NFL analyst dubs Raiders $18 million superstar playmaker as underpaid
The Las Vegas Raiders struck gold when they selected tight end Brock Bowers with the No.13 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. Bowers had an excellent rookie campaign and has already established himself as one of the best tight ends in football. Bleacher Report's Alex Kay even believes that the Georgia product is the most underpaid tight end in the league. Advertisement The 21-year-old signed a four-year rookie deal worth $18.1 million with the Raiders after being drafted in 2024. "Bowers may not be handsomely paid quite yet, but don't be surprised when he sets the table for the position with a record-breaking extension as soon as he becomes eligible," Kay wrote. The Raiders' offense was abysmal in 2024, but Bowers was one of the lone bright spots. The 22-year-old played 17 games and led all tight ends in catches (112) and yards (1,194). The 6-foot-4 playmaker was also selected to the Pro Bowl and earned first-team All-Pro nods. With him still being on his rookie contract, Bowers is the 31st-highest-paid tight end in the NFL. However, the superstar pass-catcher will cash in on a historic extension if he continues playing at a high level, so Las Vegas won't have him on a team-friendly contract for the long term. Advertisement Bowers was dynamic last season, but he should be even better in 2025. With Geno Smith now at quarterback instead of Gardner Minshew and Aidan O'Connell, Bowers could unlock the next level of his game and become one of the league's most potent offensive weapons. Patriots Predicted to Cut Ties With Kendrick Bourne
Patriots Predicted to Cut Ties With Kendrick Bourne originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The New England Patriots are facing a difficult challenge of finding enough roster spots for their crowded wide receiver group. According to Bleacher Report's Alex Kay, veteran wide receiver Kendrick Bourne is one player at risk of being cut. Advertisement "With Bourne soon turning 30 and due to make $5.5 million in base salary, New England can part ways with the aging veteran in exchange for $6.3 million in cap relief and a paltry $1.4 million dead cap hit," Kay said. The Patriots have nine receivers competing for limited roster spots, with Bourne sitting among the most vulnerable. The veteran wideout is entering his eighth NFL season, totaling just 305 yards and one touchdown on 28 receptions last year—his least productive season since his rookie campaign. New England Patriots wide receiver Kendrick Bourne (84) celebrates after scoring a touchdown against the Los Angeles Rams during the first half at Gillette Fluharty-Imagn Images According to Kay, Bourne carries a $5.5 million base salary for 2025. Releasing him would offer the Patriots $6.3 million in cap savings with a dead-cap hit of just $1.4 million. That financial benefit, paired with the draft capital spent on more cost-efficient young receivers, makes Bourne an appealing cut candidate. Advertisement Kay also notes that Bourne's experience is beneficial to a younger group, but the Patriots should place more value on upgrading Drake Maye's supporting cast. This leaves room for emerging receivers like Demario Douglas, Kayshon Boutte, and 2025 third‑round pick Kyle Williams to showcase their talent. As training camp approaches, Bourne may need to prove his value to stay on the roster or risk being one of New England's early offseason cap casualties. However, Kay does explain that Bourne could provide value to a team that has needs help and veteran experience in their wide receiver room. Dak Prescott Named In Another Ridiculous Trade Scenario
Dak Prescott Named In Another Ridiculous Trade Scenario originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Many wondered about Dak Prescott's future this time a year ago when the Dallas Cowboys had not yet committed an extension to their franchise quarterback. Their intentions were never truly in doubt though the deal did not get done until hours before the regular season kicked off. Advertisement Coming off an injury that cut his campaign short, Prescott is set to enter the first year of that massive extension. However, people are still convinced the Cowboys want to trade their franchise quarterback. Bleacher Report's Alex Kay warned that the Cowboys could be major sellers ahead of the trade deadline this fall if they start to sputter early in the season. Such a scenario would mean the team moving on from Prescott altogether. "Given how desperate ownership is to make it back to the biggest stage—it's been three decades since Dallas reached the NFC Championship Game, let alone represented the conference on Super Bowl Sunday—and a potential replacement for Prescott waiting in the wings with the recently acquired Joe Milton III, it may not be long before the Cowboys elect to initiate a roster overhaul," Alex Kay wrote. "If Dallas stumbles out of the gate and is well out of contention by mid-October, expect this once-proud organization to start selling off pieces and load up on assets to retool with in the 2026 off-season under another coaching regime." Advertisement For one, it would take an extraordinary failure across the board for the Cowboys to move on entirely from this core and coaching staff after 2025. Writing off Brian Schottenheimer and this group before one game is just plain silly. More importantly, the Cowboys have no plans to move on from Prescott. Despite the huge contract extension and the moves to strengthen this offense, those outside The Star continue to toss this idea around. The Cowboys want to break through and get back to the conference championship and eventually a Super Bowl. Many continue to miss the point that Prescott is their investment to achieve those goals, whether it pays off or not. A trade for Joe Milton does not change that nor should a rough start change that (for now). Advertisement Despite the wish-casting for Dallas to abandon an arguable top-10 quarterback, it's not happening. Prescott remains the center of the franchise moving forward and there is no challenge to status with the team. Analyst Names Buccaneers Third-Round Pick as Potential Cut Candidate
Analyst Names Buccaneers Third-Round Pick as Potential Cut Candidate originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Tampa Bay Buccaneers cornerback Jamel Dean has been a staple in the secondary since being selected No. 94 overall in the third round of the 2019 NFL Draft. Advertisement But that could be changing soon, per Bleacher Report's Alex Kay. Kay believes Dean could be a cut candidate for the team, and it's not just for financial reasons. "Dean conceded a career-high 69.7 percent completion rate in 2024 and allowed a concerning 66.1 percent completion rate the season prior. Those marks are well above the 54.2 percent completion rate he posted over the first four years of his career, meaning it could be time for Tampa to part ways with the soon-to-be 29-year-old," Kay wrote. While the financial incentives are strong, the Buccaneers also have plenty of reason to move on from Dean after landing two potential replacements in Benjamin Morrison and Jacob Parrish on Day 2 of the 2025 draft. Advertisement "A change of scenery could do Dean well. He's still on the right side of 30 and is just over two years removed from signing a sizable extension commensurate with his contributions. Any team lacking veteran depth should be interested in bringing Dean aboard if the Bucs part ways with the corner." Dean is scheduled for a $15.1 million cap hit in 2025 and $15.7 million in 2026 to end his four-year, $52-million deal. That's a lot of money for a guy who might be relegated to a backup role at some point. It's a big decision for general manager Jason Licht, and could be dictated by the performance of some of this year's rookie class. Saints' recently-signed $53M extension ranked among NFL's worst free agency contracts
Saints' recently-signed $53M extension ranked among NFL's worst free agency contracts The New Orleans Saints made a handful of moves in the first wave of free agency, and one in particular has proven to quite divisive. Bleacher Report's Alex Kay recently released a ranking of the four best and four worst contracts of this offseason, so far. Among the four worst, was the three-year, $51 million extension that the Saints handed to defensive end Chase Young. This is what Kay had to say about the assessment: "Even if Chase goes on to post some of his best personal seasons over the next three years, his presence won't result in New Orleans becoming a Super Bowl threat. The team should embrace a rebuild, but signings like this just continue to put off the inevitable." That has been the sentiment for most negative reviews of the Saints' offseason so far. This is a team that is clearly still trying to contend, rather than enter the brutal rebuild that everyone expected. While it is what many fans wanted to see, it does make sense for Mickey Loomis to keep trying to win. His job hasn't been in real peril to this point, but it certainly isn't getting safer with losing seasons. If they keep losing he gets fired and he then has no reason to care about the salary situation. If they win, no one will care about the money and the can will keep getting kicked down the road. As for Young as a player, this seems to be about fair deal for his talents at defensive end. He generated the 12th-most pressures at the position last year, but did only have 5.5 sacks. That seems to be evened out as he now has the 17th-highest yearly salary at that spot. There is a chance that this ends up as a nightmare deal for the Saints, but the more likely result is that he remains somewhere around that fringe-top 15 area at the position.
