the 100–200 km envelope of the Akash system, QRSAM's quick reaction time and battlefield mobility give it a distinct tactical edge. That's where QRSAM steps in. During Operation Sindoor, Pakistan, rattled by India's precision strikes, launched a barrage of drones, reportedly with Chinese and Turkish support. Hundreds were detected. India's Akash systems held the line. Still, experts say the absence of a mobile, quick-launch system like QRSAM was felt sharply. Now, with six regiments approved, the game is shifting. But it's not enough. According to defence officials, the Indian Army had originally asked for 11 QRSAM regiments. The Air Force reportedly had a similar requirement. Meeting both demands would require 22 regiments in total, pegged at a cost of roughly Rs 1.12 lakh crore. That's how the number came into play. Each QRSAM regiment costs about Rs 6,000 crore. While six have been cleared, that leaves a shortfall, one that defence planners say could prove critical if not addressed. Why does it matter? Because India's adversaries, especially China and Pakistan, are investing heavily in stealth drones, cruise missiles, and electronic warfare capabilities. The battlefield is shifting toward high-speed, low-visibility threats. QRSAM fills the gap between long-range missile shields like S-400 and medium-range options like Akash. If fully deployed, QRSAM would add another layer to India's multi-tier air defence strategy, creating a net that could detect and destroy nearly anything from UAVs to 5th-generation fighter jets. This isn't just about defence. It's about deterrence. Special Forces elements may also be included in select formations for sensitive border operations such as along the Line of Control (LoC).Alongside Rudra Brigades, the Indian Army is also raising Bhairav Light Commando Battalions, lean, tactical units intended for quick strikes and rapid border deployment.'We are driven towards becoming a developed, modern and futuristic power. A new brigade is being established, and I approved it yesterday. This will have fighting components like mechanised infantry, armoured units, artillery, special forces with logistic and combat support... With advanced mobility, coordination, and firepower, these formations are intended to deter and respond to threats with speed and are brigade-sized, self-sustaining combat formations, each typically led by a Major General and made up of around 5,000 personnel, larger than traditional brigades but smaller than divisions. These groups combine infantry, armour, artillery, engineers, and support services to prepare for deployment within 12–48 hours in case of Dwivedi earlier said, 'It is basically the restructuring of a particular strike corps. Now, when we look at it, it has some financial implications, and it also has implications in terms of equipping as well as human resources. It has taken a long period, it is in its final stages, and we are hopeful.'Initially, two IBGs were planned, one under the 9 Corps along the western border with Pakistan and another under the 17 Strike Corps facing China.A brigade typically consists of three battalions drawn from arms like infantry, artillery, armour, or engineers. Each brigade includes around 3,000 soldiers and is led by a brigadier. Support units from other arms are attached depending on the role.A division, made up of three brigades, is similarly organised by combat role—such as infantry, armoured, or artillery Army continues to adapt its formations in line with evolving warfare needs. Drone platoons have been integrated into most infantry battalions, and artillery regiments are now supported by loitering munitions under the 'Divyastra' programme.
