Hundreds form human chains protesting against Waqf Act
Hyderabad: Hundreds of people formed human chains at various locations across the city on Sunday to oppose the Waqf Amendment Act-2025. The demonstrations organised under the banner 'Save Waqf' witnessed participation from community leaders, activists and concerned citizens.
The protest was organised by the All-India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) and All-India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul-Muslimeen (AIMIM). Protesters were seen wearing black armbands as a mark of dissent.
AIMIM floor leader and Chandrayangutta MLA Akbaruddin Owaisi joined the protest outside Owaisi Hospital in Santoshnagar, lending his voice gainst the Act and raised slogans like 'Waqf Bachao', 'Dastoor Bachao' and 'Hindustan Zindabad'. Speaking to the gathering, he called the Act 'unconstitutional and unjust', urging the government to withdraw it immediately.
A massive human chain was formed at Charminar, attracting attention across the city. Many shop-owners and traders gathered to protest. Charminar MLA Mir Zulfiqar Ali participated. The protesters emphasised that the amendment Act threatens the sanctity and autonomy of Waqf properties, which are meant for community welfare.
Protesters gathered in large numbers at Pillar No 212 in Rajendranagar and several other areas. The protests saw political backing from local representatives, with MLAs Majid Hussain (Nampally), Mohd Mubeen (Bahadurpura), Ahmed Balala (Malakpet), Kausar Mohiuddin (Karwan) and Jaffer Hussain Meraj (Yakutpura) protested in their respective constituencies and expressed solidarity with the demonstrators.
They criticised the amendments, claiming they infringe on minority rights and Waqf autonomy.
AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi and several other residents and shop-owners in the city on April 30 switched off lights of their homes and establishments to join the silent protest against the Act.

Minister for denotifying forest land granted before notifying under Section 4 of forest Act
Forest Minister Eshwar Khandre has said the State government will submit a proposal to the Centre and seek denotification of land parcles that were granted for cultivation before they were notified as per Section 4 of the Karnataka Forest Act, 1963. The Minister gave this assurance to elected representatives of the Chikkamagaluru district who met him in Bengaluru on Friday. This measure will help those people who have been cultivating such land for several decades without the rights of ownership. Preliminary step The elected representatives of Chikkamagaluru raised the issue of people who have been cultivating land parcels notified under Section 4. The State government has the power to notify a piece of land as per Section 4 of the Act, which is the preliminary step in declaring a reserved forest. Over the decades, vast tracts of land across the State, including Chikkamagaluru, have been notified under Section 4, but never declared as a reserved forest as per Section 17 of the Act, which is the final step. People who were granted such land before the notification have either cultivated or built houses there over the decades with no rights over the properties. Responding to their pleas, the Minister said the government would approach the Supreme Court with a plea as well in this regard. In several cases, land had been notified under Section 4 of the Act but remained at that stage without completing the process with a final notification as per Section 17. 'Approaching the Centre and the Supreme Court is inevitable, as denotifying such land is impossible as per the provisions of the Forest Conservation Act, 1980,' the Minister said. Buffer zone The elected representatives also opposed notifying 10 km around the sloth bear sanctuary in Arsikere taluk as a buffer zone. The residents of villages in Chikkagmaluru district would be affected by the move, they argued. The Minister said a proposal had been submitted to reduce it to 1 km and the issue would be resolved soon. Legislators T.D. Raje Gowda, H.D. Thammaiah, Nayana Motamma, K.S. Anand, G.H. Srinivas, and senior officers of the Forest Department and Chikkamagluru district administration were present at the meeting.

Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah's political secretary removed amid stampede during RCB victory celebrations

A notification by the Undersecretary (Protocol), Department of Personnel and Administrative Reform (DPAR) said K Govindaraj, Political Secretary to Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has been removed from the post with immediate effect. Congress MLC Govindaraj was appointed as the Political Secretary to the CM on June 1, 2023. The State government is facing flak after a stampede during the RCB's IPL-2025 victory celebrations at Chinnaswamy stadium that claimed 11 lives. Earlier in the day, Union Minister HD Kumaraswamy had accused Govindaraj of putting pressure on the CM to hold RCB victory celebrations. The opposition BJP and JDS leaders are demanding the resignation of CM Siddaramaiah, Deputy CM DK Shivakumar, and Home Minister G Parameshwara. On Thursday, the government suspended five senior officers including Bengaluru City Police Commissioner B Dayanand. Accusing the government of making police officers scapegoats, BJP and JDS leaders said the investigation by CID, magisterial probe, and inquiry by a retired High Court judge would not reveal the truth and justice would not be served to the victims' families. The Congress party high command has to remove Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar, said Kumaraswamy.

Ministry of Minority Affairs launches centralised digital platform for real-time monitoring of Waqf properties
New Delhi Union Minister for Minority Affairs Kiren Rijiju on Friday (June 6, 2025) launched the Unified Waqf Management, Empowerment, Efficiency and Development (UMEED) portal, a centralised digital platform for real-time uploading, verification, and monitoring of Waqf properties. The Minister said the portal will bring about a paradigm shift in administration of Waqf assets by introducing greater transparency, accountability, and public participation. 'The UMEED portal will add a new chapter in the history of Waqf property management and administration in India. It will not only bring transparency but will also help common Muslims, particularly women and children,' said Mr. Rijiju. Developed by the Ministry of Minority Affairs, the UMEED will feature a digital inventory with geo-tagging of all Waqf properties. Other key features include an online grievance redressal system for better responsiveness and integration with GIS mapping and other e-Governance tools, the Ministry said, adding the portal will also provide the public access to verified records and reports related to the Waqf. Terming the portal a historic step, Mr. Rijiju emphasised that the UMEED was more than just a technological upgrade. 'It is a symbol of the government's firm commitment to safeguarding the rights of minority communities and ensuring that community owned Waqf assets are utilised effectively and fairly, for poor Muslims, for whom it was originally meant,' he added. George Kurian, Minister of State for Minority Affairs, said that the portal was a long-awaited reform that will curb misuse and bring Waqf administration closer to the people. 'The system ensures that every property is accounted for and used in accordance with the purpose it was endowed,' he added. Chandra Shekhar Kumar, Secretary of the Ministry, said that he expected the UMEED portal to become the backbone of digital Waqf governance, thereby ensuring that Waqf assets contribute meaningfully to education, healthcare, livelihood generation and social welfare, especially for underprivileged sections within the Muslim community.
