Ridley Scott Says He's 'Done Enough' With Alien but Hopes for the Franchise's Future — GeekTyrant

Ridley Scott, the mastermind behind the original Alien , has officially made it clear that he's done with the franchise. After years of shaping the iconic sci-fi universe, Scott's focus now shifts to what lies ahead for the franchise, just not with him behind the director's chair. The 87-year-old filmmaker recently shared his thoughts with ScreenRant, confirming that, while he's still invested in the Alien universe, he's 'done enough' with the series and won't be returning to direct another installment. Reflecting on the Alien franchise's evolution, Scott admitted that after Alien Resurrection (1997), the series lost its spark. "I think I felt it was deadened after 4. I think mine was pretty damn good, and I think [James Cameron's] was good, and I have to say the rest were not very good. And I thought, 'F—, that's the end of a franchise which should be as important as bloody Star Trek or Star Wars,' which I think is phenomenal." Scott even drew a comparison to 2001: A Space Odyssey , acknowledging the monumental significance of the first Alien movie in shaping the sci-fi genre. It's hard to believe now, but when Scott took on Alien back in 1979, it wasn't a guaranteed hit. The studio wasn't even keen on having him direct. "A number of years after, I said, 'I'm going to resurrect this,' [and wrote] Prometheus from scratch—a blank sheet of paper. Damon Lindelof and I hammered out Prometheus. It was very present and very welcome. The audience really wanted more.' This revival continued with Alien: Covenant (2017), which Scott also helmed, though he now feels that he's done all he can for the franchise. So what does Scott hope for the future of Alien? Though he won't be back to direct, his hopes remain high for the direction the series will take. 'Where it's going now, I think I've done enough, and I just hope it goes further.' With the reaction that Alien: Romulus got, which he produced, it seems the series is still generating real excitement again. Fans have even more to look forward to with the upcoming streaming series Alien: Earth , which premieres on Hulu on August 12th. Scott is an executive producer on the series. While there were earlier reports suggesting Scott might develop another prequel movie, his recent comments leave us uncertain about the project's status. Whether it's scrapped or merely not in his directorial future, Scott's remarks suggest the direction of the franchise will now be in the hands of others.

'Alien' Movies, Ranked from Worst to Best

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Entertainment gossip and news from Newsweek's network of contributors We're learning more and more about the upcoming Hulu TV series "Alien: Earth - not to mention news of a follow-up to "Alien: Romulus" in development. We thought it was about time to go back and offer up our opinions of how to rank the "Alien" films. Read More: George Lucas Finally Explains Why Yoda Speaks Backwards Not counting the "Alien Vs. Predator" entries since they're non-canonical to either franchise, here's our choices for the "Alien" movies from worst to best. 7. 'Alien Resurrection' (1997) "Alien Resurrection" "Alien Resurrection" 20th Century Studios It's as if someone at the studio challenged the filmmakers to somehow make an "Alien" movie that felt more goofy than scary, and everyone rose to the challenge. There are some fun parts of "Alien Resurrection", but nothing saves it; particularly not the grotesque alien/human hybrid that Sigourney Weaver's Ripley clone treats like a lost puppy. 6. 'Alien: Covenant' (2017) "Alien: Covenant" "Alien: Covenant" 20th Century Studios Ridley Scott's "Alien" prequel trilogy never got finished, and when you see "Alien: Covenant", the second part of the unfinished trilogy, not only do you realize why, but you don't feel any kind of regret for the absence. As a standalone "Alien" film, "Covenant" is exceptionally okay. But it didn't bring enough new sauce to the recipe to justify another go-around. 5. 'Prometheus' (2012) "Prometheus" "Prometheus" 20th Century Studios What do you do when you want to launch a research expedition to another part of the galaxy that will take an enormous amount of time and resources? Well, apparently, you find the absolute dumbest group of scientists in the history of mankind and pay them a ton of money to make the kinds of mistakes you would expect them to avoid, even if they were drunk enough to pass out any minute. 4. 'Alien 3' (1992) "Alien 3" "Alien 3" 20th Century Studios There's a lot to like about "Alien 3" in spite of its flaws. After the action-heavy "Aliens", it managed to recapture the creeping horror of "Alien". But many fans will never forgive the sin of killing off Hudson and Newt during the opening credits, and they shouldn't. 3. 'Alien: Romulus' (2024) "Alien: Romulus" "Alien: Romulus" 20th Century Studios Fede Alvarez struck gold with this bloody standalone. It made a huge misstep in its digital "resurrection" of Ian Holm, but otherwise manages to deliver the best entry in the series we've seen in the 21st century. 2. 'Aliens' (1986) "Aliens" "Aliens" 20th Century Studios "Aliens" is, in many ways, the perfect example of how to make a sequel. It takes the look, the feel, and the mythology established in the first film and builds solidly upon it without forgetting anything. It isn't quite as scary as its predecessor, but it makes up for the toned-down horror with a fun layer of action. 1. 'Alien' (1979) "Alien" "Alien" 20th Century Studios "Alien" remains the gold standard in the franchise. With practical special effects that still stand up today, "Alien" is still the most terrifying film in the franchise. We wouldn't go so far as to say it's worthless to keep making movies, but it's doubtful anyone will make one as scary as Ridley Scott's modern classic. Tory leader Kemi Badenoch gets financial boost as video game tycoon donates £2million to Conservative Party

A British video game tycoon has given a £2million donation to the Tory party. The money from Jeremy Elliott, who is better known as Jez San, will give a huge boost to Kemi Badenoch 's leadership, just days before challenging local elections. I can disclose that Mr San, who founded Argonaut Software in his bedroom as a teenager during the early 1980s computer boom, gave £1million in February. He then gave a second surprise £1million earlier this month. He is the biggest donor to Tory funds since Mrs Badenoch became party leader in November. Mr San used to be a Labour supporter, but turned against Keir Starmer after the record £40billion tax-raising Autumn Budget. His Argonaut company produced the Harry Potter, Alien Resurrection and Star Fox hit console games. It was also instrumental in developing early 3D graphics technologies, including the SuperFX chip used by Nintendo. Mr San, 59, and his wife Natasha had dinner with Mrs Badenoch and her husband Hamish, who works in the City. They bonded over the Tory leader's pledge to cut regulation, taxes and to try to ensure Britain develops maximum potential from AI. Computer games have been kind to Mr San. In 2022 he bought Palazzo di Vista, a £40million mansion in Los Angeles where his neighbours include Jennifer Aniston, Beyonce and Elon Musk. He's also a major donor to Great Ormond Street children's hospital. Like most of his competitors, Mr San was an early computer user. He was 12 when his father brought back from the US a TRS-80, a forerunner of today's PCs. But his parents and teachers were far from encouraging. In a rare interview, he said: 'Everyone thought it was a terrible influence. I was staying up all night, every night. 'It's a while since I've seen the sunrise after working all night, but at school it happened all the time. I was hacking before it was made illegal, but never since.' He was only 16 when the money started to roll in. 'Some friends and I wrote a game called Skyline Attack,' he says. 'My share of the profits bought a second-hand Volkswagen Scirocco GTi. Computers have given me a great new car about every 18 months since.' Starting from a Saturday job at a computer shop in Edgware, north-west London, less than a mile from Argonaut's offices, he now employs hundreds globally. Mrs Badenoch told me: 'I was delighted to meet Jez San, who is one of our great entrepreneurs and innovators. His donations are an important statement of support in the Conservative Party to lead Britain out of the current economic malaise.' A source close to Mr San told me: 'Jez does not believe you can tax your way to growth. He has huge concerns over Labour's tax-heavy approach, which is driving top talent and investors abroad. 'He will offer policy advice to the Tories to help champion high-growth sectors and reward homegrown innovation. He believes you have to reward risk takers.' The revelation of the donations comes at the end of a strong week for Mrs Badenoch who had her best performance at the despatch box at Prime Minister's Questions this week when she mocked Sir Keir's U-turn on the definition of woman in the aftermath of the landmark ruling by the Supreme Court.
