PLDT, Farm Fresh sweep Ilagan leg to lead PVL On Tour group
The High Speed Hitters overcame a third set collapse to pull off a 25-22, 25-16, 22-25, 25-17 against the struggling Flying Titans while the Foxies stunned the Angels with a 25-23, 25-21, 25-23 victory at the Capital Arena in Ilagan, Isabela.
Five PLDT players reached double-digit scoring as Kim Kianna Dy and Jovie Prado each churned out 15 points with the latter grabbing 13 receptions while Majoy Baron and Kiesha Bedonia chipped in 14 markers each. Mika Reyes chimed in with 10 points as PLDT soared to a 3-0 start in Pool A.
With the win, the High Speed Hitters inched closer to a quarterfinals spot.
Meanwhile, Farm Fresh leaned on the troika of Trisha Tubu, Jolina Dela Cruz, and Caitlyn Viray in shocking the reigning All-Filipino Conference champions Angels.
Tubu top-scored with 15 points while Dela Cruz and Viray each posted 12 markers with the latter displaying her versatility after collecting five digs and six receptions as they improved to 2-1.
The loss, however, spoiled the 18-point outing of veteran Myla Pablo as Petro Gazz slipped to a 1-3 start.

Coco Gauff overcomes 23 double faults to win in Montreal
Jul 29, 2025; Montreal, QC, Canada; Coco Gauff (USA) serves against Danielle Collins (USA) in second round play at IGA Stadium. (Photo: Eric Bolte-Imagn Images/REUTERS) Top-seeded Coco Gauff survived an error-laden second-round test from Danielle Collins, prevailing 7-5, 4-6, 7-6 (2) in an all-U.S. matchup at the Omnium Banque Nationale on Tuesday in Montreal. Gauff, who won the French Open last month for her second Grand Slam title, overcame a whopping 23 double faults. She served only three aces, though one came on her match point in the third-set tiebreaker. Collins' success ratio in that category wasn't much better, as she had two aces and 13 double faults. Both players converted nine of their 16 break-point opportunities. "I was practicing well and I don't think I transferred it today, but hopefully I got my bad match of the tournament out of the way," Gauff said. Regarding her double-fault total and her 74 unforced errors, Gauff said, "Maybe if I cut that in half, it would be a quicker match for me. ... Danielle is a great ball-striker, and for me to break her as many times as I did, there's definitely some positives to take from today." Gauff advances to a third-round match against Russia's Veronika Kudermetova, who topped 29th-seeded Olga Danilovic of Serbia 6-4, 6-2. Earlier Tuesday, Aoi Ito of Japan completed a stunning comeback to eliminate Italian No. 7 seed Jasmine Paolini, and hometown favorite Leylah Fernandez also experienced an early exit. Ito, ranked No. 110 in the world, was down a set and a break before charging back to upset Paolini 2-6, 7-5, 7-6 (5) in second-round action. Ito trailed 4-1 in the second set before coming back to tie the score; she saved one match point in the 10th game on her way to forcing the third set. Ito controlled most of the third set before Paolini forced the tiebreaker. The Italian held several one-point leads in the back-and-forth tiebreaker but Ito came back from down 5-4 to record the final three points of the match. Ito, 21, had not won a tour-level match all season until beating Katie Volynets in the first round Sunday. That made it even more shocking that she could oust Paolini, who already has two WTA 1000 titles under her belt this year in Qatar and Italy. Ito won despite committing 11 double faults. She converted 7 of 10 break points against Paolini while saving 11 of the 19 break points she faced. As for Fernandez, she never held a lead in a 6-4, 6-1 first-round defeat to Australian Maya Joint. Fernandez had beaten Joint in the first round of last week's WTA 500 event in Washington, D.C., where the Canadian went on to capture the biggest title of her career. It was not a banner day for the Canadian contingent. No. 8 seed Emma Navarro breezed past Canada's Rebecca Marino 6-1, 6-2 in 63 minutes. Bianca Andreescu, meanwhile, withdrew due to a foot injury, allowing a walkover for fourth seed Mirra Andreeva of Russia. The Ontario native was the 2019 Canadian Open and U.S. Open champion. In another first-round match, Caty McNally battled past fellow American Alycia Parks 6-4, 5-7, 7-6 (7). McNally fell behind 3-0 in the third-set tiebreaker and saved two match points before she pulled in front. Other Round of 64 winners included No. 9 seed Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan; No. 15 Daria Kasatkina of Australia; No. 24 Marta Kostyuk and No. 30 Dayana Yastremska, both of Ukraine; Russia's Anna Kalinskaya; Spain's Jessica Bouzas Maneiro; Romania's Jaqueline Cristian; the Czech Republic's Marie Bouzkova; China's Lin Zhu; and the Netherlands' Suzan Lamens. In the last match of the night, Canada's Victoria Mboko upset 23rd-seeded Sofia Kenin of the United States 6-2, 6-3. --Field Level Media/Reuters

Petro Gazz repulses Choco Mucho, snaps skid in PVL On Tour
Petro Gazz showed no rust from a lengthy break, bucking a slow start to complete a 20-25, 25-19, 26-24, 25-17 win against Choco Mucho in the 2025 PVL On Tour on Tuesday at the Candon City Arena. The Angels, who were reeling from back-to-back losses to PLDT and Farm Fresh, erased an early deficit in Set 4 by unleashing a 14-3 closing run as they headed to the knockout round with a 2-3 card. The Flying Titans, meanwhile, absorbed their fourth straight loss to go 1-4 in Pool A. Myla Pablo carried the scoring cudgels as she posted a game-high 23 points anchored on 19 attacks, three blocks, and one ace to go with 16 receptions while another veteran in Nicole Tiamzon churned out 16 markers and 12 digs in Petro Gazz' first game since the departure of Japanese head coach Koji Tsuzurabara. With deputy coach Brian Esquibel calling the shots, the Angels made sure to deliver as they erased an early 11-14 deficit in Set 4, unleashing a valiant 9-1 rampage fueled by the Pablo, Ranya Musa, and seldom-used Antonette Adolfo as they built a 20-15 cushion. Choco Mucho answered with two consecutive points from a running kill from Jen Villegas and a Honey Royse Tubino rejection on Adolfo that sliced the gap to three, 17-20. But Pablo proved to be clutch, unleashing a kill from the left wing before serving up an ace to instigate a 5-0 game-sealing blast. It was also Pablo's back row kill that punctuated the four-set victory for the Angels. The loss spoiled a 17-point outing from Cherry Nunag, who had 11 attacks, four blocks, and two aces. —JMB, GMA Integrated News

Cheers! San Miguel's Tiongson, Cahilig, Rosales, Calma celebrate first PBA title
It took them a while, but finally, they can call themselves PBA champions. Last Friday, Juami Tiongson, Andreas Cahilig, Kris Rosales, and JM Calma relished their first title as the San Miguel Beermen defeated TNT in Game 6 of the PBA Philippine Cup finals. Tiongson, Cahilig, and Rosales have been in the PBA for quite a while. Tiongson was drafted in 2014, while Rosales made his PBA debut in 2016. Cahilig, meanwhile, entered the league in 2017. "It means more to me. Obviously, with everything I went through in my career. Baka nung nag-start ang career ko, nawala ako sa PBA," Tiongson said. "I made it back and glory to God, and hopefully, win more championships," he added. ? Cahilig, who was also Tiongson's teammate back in Terrafirma, echoed the same sentiment. "It feels very good, I'm very happy. It's been a hard couple of years but it finally paid out," he said. Although Cahilig was able to play in two games only because of his hyperextended knee, the Filipino-Swedish big man said he is now more motivated after winning his first title. "I'm very hungry to play in the finals again," he added. "There's a lot of stuff that I did behind the scenes to get to this point and for me to get this, it really means a lot," Rosales said, especially after revealing he almost retired during the pandemic. "It's really dear to my heart and hopefully I can get some more." ? Kris Rosales, also a first time champion @gmasportsph — JK Carandang (@jk_carandang) July 25, 2025 Calma, while relatively new in the league being drafted in 2022, said this is the first trophy in his career. Thank you sa San Miguel, binigyan ako ng opportunity para mag-champion." ?
