PVL: Prized setter Mars Alba parts ways with Choco Mucho

Mars Alba is set to open a new chapter in her career as the versatile setter parted ways with the Choco Mucho Flying Titans after almost two years since joining the club. Choco Mucho announced the development on Monday amid its ongoing campaign in the PVL On Tour and Alba's current stint with Alas Pilipinas Women in the VTV Cup in Vietnam. "Your exceptional playmaking and court smarts will remain significant contributions to the team. You'll always be a Titan. Good luck on your next chapter," Choco Mucho said in a Facebook post. Alba, a former setter for De La Salle University in the UAAP, joined Choco Mucho in January 2024 after her previous club F2 Logistics announced its disbandment. She, alongside libero Bia General and spiker Mean Mendrez, bolstered the Flying Titans following the departures of Denden Lazaro-Revilla, Caitlyn Viray, and Bea De Leon. With Alba's exit, Choco Mucho will still have Deanna Wong as well as rookie Tia Andaya as their main playmakers for the 2025 season. —Bea Micaller/JMB, GMA Integrated News

Lyann De Guzman impresses anew as Nxled shocks Choco Mucho

(Photo: PVL) Lyann De Guzman proved her impressive debut outing was no fluke, steering Nxled to yet another upset with a 25-20, 26-28, 27-25, 25-22 win against Choco Mucho in the PVL On Tour on Sunday in Batangas City. The star rookie poured in 24 points anchored on 20 attacks, three aces, and one block laced with nine digs and 12 receptions as the Chameleons went off to a hot 2-0 start. The Flying Titans, meanwhile, dropped to an even 1-1 card. "It was a collective effort from everyone, whoever is inside alam namin na maaasahan and everyone wanted to win," team captain Chiara Permentilla said in the post-game press conference. A rejection on De Guzman by veteran Choco Mucho spiker Honey Royse Tubino put the Flying Titans in the front seat as they took a slim 22-21 lead in the crucial fourth set. But Aduke Ogunsanya went short on her serve that promoted a 4-0 closing run by Nxled, who was coming off a stunning victory against the reigning All-Filipino Conference champion Petro Gazz yesterday. Another rookie in Mayang Nuique denied Isa Molde in the left side before Permentilla sent the Chameleons to the match point by unleashing a strong kill of her own, 24-22. De Guzman then unloaded an ace to cap off yet another stellar outing from her. Permentilla churned out 19 points on 15 attacks, three blocks, and one ace while Jovelyn Fernandez chipped in 14 markers. —JKC, GMA Integrated News

Choco Mucho flaunts depth to overcome Galeries in four sets

A depleted Choco Mucho side dug deep to overcome a lopsided second set glitch against Galeries and eke out a 25-19, 13-25, 25-22, 25-20 win to hit the ground running in its 2025 PVL On Tour campaign on Saturday in Batangas City. Without several key players in Sisi Rondina, Dindin Santiago-Manabat, and Kat Tolentino, veterans Isa Molde and Des Cheng presided over the four-set escape as they went 1-0 in Pool A. Molde top-scored with 20 points together with 12 receptions while Cheng chipped in 13 markers, 11 digs, and five receptions. But it was the contribution from other cast that may have spelled the difference for the Flying Titans. Jen Villegas, the 19th overall pick in the recent rookie draft, proved her worth by shining off the bench and providing the spark in third and four sets, unleashing a single block on fellow rookie Jean Asis to give Choco Mucho a huge 18-11 lead in the fourth. But Galeries reorganized its offense and unleashed a quick 3-0 run to cut the deficit to four before Molde converted back-to-back attacks that extended Choco Mucho's lead to six at 21-15. Another rookie in Ayesha Juegos, who was picked up by the Flying Titans from the free agency market recently, supplied the finishing blow by completing two opposite kills in a row to close out the match. Villegas and Juegos, both formerly with the Adamson University Lady Falcons in the UAAP, finished with seven points each while Honey Royse Tubino churned out eight markers. Asis, meanwhile, had herself a debut after pouring in 16 points in her first game in the PVL while Jewel Encarnacion and Ysa Jimenez chimed in with 14 and 13 markers each. —JKC, GMA Integrated News
