Alain Ducasse's Sky-High Restaurant to Close After a Decade Above the Strip

A decade after opening his French Riviera–inspired restaurant 64 floors above the Las Vegas Strip, Alain Ducasse will close Rivea this summer. The final dinner service is set for Sunday, June 22. Ducasse has operated restaurants in that iconic rooftop space for more than 20 years, adapting through two major hotel rebrands. The first, Mix (stylized as miX), opened in 2004 atop what was then the Hotel (stylized as THEhotel) at Mandalay Bay. Mix earned Michelin stars in both 2008 and 2009, back when Michelin still evaluated Las Vegas restaurants, adding to Ducasse's grand total of 21 Michelin stars across his global restaurant empire. In 2014, the Hotel rebranded as Delano Las Vegas, and one year later, Rivea and the adjacent Skyfall Lounge replaced Mix on the 64th floor. Most recently, in December 2024, the hotel rebranded again, this time becoming W Las Vegas under a partnership between MGM Resorts and Marriott International. Rivea's French-style dining spans dishes like mussels in garlicky white wine and herb butter sauce, tender gnocchi with English peas and romanesco, and Maine lobster with fresh linguine and truffle cream. It debuted with a bold design — the lighted 'wave wall' was made of hundreds of glass squares arranged in a pattern meant to evoke the motion of the Mediterranean. But the primary draw has always been the view, which looks out over the Las Vegas Strip. MGM Resorts International confirmed that the Skyfall Lounge, with its balcony views, will remain open and that plans for the now-vacant restaurant space will be announced in the coming months. Whatever takes its place, the views will remain a stellar highlight. Sign up for our newsletter.

Where a wine expert from France eats French food in Hong Kong, plus dim sum and hotpot

Originally from Montpellier, France, Romain Loriot is the founder of Hong Kong bar and online wine retailer ThinkWine. He spoke to Andrew Sun. Advertisement I grew up in Montpellier, in the south of France, next to the sea. I am from a family of classical musicians. My mother taught me to cook not for the love of food, but to get me to be independent. In the beginning, I wanted to be a pastry chef, but I decided to go into wine. My culinary adventure started with French chef-restaurateur Alain Ducasse. I worked for him for eight years, and had the amazing opportunity to come to Hong Kong to open Rech by Alain Ducasse . After two years, I decided to open my own business. My wife is Shanghainese, so we regularly go to Dynasty, Hong Kong (3/F, Renaissance Hong Kong Harbour View Hotel, 1 Harbour Road, Wan Chai. Tel: 2802 8888). I like the Peking duck and dim sum. It is very good. A variety of dishes from Dynasty, Hong Kong. Photo: Dynasty, Hong Kong Megan's Kitchen hotpot with bouillabaisse soup. Photo: SCMP We also love hotpot. We try different places but Megan's Kitchen (5/F, Lucky Centre, 165-171 Wan Chai Road, Wan Chai. Tel: 2866 8305) I am very impressed by. It does a soup with tomato and crab, and a soufflé. The thing is, we always have to have one non-spicy and one spicy soup base. I cannot handle too spicy.

Consulate brings a taste of France to Jeddah

JEDDAH: Gastronomy met diplomacy in Jeddah on Thursday with an evening of fine dining hosted by the French consulate general. The event, held at the consulate, was part of this year's Gout de/Good France. The initiative, launched in 2015 by the French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs and renowned chef Alain Ducasse, aims to promote French cuisine — recognized by UNESCO in 2010 as part of the world's intangible cultural heritage. Consul General of France in Jeddah Mohammed Nehad opened the evening with a speech that highlighted the role of gastronomy in fostering cultural cooperation between his country and Saudi Arabia. The dinner was prepared by chef Jacques Rolancy, a 'Meilleur Ouvrier de France' — the title translates as 'best craftsman.' Rolancy has worked in several Michelin-starred restaurants and is a member of the French Culinary Academy and Association of Master Chefs of France. He is committed to sharing his expertise and preserving the French culinary heritage. He was assisted by Saudi chef Asma Al-Khan, a graduate of Le Cordon Bleu in Paris, who helped prepare the special menu. Al-Khan told Arab News: 'I was observing how the chef worked and honestly, he was impressively fast and precise. I assisted with various tasks in the kitchen and took part in preparing and plating the dishes.' She also explained why she continued to learn about French cuisine. 'I love how they use very minimal spices — often just salt and black pepper. That allows the original flavors of the ingredients, like meat or vegetables, to shine without being overwhelmed by seasoning. You get to taste the true flavor of the food,' she said. The dinner menu featured foie gras escalope, marinated salmon, white radish and candied ginger with a soy vinaigrette. Rolancy told Arab News: 'This dish is one I created 10 years ago. It's one of my signature dishes. I love to travel, discover new ingredients and experiment with how different products can complement each other.' Also served was a traditional French dish of roasted veal fillet with green pea puree, figs, red peppers, strawberries and a touch of wasabi, as well as sliced Camembert — either plain or paired with mashed banana and a sprinkle of cinnamon in a delicate sauce. For dessert, there was a chocolate and coffee tartlet. The event marked Rolancy's second visit to the Kingdom. 'I really enjoyed it. It's a country full of culinary expression and creativity,' he said. 'I tried different Saudi dishes when I was in Riyadh. Some of the spices felt familiar, like cardamom and clove. We use those in French cooking too.' The evening highlighted the excellence of French culinary expertise and strengthened cultural and professional ties with Saudi partners.
