Bahrain Reaffirms Strong Commitment to Combating Human Trafficking
On the eve of World Day Against Trafficking in Persons, observed annually on July 30, Bahrain has reiterated its firm commitment to fighting this global crime, which is considered one of the most severe violations of human rights and human dignity. Attorney General Dr. Ali bin Fadhel Al Buainain highlighted that the Public Prosecution plays a central role in the Kingdom's efforts to combat human trafficking. This includes taking effective legal action against offenders and ensuring full legal protection for victims. Bahrain was among the first countries in the region to establish a dedicated prosecution office for human trafficking cases, reflecting the Kingdom's awareness of the unique challenges and complexities of these crimes. Dr. Al Buainain noted that Bahrain operates a comprehensive national framework to combat human trafficking, uniting various government bodies under the National Committee for Combating Trafficking in Persons. This coordinated approach has strengthened the country's performance and institutional cooperation. These efforts have earned Bahrain the top Tier 1 ranking in the U.S. State Department's annual Trafficking in Persons Report for several consecutive years, demonstrating the Kingdom's credibility, seriousness, and leadership in this area. He credited these achievements to the vision of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, who has championed justice, equality, and the protection of human dignity, alongside the continuous support of His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister, in advancing the Kingdom's justice system. Beyond investigations and prosecutions, Bahrain's Public Prosecution actively fosters international cooperation, exchanging knowledge and best practices with other countries, participating in regional and global forums, and contributing to updating legal frameworks in line with international standards. Dr. Al Buainain also stressed the importance of public awareness in preventing human trafficking. He emphasized that an informed society serves as the first line of defense, calling for active roles from the media, educational institutions, and civil society to spread awareness and strengthen a culture of protection and responsibility. He reaffirmed that the Public Prosecution will continue to enhance partnerships with national and international stakeholders, improve early detection methods, and provide full protection for victims—ensuring a safe society where justice prevails and human dignity is preserved.

Public Prosecution Enhances Services for Seniors and People with Disabilities
Bahrain's Public Prosecution has announced new measures to support senior citizens and individuals with disabilities. Chief Prosecutor Nayef Yousif Mahmoud stated that Attorney General Dr. Ali bin Fadhel Al Buainain has issued a new directive focused on expanding accessible services for these groups. The move builds on current special procedures already in place and seeks to offer greater ease during investigations and dealings with the prosecution. 'This decision reflects the Public Prosecution's deep commitment to protecting human dignity and offering fair and equal access to justice for all, especially those who need additional support,' said Mahmoud. He added that the initiative aligns with national efforts to uphold justice and human rights without discrimination. The new decision mandates the Litigants Service Center to enhance its support and guidance for elderly and disabled individuals, making it easier for them to benefit from existing exceptions. Prosecutors and staff have been instructed to simplify investigative procedures to accommodate the unique needs of these individuals, regardless of their legal status in a case. These accommodations include home visits for interviews, or the use of technology for remote questioning in cases where appearing in person is difficult due to age or disability. Investigations involving these individuals will also be given priority to ensure they are completed quickly and efficiently. Additionally, an electronic registry will be established to log all cases involving elderly or disabled persons, tracking each step taken during the legal process. Cases that require further protection or care will be referred to the Witness and Victim Protection Office or the Public Prosecution's 'Raya'a' social initiative, depending on the situation. The decision also calls for periodic reporting and monitoring of these cases to ensure consistent

Bahrain Launches New Guide to Recover Crime-Linked Funds and Enforce Seizure Orders
Bahrain's Attorny General, Dr. Ali bin Fadhel Al Buainain, has issued a new directive to enhance the recovery of assets and enforcement of confiscation orders related to criminal activities. Decision No. (47) of 2025 introduces a detailed guideline for handling requests to recover criminal proceeds and enforce court-ordered asset seizures. This guide was developed in line with international standards, including the recommendations of the Financial Action Task Force (FATF), and in close cooperation with key national entities such as the Ministry of Interior, Ministry of Finance and National Economy, Ministry of Justice, Central Bank of Bahrain, and with approval from the Supreme Judicial Council. The guideline outlines clear legal and procedural steps for reclaiming money and assets gained through criminal acts—whether at the request of Bahraini authorities or from international partners. It also explains how to implement confiscation rulings issued by both local and foreign courts. It highlights the roles of each government body involved in such procedures. Improving Transparency and Cooperation Speaking on the occasion, Deputy Public Prosecutor Wael Rashid Buallay emphasized that the new guide is designed to standardize procedures, promote transparency, and ensure that recovered or seized funds are handled properly. It also aims to protect the rights of innocent third parties and ensures that all steps are taken under proper legal safeguards. He noted that the initiative reflects Bahrain's strong commitment to fighting financial crimes, especially money laundering and terrorism financing, and its belief in the importance of robust international cooperation. A Unified National Effort Buallay praised the efforts of all agencies involved, including the National Policy Committee on Anti-Money Laundering and Terrorism Financing, for their role in crafting a practical and thorough document. The guide is seen as a key step in Bahrain's continuing efforts to track and recover illicit gains and prevent criminals from using cross-border tactics to hide or benefit from illegal wealth.

More People Misusing Social Media In Bahrain – WhatsApp Tops The List
Recent data has revealed a noticeable rise in cases related to the misuse of communication tools especially social media in Bahrain over the past few years. In the last three years alone, the Public Prosecution has handled around 3,683 cases involving the misuse of communication platforms. In 2024, 1,408 cases were filed under the Cybercrime Prosecution, marking a 7% increase compared to 2023 (which saw 1,314 cases), while 2022 had just 961 cases. In response to the growing threat of online offenses, Attorney General Dr. Ali bin Fadhel Al Buainain issued a decision in November 2022 to establish a dedicated Cybercrime Prosecution Unit. The aim was to better keep up with the evolving nature of digital crimes, speed up investigations, and strengthen the handling of digital evidence. More recently, this unit has dealt with a large number of cases where individuals—both citizens and residents—were found to be misusing social media to spread values and behaviors that are considered foreign to Bahraini society. Legal experts and lawyers voiced their support for the steps taken by the Public Prosecution and the Ministry of Interior's Cybercrime Directorate. They also agreed that, as social media usage continues to grow, stricter laws are needed to protect society from its misuse. According to new statistics compiled by Al-Ayam, WhatsApp was involved in over half of all social media abuse cases handled since 2022. Out of 2,521 total cases related to social media misuse during this period, 1,321 were linked to WhatsApp, accounting for 52% of the total. In second place was Instagram, with 605 cases (24%). TikTok came in third with 181 cases, followed by Facebook (163 cases), and X (formerly Twitter) with just 65 cases.
