Agriculture has long been woven into the fabric of life in NI, forming the backbone of rural communities and local economies

Today's farmers are facing an increasingly complex set of challenges — from climate change and rising input costs to labour shortages, environmental regulations, and shifting market demands. Extreme weather events and changing rainfall patterns are putting added pressure on productivity and land use, while consumers and policymakers alike are demanding higher standards of animal welfare, traceability, and environmental stewardship. In response, many farmers across Northern Ireland are adapting by investing in precision technologies, improving soil health, diversifying income streams, and adopting more sustainable practices. These efforts are not only helping to future-proof their businesses, but also contributing to a more resilient, climate-smart food system for the region and beyond. Agriculture has long been woven into the fabric of life in Northern Ireland, forming the backbone of rural communities and local economies. It's a heritage built on hard work, deep knowledge, and respect for the land. But as the world changes, so too must farming — evolving to meet shifting consumer expectations, embrace new technologies, and navigate the growing demands of a global market. In line with this vision, Bank of Ireland — now in its 200th year — will again be partnering with the Ulster Farmers' Union as the headline sponsor of its annual awareness initiative, Bank of Ireland Open Farm Weekend. The free-to-attend event will run from June 13 to 15 across 20 working farms throughout Northern Ireland and is expected to attract up to 15,000 visitors. The theme for this year reflects both the legacy of agriculture in Northern Ireland and the path forward for the sector. From dairy and beef to poultry, vegetables and arable, the farms in each county involved represent the diversity and depth of Northern Ireland's agri-food industry. Visitors will have the chance to go behind the farm gate and experience everyday farming life — to learn about the work involved in food production, explore new technologies being adopted on farms, and better understand the future skills, infrastructure and thinking that will be essential to the next generation of farmers. One such example is Littlebridge Farm Fresh, located just outside Coagh, Co Tyrone. This 90-cow Jersey dairy farm is a modern operation where cows are milked using a Lely robotic system. The farm also runs a popular farm shop, selling its own produce alongside locally sourced goods — including fresh Jersey milk from a self-serve vending machine. Littlebridge Farm Fresh is a prime example of how farms are embracing diversification, innovation, and direct engagement with consumers as they plan for the future. And it's only one of the many ways farms are thinking ahead — demonstrating how Northern Ireland's agricultural sector is actively shaping the future of food and farming through innovative practices, forward-thinking approaches, and a commitment to sustainability. Farming in Northern Ireland is not only a cornerstone of our economy — it's a living part of our society. This year's Open Farm Weekend theme challenges us to reflect on that heritage and ask what comes next. Our farmers are already thinking ahead, and this event gives the public a unique opportunity to join that conversation, meet farming families, and better understand the future of farming and food.

Farm Fresh ends FY25 on a high note with record 4Q earnings

FARM Fresh Bhd's net profit rose 15% year-on-year to RM27.65 million for the fourth quarter ended March 31, 2025, buoyed by strong demand for new products — including milk powder, chocolate drink powder, and consumer-packaged ice cream — and lower input costs. Revenue climbed 21% to RM170.8 million. For the full year, net profit surged 68% to RM106.4 million, driven by contributions from Inside Scoop and Sin Wah, both acquired in 2023. Farm Fresh said its revenue increased 21% to RM981.18 million. Its CEO Loi Tuan Ee said Farm Fresh is ramping up capacity at its Taiping plant to meet robust ice cream demand while awaiting completion of its Enstek facility in late 2025. The Muadzam Shah farm is also being expanded to support higher milk output. 'With these developments and initiatives in place, we are confident in sustaining our growth trajectory and we look forward to a stronger year ahead,' Loi added. — TMR

Expansion plans to drive sustainable growth for Farm Fresh

Farm Fresh Bhd group managing director and CEO Loi Tuan Ee KUALA LUMPUR: Armed with a stronger set of earnings and expansion plans, Farm Fresh Bhd group managing director and CEO Loi Tuan Ee expects the group to sustain its growth trajectory in the year ahead. 'We are pleased by what we have been able to achieve as a team in financial year 2025. "The hard work of each and every one has not gone unnoticed as we continued to push the boundaries of possibilities, demonstrating a sustainable upward growth trajectory in our earnings and profitability while ensuring that we continue our category and regional expansion, laying the foundation for sustainable growth as we progress into the year 2026," he said in a statement announcing the dairy firm's results for the recently concluded financial year 2025. In the fourth quarter ended March 31, 2025 (4QFY25), Farm Fresh posted a net profit of RM28.35mil, up from RM23.93mil in the year-ago quarter, translating to an earnings per share of 1.51 sen against 1.28 sen previously. The group reported revenue of RM243.73mil, compared to RM215.03mil in 4QFY24. Over the full financial year, Farm Fresh registered a net profit of RM106.4mil, a leap ahead of RM63.53mil in FY24. Revenue was also improved to RM981.18mil from RM810.41mil in the previous year. According to the group, the improved revenue was underpinned by sales contribution from new product launches coupled with higher commercial sales from UHT and the school milk programme, as well as full year sales contribution from Inside Scoop and Sin Wah. Meanwhile, the higher profitability was also attributed to lower costs due to lower dairy input costs, which significantly improved margins.

Farm Fresh STPM Bursary: 500 B40 Students To Receive RM100 Monthly

NIBONG TEBAL, May 27 (Bernama) -- A total of 500 Form Six students from B40 families will receive RM100 in monthly cash aid starting this month until December 2025 under the Farm Fresh Berhad STPM Student Bursary Programme. Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek said 500 students from 10 states in Peninsular Malaysia had been identified as the initial recipients of the programme. 'It is hoped that this initiative will help elevate the quality of education for these students, apart from inspiring and motivating them to succeed in life and pursue their studies to the highest level,' she told reporters after launching the programme at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Tun Syed Sheh Barakbah here today. Fadhlina also expressed appreciation to Farm Fresh for the initiative, describing it as a form of corporate social responsibility (CSR) that addresses the current needs of Form Six students. She said the Ministry of Education (MOE) hopes to see more corporate companies step forward to support the education ecosystem and elevate national education through similar programmes. She said the MOE remains committed to making Form Six one of the top choices for students pursuing studies after Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) and the rebranding effort is part of a strategic move in line with the Malaysia Education Blueprint 2013-2025 to empower inclusive and competitive post-secondary pathways. To ensure continuity and equitable access to education, she said the government has also extended the Early Schooling Aid (BAP) to Form Six students starting this year, benefitting more than 100,000 students with a total allocation of RM15 million. Farm Fresh has been appointed as the school milk supplier for 10 states across five zones (Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang, Perlis, Kedah, Penang, Perak, Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, and Putrajaya). In addition to the STPM bursary programme which will continue until 2029 with new recipients selected annually, Farm Fresh has also planned several CSR programmes as part of the spillover benefits from the school milk supply contract.
