Manitowoc surveying public about future of Henry Schuette Park playground
MANITOWOC – The city of Manitowoc is looking for public opinions on Henry Schuette Park playground and what people would like to see there in the future. The survey will contribute to the city's development of a master plan for the future of the playground. The current equipment was installed in 2002 and is aging. Wisconsin Maritime Museum to honor Manitowoc-made USS Lagarto in remembrance ceremony
MANITOWOC – Wisconsin Maritime Museum will host a public ceremony to mark the 80th anniversary of the loss of USS Lagarto, a submarine built in Manitowoc during World War II, and the 20th anniversary of the submarine's discovery. "The tribute honors the 86-man crew who were lost on May 3, 1945, during Lagarto's second war patrol in the Pacific," the news release from Wisconsin Maritime Museum said. The ceremony will take place at 1 p.m. May 3 and include patriotic music, a reading of the names of the lost crew, a flower placement and the tolling of a memorial bell. Lagarto was the 21st of 28 submarines built in Manitowoc during World War II. The keel was laid on Jan. 12, 1944. She was launched on May 28, 1944, and was commissioned Oct. 14, 1944. The submarine made two war patrols, during which she sank a Japanese submarine. Lagarto was ultimately sunk by the Japanese minelayer Hatsutaka in the Gulf of Thailand, a ship that had also depth-charged USS Cobia, according to the Wisconsin Maritime Museum. The Hatsutaka was later sunk by USS Hawkbill, a fellow Manitowoc-built submarine. The Wisconsin Maritime Museum collaborated with professional divers to study the site and spent more than a decade locating and connecting with the families of the lost crew. Manitowoc historical society to join national commemoration of Paul Revere's ride of 1775
MANITOWOC – Manitowoc County Historical Society is taking part in a national initiative to display two lights in commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the United States' founding. A declaration from the Historical Society states the importance of "reminding our citizens of the vital significance and relevance of our founding principles and ideals that created a unique national identity worth fighting for." The Two Lights For Tomorrow initiative commemorates the ride of Paul Revere in 1775 to warn of impending action by the British army. Manitowoc police arrest man after he brandishes gun during fight in YMCA parking lot
MANITOWOC – A 49-year-old man was arrested Tuesday at Manitowoc-Two Rivers YMCA after police say he brandished a loaded gun during a fight in the parking lot. According to the arrest record, the man and a companion got into a "shoving fight" with two other people in the YMCA's parking lot, most of which was recorded with security cameras. The Manitowoc Police Department was called by at least two bystanders, one of whom told police they heard several men in the parking lot say "drop the pistol," according to the arrest record. More news: Manitowoc Public School District awarded grant to create recovery high school The arrest record states security footage showed the man in the parking lot having an altercation with another man, with several people watching. After a period of yelling and some physical interactions, like pointing in each other's faces, slapping hands away and pushing on each other's chests, the 49-year-old man reached down to his hip where he had concealed a handgun. A bystander then approached and tried to get the two men to separate, after which the 49-year-old man put his gun back into his waistband and walked away from the fight and to his car. After the initial round of searching the participants and interviewing them, police searched the man's vehicle for the gun, which they found in the glove compartment. The man was arrested and police are recommending charges of first-degree recklessly endangering safety and disorderly conduct. Charges have not yet been filed in the Manitowoc County Circuit Court. Manitowoc police arrest 38-year-old man after finding drugs under loose panel in his vehicle
MANITOWOC – Manitowoc police officers found methamphetamine in a vehicle during a traffic stop Monday. At 5:15 p.m. March 10, the officers stopped a vehicle for illegal window tint and loud music, according to the arrest record. During the course of the traffic stop, the vehicle's driver, a 38-year-old man, stepped away from the vehicle. K-9 Riley was brought out to sniff around the vehicle and alerted to the presence of drugs, causing the officers to initiate a full-vehicle search. More news: Manitowoc police looking for information about dog in biting incident near Lower Schuette During the search, one officer noticed a loose panel under the radio. They pulled on the panel and uncovered an opening where two cloth bags had been hidden. In those bags, they found two plastic bags with methamphetamine in them, two small "gem bags" that also contained methamphetamine, a larger empty bag that looked like it was used to transport a larger amount of the drug, and a digital scale. When officers weighed the amount of methamphetamine found, it was almost 40 grams, which is above "normal user amounts," according to the arrest record. Manitowoc police are recommending the man be charged with felony possession of methamphetamine with intent to deliver, misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia, felony bail jumping and misdemeanor bail jumping. Charges have not yet been filed in the Manitowoc County Circuit Court. The Herald Times Reporter does not name suspects until they have been charged.
