We will compel Modi govt to withdraw waqf law: Akbar
Hyderabad: All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen floor leader in the assembly, Akbaruddin Owaisi , on Sunday called upon Muslims to unite in their fight, within the limits of the constitutional provisions, against the new central Waqf Act. He urged them to have complete trust in Allah that they will succeed in compelling the Narendra Modi govt to withdraw the Act, which is not in favour of Muslims. Akbaruddin Owaisi was speaking at a dharna organised by the All India Muslim Personal Law Board at Dharna Chowk near Indira Park against the new waqf law. "They think they can weaken us through this Act, which is aimed at snatching away waqf properties, but we will not allow them to weaken us. Stand shoulder to shoulder and create a wall to face any action taken against us for protesting against the Act. We will raise our voice against injustice and will not part with our shariah, hijab, imaan, and waqf properties. We will continue to extend full support and will participate in every protest programme against the Act, organised by AIMPLB," he said. Referring to verses from the 'Quran', Akbaruddin told the gathering that Allah promises that he tests only those close to him. "We should thank the Almighty for choosing us. Today, 25 crore Muslims in India are going through this test. Have faith in Allah and continue the fight democratically. Allah will give us success. Let's participate in all protest programmes against the Waqf Act under the flag of AIMPLB," he said. AIMIM president and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi, elder brother of Akbaruddin Owaisi, had also participated in the AIMPLB-organised public meeting at Dar-Us-Salam against the Waqf Act on April 19. Presently, Asaduddin Owaisi is part of an all-party delegation to Algeria to expose Pakistan-sponsored terrorism to the world. India has sent several all-party delegations to show its resolve against terrorism and garner international support against Pakistan sponsoring, patronising, and training terrorists.

Hundreds form human chains protesting against Waqf Act
Hyderabad: Hundreds of people formed human chains at various locations across the city on Sunday to oppose the Waqf Amendment Act-2025. The demonstrations organised under the banner 'Save Waqf' witnessed participation from community leaders, activists and concerned citizens. The protest was organised by the All-India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) and All-India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul-Muslimeen (AIMIM). Protesters were seen wearing black armbands as a mark of dissent. AIMIM floor leader and Chandrayangutta MLA Akbaruddin Owaisi joined the protest outside Owaisi Hospital in Santoshnagar, lending his voice gainst the Act and raised slogans like 'Waqf Bachao', 'Dastoor Bachao' and 'Hindustan Zindabad'. Speaking to the gathering, he called the Act 'unconstitutional and unjust', urging the government to withdraw it immediately. A massive human chain was formed at Charminar, attracting attention across the city. Many shop-owners and traders gathered to protest. Charminar MLA Mir Zulfiqar Ali participated. The protesters emphasised that the amendment Act threatens the sanctity and autonomy of Waqf properties, which are meant for community welfare. Protesters gathered in large numbers at Pillar No 212 in Rajendranagar and several other areas. The protests saw political backing from local representatives, with MLAs Majid Hussain (Nampally), Mohd Mubeen (Bahadurpura), Ahmed Balala (Malakpet), Kausar Mohiuddin (Karwan) and Jaffer Hussain Meraj (Yakutpura) protested in their respective constituencies and expressed solidarity with the demonstrators. They criticised the amendments, claiming they infringe on minority rights and Waqf autonomy. AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi and several other residents and shop-owners in the city on April 30 switched off lights of their homes and establishments to join the silent protest against the Act.

BRS, Congress corporators come under pressure
Hyderabad: Are the Congress and BRS corporators in the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) caught between their voters and party leadership? This question arises amid increasing pressure from the saffron party, which has accused both groups of supporting the Majlis candidate in the upcoming local body MLC elections. 'It's easy to dismiss these concerns as typical political rhetoric and simply follow the party line. However, we've seen several banners appearing in the municipal divisions represented by our party corporators. The situation has become complicated, as we feel increasingly scrutinised by the majority of voters in our divisions,' said a BRS corporator. The issue began when banners started to appear over the weekend. These banners, allegedly put up by groups identifying as Hindus and Hindu Bandhus (friends of Hindus), urged corporators not to vote for the AIMIM candidate in the upcoming elections. The banners cited reasons for their appeals, claiming that AIMIM leaders had insulted Hindu gods and goddesses, as well as criticised Hindu festivals and made anti-Hindu political statements. The identities of those responsible for the widespread appearance of the banners remain unknown. However, their messaging aims to raise awareness among voters in various municipal divisions about the perceived anti-Hindu rhetoric of AIMIM Chief Asaduddin Owaisi, who reportedly mocked the Telangana State festival, Bathukamma. This issue is compounded by his brother, MIM MLA Akbaruddin Owaisi's infamous 15-minute speech and a recent anti-Waqf meeting held in the city, which generated further controversy regarding claims made by the State Waqf Board over residential properties in the city. When asked, one Congress corporator stated that he was unaware of any whip issued by his party or, to his knowledge, by the BRS in this election. Consequently, there is a growing sense among corporators that they must respond to the mounting pressure from the majority of voters in their municipal divisions.
