Exclusive: Shafaq News unveils details of Mohammed Baqir Al-Sadr's killers
Shafaq News/ A security source revealed, on Friday, detailed information about the killers of religious figure Mohammed Baqir Al-Sadr and his sister.
Earlier today, the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces and Prime Minister, Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani, announced the arrest of those responsible for the killing of Al-Sadr, who was executed along with his sister in 1980 by the former regime.
According to the source, the executioner, Saadoun Sabri Jamil Jumaa Al-Qaisi, born in 1947, held several significant positions during the former regime, including Director of State Security, Director of Security in Basra and Najaf, Director of Security in Kuwait following its invasion by the former regime, and Director of Economic Security.
The source added that Al-Qaisi, known to security forces as "Colonel Zuhair," was also responsible for the massacre of Iraqi merchants during the economic sanctions period.
Investigations revealed that "Al-Qaisi and his assistant, Adel Ibrahim Al-Athami, took religious figure Mohammed Baqir Al-Sadr and his sister Bint Al-Huda to the location currently known as Bismayah, south of Baghdad, where they executed them."
The source confirmed that A-Qaisi personally carried out the execution of al-Sadr, while al-Athami executed Bint Al-Huda, adding that "Al-Qaisi is the only one who knows the location of her burial."
Al-Qaisi fled to Syria after the Baathist regime's fall in 2003, changing his name to "Hajj Saleh," before returning to Iraq and settling in Erbil on February 26, 2023, according to the source.
In a post on his X account, Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani emphasized that the capture of Al-Sadr's killers highlights the importance of 'leaving no room for impunity.'
Al-Sudani pointed out that, 'the recent achievement of justice through the apprehension of key figures from the criminal repressive apparatus of the Saddam-era Ba'athist regime' reaffirms the steadfast commitment to the relentless pursuit of criminals, 'no matter how long they evade justice.'
Mohammed Baqir Al-Sadr is considered one of the most prominent religious, intellectual, and political Shiite figures in modern times, as well as the founder of the Islamic Dawa Party. He was a leading opponent of the regime of former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein.

Trump on Los Angeles protests: Insurrection Act possible
Shafaq News/ US President Donald Trump threatened, on Tuesday, to invoke the Insurrection Act in response to growing protests in Los Angeles sparked by his administration's immigration crackdown. The unrest followed ICE raids targeting undocumented immigrants. Tensions escalated after Trump deployed 2,000 National Guard troops and 700 Marines—moves opposed by California's governor and Los Angeles' mayor. Protesters accused the federal government of violating human rights and undermining the city's sanctuary status. At a White House briefing, Trump was asked if he planned to activate the Insurrection Act of 1792, which allows the president to deploy active-duty troops when local authorities fail to maintain order. 'If there's an insurrection, I would certainly invoke it,' he said, adding that parts of Los Angeles already appeared to meet that threshold. The Defense Department confirmed the troop surge earlier today, describing it as a response to unrest triggered by immigration enforcement. The military presence has fueled fears of potential clashes between federal forces and residents opposed to the crackdown. Trump later defended the move on Truth Social, writing, 'If I didn't SEND IN THE TROOPS the last three nights, that once beautiful and great City would be burning to the ground right now.'

CENTCOM chief: US ready to strike Iran if Trump orders
Shafaq News/ On Tuesday, CENTCOM Commander General Michael Kurilla announced that the United States is prepared to respond with 'overwhelming force' to prevent Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon, if ordered to do so by President Donald Trump. In an address to the Senate Armed Services Committee, Kurilla described the current moment as a 'strategic opportunity' to stop Iran from becoming a nuclear-armed state, confirming that a broad set of plans had been presented to both the president and the secretary of defense to address the Iranian nuclear program. In his final testimony before leaving office, Kurilla labeled Iran's response to the October 7, 2023, Hamas-led attack on Israel as a turning point, accusing it of 'operationalized its entire proxy network and arsenal of standoff capabilities' to advance long-standing strategic aims. He noted that the network includes groups such as Hamas, Hezbollah, and the Houthis, which have suffered major setbacks in recent months. On Yemen, he considered the Houthis as a deeply entrenched force aligned with Tehran, responsible for more than 300 attacks targeting Israeli assets and international shipping lanes, adding that CENTCOM responded with targeted military operations that significantly degraded the group's capabilities, forcing the Houthis to halt maritime assaults.
