PVL: Chen Tagaod delivers clutch aces as Akari sweeps Petro Gazz for QF berth

Chen Tagaod torched Petro Gazz from the service line as Akari completed a hard-fought 32-30, 25-22, 25-19 win in the 2025 Premier Volleyball League (PVL) On Tour knockout round on Tuesday at the PhilSports Arena. The rookie outside spiker out of Far Eastern University delivered four of the Chargers' last five points, highlighted by three huge aces in a row, as they advanced to the quarterfinals where they will go up against Cignal. Tagaod's heroics sealed Akari's gritty straight-sets victory. Both teams figured in an extended Set 1 with the Angels, the reigning All-Filipino Conference champions, forcing a 30-all deadlock on a power kill from Myla Pablo. But Ivy Lacsina came up with two straight attacks from the left wing to close out the opening frame, 32-30. Akari once again raced to an early lead in Set 2 with Ezra Madrigal returning an overpass from Petro Gazz for a 23-18 cushion before Petro Gazz answered with a 4-1 rampage to trim the gap to two, 22-24. Grethcel Soltones then unleashed one from the left side and used the hands of Joy Dacoron to secure a check-out point, sending Akari to a commanding 2-0 set lead. Akari clinched an early 10-5 lead in the third frame before Petro Gazz responded with a 9-2 blast that swung the lead into their favor, 14-12. But Soltones, Tagaod, and Eli Soyud fueled the finishing touches with Soyud unloading a hammer from the opposite side before a Pablo attack error made it a 20-17 lead for Akari. Petro Gazz retaliated with two points in a row but Tagaod came alive, attacking from the left wing before serving up three straight aces to deliver the match point at 24-19. Soltones punctated the sweep, completing a cross court attack and eliminating the Angels from contention. —JMB, GMA Integrated News

PLDT, Farm Fresh sweep Ilagan leg to lead PVL On Tour group

PLDT and Farm Fresh remained atop their group after defeating Choco Mucho and Petro Gazz, respectively, to complete sweeps of their Ilagan leg assignment in the 2025 PVL On Tour on Sunday. The High Speed Hitters overcame a third set collapse to pull off a 25-22, 25-16, 22-25, 25-17 against the struggling Flying Titans while the Foxies stunned the Angels with a 25-23, 25-21, 25-23 victory at the Capital Arena in Ilagan, Isabela. Five PLDT players reached double-digit scoring as Kim Kianna Dy and Jovie Prado each churned out 15 points with the latter grabbing 13 receptions while Majoy Baron and Kiesha Bedonia chipped in 14 markers each. Mika Reyes chimed in with 10 points as PLDT soared to a 3-0 start in Pool A. With the win, the High Speed Hitters inched closer to a quarterfinals spot. Meanwhile, Farm Fresh leaned on the troika of Trisha Tubu, Jolina Dela Cruz, and Caitlyn Viray in shocking the reigning All-Filipino Conference champions Angels. Tubu top-scored with 15 points while Dela Cruz and Viray each posted 12 markers with the latter displaying her versatility after collecting five digs and six receptions as they improved to 2-1. The loss, however, spoiled the 18-point outing of veteran Myla Pablo as Petro Gazz slipped to a 1-3 start. —JMB, GMA Integrated News

PLDT makes quick work of Petro Gazz to continue unbeaten PVL on Tour start

PLDT's veterans presided over the High Speed Hitters' dominant 25-22, 25-15, 25-16 win against an incomplete Petro Gazz squad to remain undefeated so far in the PVL On Tour on Saturday in Ilagan City. Majoy Baron and Jovelyn Prado fronted the offense with 12 points apiece with the latter also grabbing 13 receptions while Kim Kianna Dy chipped in 10 markers as they improved to 2-0. The Angels, who are still without Alas Pilipinas members Brooke Van Sickle and MJ Phillips, turned to Myla Pablo as the veteran spiker posted 16 points. It was, however, not enough as the reigning All-Filipino Conference champions slipped to 1-2. "Syempre 'pag ang kalaban mo ay mga top teams like Petro, happy na nakukuha namin 'yung panalo. Happy kami na nakapag-perform lahat," PLDT head coach Rald Ricafort said. PLDT broke from a slim 12-11 lead and turned it into a huge 20-14 lead in Set 3 after Baron and Dy both took advantage of back-to-back overpasses from Petro Gazz. Baron then denied Jonah Sabete on the opposite side for a 23-15 cushion before Pablo tried to breathe some life to the Angels with another kill from the left side, 23-16. But Baron was just unstoppable at the net, delivering the finishing kick with two consecutive quick plays that sealed it for PLDT. —JMB, GMA Integrated News

(Photo: PVL) Lyann De Guzman proved her impressive debut outing was no fluke, steering Nxled to yet another upset with a 25-20, 26-28, 27-25, 25-22 win against Choco Mucho in the PVL On Tour on Sunday in Batangas City. The star rookie poured in 24 points anchored on 20 attacks, three aces, and one block laced with nine digs and 12 receptions as the Chameleons went off to a hot 2-0 start. The Flying Titans, meanwhile, dropped to an even 1-1 card. "It was a collective effort from everyone, whoever is inside alam namin na maaasahan and everyone wanted to win," team captain Chiara Permentilla said in the post-game press conference. A rejection on De Guzman by veteran Choco Mucho spiker Honey Royse Tubino put the Flying Titans in the front seat as they took a slim 22-21 lead in the crucial fourth set. But Aduke Ogunsanya went short on her serve that promoted a 4-0 closing run by Nxled, who was coming off a stunning victory against the reigning All-Filipino Conference champion Petro Gazz yesterday. Another rookie in Mayang Nuique denied Isa Molde in the left side before Permentilla sent the Chameleons to the match point by unleashing a strong kill of her own, 24-22. De Guzman then unloaded an ace to cap off yet another stellar outing from her. Permentilla churned out 19 points on 15 attacks, three blocks, and one ace while Jovelyn Fernandez chipped in 14 markers. —JKC, GMA Integrated News

Petro Gazz bounces back with sweep win vs. Galeries

Less than 24 hours removed from a tough loss in its opener, Petro Gazz made sure to get the job done this time around after blanking Galeries, 25-23, 25-21, 26-24, to barge into the win column of PVL On Tour on Sunday in Batangas City. The Angels bounced back from a heartbreaking five-set defeat against a rejigged Nxled yesterday to improve to 1-1 while the High Risers slipped to a 0-2 hole in Pool A. A Jonah Sabete attack from the left side saw the reigning All-Filipino Conference champions taking an 18-16 lead in Set 3 before rookie Jean Asis continued to flaunt her brilliance by serving an ace to tie things up at 18-all. Roselle Baliton then denied Joy Dacoron on the quick play to force another deadlock at 20-all, but they had to hold their breath after libero Blove Barbon went down with an apparent injury. That, however, only motivated Galeries, unleashing a 3-0 run led by Jewel Encarnacion as the wards of head coach Lerma Giron moved two points away from extending the match. But Petro Gazz showed off its championship poise with Nicole Tiamzon coming up clutch, rejecting Ysa Jimenez on the opposite side before hitting it off the hands of Baliton to fuel a 4-0 rampage, 24-23. Encarnacion would level it again at 24-all, but a service serror from her and another Tiamzon attack sealed the sweep victory for the Angels. —JKC, GMA Integrated News
