St Mirren edge past Hearts on penalties as Aberdeen ease to victory

St Mirren held their nerve to beat Hearts 5-4 on penalties and reach the Premier Sports Cup quarter-finals. Alex Gogic's acrobatic volley had put the home side ahead after 34 minutes. Hearts – who won both of their opening William Hill Premiership games – improved after the break and were eventually level in the 78th minute when Oisin McEntee headed in from a corner. Neither side was able to find a winner during extra-time, so the tie was settled in a shootout. After Hearts forward Claudio Braga saw his effort saved by Shamal George, Malik Dijksteel converted the decisive spot-kick to send the Buddies through to the last eight. Aberdeen got their first win of the new season with a 3-0 victory at Morton. The Dons – beaten in both of their opening Premiership matches by Hearts and then Celtic – took the lead when Sivert Heltne Nilsen headed in from a corner after 32 minutes. Australia striker Kusini Yengi then swiftly converted from close range to open his account for the Dons and midfielder Leighton Clarkson added a third after being sent clear with 11 minutes left. Lukas Fadinger's goal in extra-time secured Motherwell a 1-0 win at St Johnstone after what had been a tense encounter of few clear chances. Partick beat Championship rivals Ayr 2-0 at Firhill. Thistle – who are bottom of the early table with a point from their opening two league games – went in front after 41 minutes through Daniel O'Reilly's looping header. Logan Chalmers then fired in from 20 yards just before half-time to make sure of a place in the quarter-final draw. Motherwell are still finding a cutting edge, but hopefully fans see what we're doing, says defender

Stephen O'Donnell admits Motherwell are still trying to find their cutting edge, but hopes fans can see what they're trying to do, after drawing 0-0 at St Mirren on Saturday. The Steelmen dominated the first half in Paisley, and though their hosts came into the game more in the second half, they looked comfortable in a 0-0 draw. Ibrahim Said saw a low shot well saved and Tawanda Maswanhise curled a shot round the right post in the first half, while in the second period Saints went closest when Calum Ward was forced to claw an Alex Gogic header over the bar. O'Donnell said: 'It's a tough place to come. Their manager, Stevie Robinson, I've worked with him before, he's really good at his job, he can mix it up, he can be aggressive and he can play, and I think you saw a bit of that from them today. 'I think you could definitely see what we're trying to do. In the first half we did dominate, but maybe lacked creativity – which isn't an issue. 'We all need to build together at the start, and the cherry on the cake is trying to get that final touch. 'You can see what we're doing. We're doing really well, all the players in the forward areas are building with us together, so with a bit more time and work in training, I'm sure that will come right.' O'Donnell added: 'They had a couple of corners in the first half and a wee spell in the second half, but on the whole, they only had a couple of efforts from outside the box. 'So I thought we did really well.' Johnny Koutroumbis went off with an injury in Paisley, and O'Donnell hopes he can recover for their Premier Sports Cup last 16 clash at St Johnstone on Saturday. He said: 'We had a few injuries to key players, it's disappointing to see Johnny Koutroumbis coming off because he's started the season really well. 'But we've got a week before the next game, St Johnstone is going to be tough, and we need to make sure we're ready for it and hopefully get a good result.'

Gogic says St Mirren are ready to bounce back after 'sore' Celtic defeat

St Mirren defender Alex Gogic admits defeat at Celtic Park was "a sore one" but says the squad will "look forward" to their next fixture, and not lick their Mirren defended stoutly for 87 minutes against Celtic, with a Luke McCowan strike that deflected off Buddies' captain Mark O'Hara being the only Saints' rear guard received plenty of plaudits as they frustrated the champions for large periods of the game, very rarely allowing Celtic to create any clear-cut chances."Maybe we could have been better on the ball in the first half", Gogic told BBC Scotland. "But we defended so well, and then to concede with a deflection, maybe it wasn't meant to be.""I think as defenders, we just love defending and we realise that's our first job. We work on it every day. It was a good test for the first game, and I think we did well."And despite an opening-day defeat, Gogic maintains he and his team-mates will take positives from the loss, especially from their defensive added: "You want to play against the best players, and obviously they [Celtic] have some of the best players in the league. When you do well, you're confident after it and you're happy with the work you've done."Next up for St Mirren is a home game against Motherwell. And the Saints defender insists his thoughts will quickly turn to that game and trying to get off the mark this season in the league."The games come quick though, you can't sit and look back."We've got to look forward and we've got a big game coming up, so we need to go and get three points. I think at home we've always been good, we've always played very well and we always want to get three points. We can't wait for the next game."

St Mirren 'rode their luck but deserved a point'

We asked for your views on St Mirren's 1-0 defeat against what some of you said: William: This was a game played by two very good sides and both had the opportunity to make the final result more than one goal. I thought St Mirren at times rode their luck but they certainly deserved a point. Their defending was excellent and a work ethic to give the supporters a great deal of hope in the weeks to come. It was despairing to lose by a late deflected Basically backs to the wall for most of the match, and any attack into Celtic's last line was hampered by lack of control or any incisive penetrative runs. Yes, you can praise the defence with Richard King looking assured, Alex Gogic stoic and resilient, and Jayden Richardson looking better than in the League Cup. What worries from this performance was the failure of our forwards to hold the ball up, to put in the incisive pass or to take the chance when it was offered. We won't be judged on this game alone, but Motherwell, Rangers and Hibs follow close behind in the league and it will be interesting to see where we are after these four A disciplined performance, we rode our luck for sure. Thought we were going to hold on. The Celtic subs made all the difference, I wish James Forrest would retire!

Alex Gogic fully focused on getting St Mirren into Europe after Aberdeen win

The Cypriot international knows the Buddies have the chance to reel in Dundee United with just three games remaining of the season. Alex Gogic maintains St Mirren have targeted back-to-back European campaigns after piling the pressure on Dundee United. The Buddies defensive stalwart helped keep out Aberdeen on Saturday as a 1-0 Premiership win thanks to Mikael Mandron's goal sent the SMiSA Stadium into ecstasy. ‌ While Saints were edging out the Dons, United slumped to a 3-1 loss to Hibernian in Edinburgh. These results set up a crunch showdown on Tayside next Saturday with Stephen Robinson's underdogs taking on Jim Goodwin's troops with five points separating the sides. ‌ And Gogic says his gaffer is adamant the Buddies are not in the top six just to make up the numbers — with the chance of another crack at Europe on every player's mind. The Cypriot international said: 'Europe is the aim. Once we've got to top six, mathematically, it's not over, so we've got to do our best until it's over. I think we were always playing well throughout the season and then obviously now we're getting the reward for it. 'The clean sheet was very important [against Aberdeen]. We defended, I don't know how many corners, but just had so much character. We had Mika hitting the ball in the corner. You know, we defend first and then he gets his goal. 'I think we were always on form, we just couldn't pick up results. We were losing games at the end of the 90th minute and little things we could have got — probably draws — we lost. 'Getting top six for the fans means a lot and then for this game to be nearly a sell-out; it's amazing to hear them. Their support is very good.' French forward Mandron penned a new deal at Saints which sees him extend his love affair in Paisley by another year. He followed up the news by being the hero at the weekend and Gogic says he is delighted to see the striker stay put. The 31-year-old added: 'Fair play to the club. They get him to sign and they offer good contracts to players, trying to keep the squad relatively the same for next year. 'It's a big success for him to sign here for another year. He does the job in both boxes as well. I think he's upped his game, especially in the last two months. 'He's been working on it every single day, holding up the ball, and I think that's very important for us, especially as defenders. If he doesn't hold the ball, we can't squeeze up. But he's become a different player.'
