Iraq moves dangerous chemicals from southern port
Shafaq News/ Iraq seized two containers holding hazardous chemicals, Border Ports Authority announced on Wednesday. The authority's spokesperson, Alaa Al-Qaisi, told Shafaq News that the containers were being transferred to a secure holding area in Al-Haddama, near Umm Qasr in southern Basra province. He affirmed the operation was a 'precautionary measure' to remove dual-use chemical substances—classified under maritime hazardous materials codes—away from populated areas. 'Work is ongoing to relocate new shipments with a high-risk classification, specifically those marked as hazard class 2.1,' he noted, adding that containers deemed lower-risk will be moved to designated storage yards under strict supervision and standard safety measures. Al-Qaisi also pointed out that the committee overseeing chemical containers has stressed the need for improved safety procedures in Iraqi ports and the enforcement of environmental and customs regulations. The discovery of these containers has drawn comparisons to previous deadly incidents, including the recent explosion at Iran's Shahid Rajaee port and the 2020 Beirut port blast.

Administrative Court halts dismissal of Baghdad Provincial Council chairman
Shafaq News / On Sunday, the Administrative Court issued an interim order suspending the dismissal procedures against Ammar Al-Qaisi, the Chairman of the Baghdad Provincial Council, effectively reinstating him pending the resolution of a legal case. An official court document, signed by Chief Justice Othman Salman Al-Abboudi on February 9, 2025, stated: "The court decided to suspend the dismissal procedures of Ammar Hussein Mutlaq from his position as Chairman of the Baghdad Provincial Council until the resolution of case number (961/Q/2025) per Articles (151, 152) of the Civil Procedures Law No. (83) of 1969. This decision is subject to appeal before this court." This development follows the council's decision on Thursday to dismiss Al-Qaisi by an absolute majority of its members, citing dissatisfaction with his responses during a questioning session. In a subsequent session on Saturday, the council elected Ammar Al-Hamdani as the new chairman, replacing Al-Qaisi.

Baghdad Council ousts Chairman Al-Qaisi
Shafaq News/ On Thursday, the Baghdad Provincial Council voted to remove its chairman, Ammar Al-Qaisi, after a session in which a majority of members expressed dissatisfaction with his responses during a no-confidence hearing. The council first held a vote on whether Al-Qaisi's responses—submitted in absentia—were sufficient, according to a source. A majority then proceeded to approve Al-Qaisi's removal from office following the vote, officially ending his tenure as chairman of the Baghdad ProvincialCouncil. In the days leading up to his dismissal, reports indicated that Sunni political forces had reached a consensus to nominate Ammar Al-Hamdani as Al-Qaisi's successor. Notably, Al-Qaisi, a member of the Azm Alliance, was elected as the council's chairman in February 2024. He made efforts to reform the Provincial Councils Law to grant higher powers to local councils to prevent 'central interference' and promote sustainable development, emphasizing the necessity of 'developing administrative decentralization to address economic and societal challenges in Iraq.'

Exclusive: Shafaq News unveils details of Mohammed Baqir Al-Sadr's killers
Shafaq News/ A security source revealed, on Friday, detailed information about the killers of religious figure Mohammed Baqir Al-Sadr and his sister. Earlier today, the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces and Prime Minister, Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani, announced the arrest of those responsible for the killing of Al-Sadr, who was executed along with his sister in 1980 by the former regime. According to the source, the executioner, Saadoun Sabri Jamil Jumaa Al-Qaisi, born in 1947, held several significant positions during the former regime, including Director of State Security, Director of Security in Basra and Najaf, Director of Security in Kuwait following its invasion by the former regime, and Director of Economic Security. The source added that Al-Qaisi, known to security forces as "Colonel Zuhair," was also responsible for the massacre of Iraqi merchants during the economic sanctions period. Investigations revealed that "Al-Qaisi and his assistant, Adel Ibrahim Al-Athami, took religious figure Mohammed Baqir Al-Sadr and his sister Bint Al-Huda to the location currently known as Bismayah, south of Baghdad, where they executed them." The source confirmed that A-Qaisi personally carried out the execution of al-Sadr, while al-Athami executed Bint Al-Huda, adding that "Al-Qaisi is the only one who knows the location of her burial." Al-Qaisi fled to Syria after the Baathist regime's fall in 2003, changing his name to "Hajj Saleh," before returning to Iraq and settling in Erbil on February 26, 2023, according to the source. In a post on his X account, Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani emphasized that the capture of Al-Sadr's killers highlights the importance of 'leaving no room for impunity.' Al-Sudani pointed out that, 'the recent achievement of justice through the apprehension of key figures from the criminal repressive apparatus of the Saddam-era Ba'athist regime' reaffirms the steadfast commitment to the relentless pursuit of criminals, 'no matter how long they evade justice.' Mohammed Baqir Al-Sadr is considered one of the most prominent religious, intellectual, and political Shiite figures in modern times, as well as the founder of the Islamic Dawa Party. He was a leading opponent of the regime of former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein.
